How To Fix a Hole in a Tin Roof

In this video, I show you a quick way to fix a hole in a tin metal roof that might of been caused by a fallen tree limb. I am not a professional roofer, but I have used this method a few times and it works great! Tin roofs, especially on old barns and sheds, see a lot of abuse from the elements and tree limbs. This technique can come in handy one day!

That’s a great idea, thank you for taking the time. The wife and I just bought our first place and it’s got an old barn on it with some tree branch punctures in the roof. A repair like this will buy us plenty of time to get a new roof put on and keep the tractor dry! Thanks again!

Git-R-Done! Whatever keeps the water out! Through The Roof is far better (and more expensive) than the usual tar on galvanized (zinc) steel.

It's a good idea to use a wire wheel (or at least a wire brush) to clean the surface that you're repairing. I went a little overboard and wiped the surfaces with alcohol after using a wire wheel attached to my drill, but it has worked great for several years so far. Any adhesive will stick better to a clean surface.

this is exactly what i was looking for. i have tons of tin scrap laying around. im not to concerned about the metal bonding as said in other comments because with enough tar that will actually be the seal. the metal is more so a extra layer of protection. and yah it might not last 40 years but just a quick yearly check and a recoat if it cracks should do it. that would be my guess anyways. i found a rusted hole behind my chimney in my metal roof and so i filled it with caulk just so there isnt a hole there. but its super hard to get to without a second ladder i relaly had to reach because of the slope so i put a camera on a stick to inspect it and saw a few more cracks next to it so i think ill just put a small sheet across to be extra safe

THANK YOU !! THANK YOU !! THANK YOU !!! SOOOOO MUCH !!!!!! I have been searching for ways to ( remove ) old rusted tin with baseball sized holes in it..safely (as it is a high pitched roof...and now..I won't have to !!! I'll just have the risk of hopes to be able to stand ( or lean) on it (once I get up there (LOL)..and patching the holes without having to remove to repair !!!....your video also makes me wonder..since the roofing cement is on both sides of the ( filler in or metal)...I wonder if this could even be put on from the inside of the building..(it would sure be helpful !!! Save me from climbing on top !!!(lol) Thanks again!!

Conflict of metals likely there. The steel will go into rust mode very fast.

Also much cheaper alternatives would be an Elastomeric Sealant or VULCA SEAL from the Philippines 1/4 liter could only cost you $4 US Dollar.

It's not about making it pretty Mike it's about making a lasting functional repair. You need to clean the surface back to metal. Aluminium on steel is not ideal.

No area prep (sanding/wire brush)? Any adhesion is only as good as the weakest layer, in this case that's the old paint or mold that the patch was applied to.

It was just a storage shed that I needed done fast, as I said in the video that this wasn’t correct. Just meant to get you by. This is just a yard shed, so nothing critical. But it’s been 5 years and still hasn’t leaked a drop

I like this idea but don't like the idea of the black tar. Last month a big branch punched a hole in the top of my metal shed roof. After I removed the branch from the inside of the shed and used a pair of big pliers to bring the metal back into shape somewhat, I am left with an irregular hole about the size of a saucer. My shed roof is white so using the black stuff would look terrible. Have to find something else to use.

Epic fail. The roof cement will wash away in a year. You need a compression caulk between the patch metal and metal panel. Then you need to use pinhead sheetmetal screws to fasten the patch metal down. When caulk beads out of the edges you want to spread it around the edges or apply an Geocel clear caulk on the edges.
