How to FIX Amazon Echo that has STOPPED Responding

Hi, this video shows a very simple fix that can cure many problems on your Amazon Echo. In the video the Amazon Echo has become unresponsive and will not answer any questions, by simply turning it off for 30 seconds and then turning it back on again it has fixed it and can also fix other issues.

Ummm none of your suggestions helped me - but your voice did! When you said “Alexa” my echo dot responded. Our wake up word is “Echo” and I have no idea how it got switched. So thank you!!!

Same exact thing for me. I got this Echo Show 5 for Xmas, Alexa is 95% moody all the time, never wants to respond after I say "Alexa..." - Especially first thing in the morning to turn on lights, AND at night when I want to Turn off lights (I've been manually going into "Smart Home" and pushing the "Turn lights off" button...) - -I play this video for a possible fix, Alexa had no problem responded to all of HIS commands / voice! WTF?!?

Suggestions? Plural! he only gave one trivial and obvious solution, unplug it and plug it back in. DUHHH, like we couldn't figure that out on our own.

Yeah that's BS you have to turn it off every time. I had my Alexa for several years and then all of a sudden the last 6 months or so it started doing it. I thought it had something to do with covid-19 and everybody being at home and everybody being on their Alexa at one time but seriously having to unplug it every day? Pain in the ass...

Thanks for posting this Vince. Coincidentally, I tried your suggestion before seeing your video [since the first stop with most IT malfunctions is to turn off then on] and tried it again after seeing the video, but still to no avail. One thing I did notice was that my Alexa app showed music playing but it wasn't. Still going to have to tinker around to fix this. Off anyone out there had other ideas let me know!

after contacting Amazon and being connected to 6 different call centres in diff parts of teh world, I received no help and gave and threw in the waste bin.... total waste of money AMAZON customer services are PATHETIC

Thanks buddy, this helped me with my Echo show 8. All of a sudden Alexa wouldn't respond to me when I ask her to do things, she does them, just no voice response back. Thought it was bad network connection or something, who I have been unplugging and re-plugging my router. Little did I know, it was Alexa herself that needed to be unplugged for abit. Afterwards, she started talking again. Thanks again.

I got this Echo for Christmas and after about a month or more it started doing the same thing. The only difference is this happens every day. I also hate to keep unplugging it and plugging it back in EVERY day, it's so frustrating I almost tossed it away. I don't use it very often and mostly just to play music from iHeart and TuneIn radio so I don't know if I'm just not using it enough to keep Alexa "interested". It has to be some design flaw or I got a lemon. There has to be a permanent fix for this somewhere. I also set an alarm with Alexa for 8:00 AM every morning so as to wake it up and it seems to work sometimes and sometimes not.

Call Amazon. If you bought it less than a year ago it's still under warranty and they will replace it. I spoke with them today and I'll have my new unit this Sunday.

That worked for me! Those lightning storms the last couple of days must have put it out of wack. I unplugged it as he did, waited 30 seconds, plugged back in and Alexa found her voice! Many thanks!!

What is making me absolutely MENTAL. This Echo Show 5 will not respond to ME saying "Alexa...." It's been erratic for over a week now but last night was pathetic as I kept repeating over and over again "Alexa...Alexa....Alexa..., I wanted to throw this useless POS out my window. AND YET...I play this video to figure out a "fix" and now Alexa wants to respond with no problem at all when you say "Alexa, whats the time - weather, etc"

Seriously this isn't obvious to everyone to power down and back up, when any device has hung for an unusually long time. The most informative thing about this post was "Dewey Plays" comment. Try Echo, Amazon and Alexa if your wake-up word doesn't work. I've also had Alexa pair to my TV's sound bar. I guess because I'd pair it once to the sound bar. Checked the settings, then I turned off Bluetooth. Never happen again.

The unplug-and-re-boot technique works for me, but my problem is that in another four-to-six hours, the Echo will stop responding once again. Sometimes it will cease working in less than two hours. Sometimes it will work for as long as 8 hours. The Echo is hearing me as I see the message and the response show up on the Alexa app of my linked Amazon Kindle Fire. There is obviously something wrong if you have to keep re-booting the Echo 4 or 5 times EVERY DAY. No one has suggested a long term fix for this problem. Grrrrrrrrr....

I'm having the same problem...isn't Amazon responsible for a fix if it's still under the 1 year warranty ? It's really frustrating. This was a Christmas gift from my kids mother and I'm hoping she remembered to keep the receipt. I also set an alarm with Alexa for 8:00 AM every morning so as to wake it up and it seems to work sometimes and sometimes not.

Ryan, is that relevant? That you would ask the question implies relevance, but you were rather cryptic in your laconic question. Perhaps you're thinking Radio Frequency Interference? In answer to your question, yes, I do have multiple devices in my vacation home and in my primary residence. In my vacation home, I have no problem with any of them. Both my primary home and my vacation home have an Echo and two Dots. In my primary residence, the Dots work fine, but the Echo will randomly quit responding until I do an unplug and restart, which will then work for a few hours and then stop working once again. It can hear me because I see my question and its response on my linked Kindle Fire tablet on the Alexa app, but the home Echo appears to be dead, at least as far as giving a verbal response. I bought a third Echo to replace the defective one and have had no problem whatsoever. It is clear that the first Echo is somehow defective. Given that the problem with one of my Echos is so widespread and common with other users, I suspect that Amazon had a batch of defective Echos which will intermittently stop working. Alas, the power-off/reboot is only a temporary fix. Anybody want to buy my defective Echo? It's in the original box and is very lightly used (though not by choice).

My echo dot 2nd generation doesn't respond to any measure mentioned in the video. It is constantly showing blue light (not blinking at all), not a single button responses nor the resetting process works. I tried restarting several times still the same issue. anyone have a solution or might be familiar with such a situation?

Both my A speaker and g nest mini speakers stopped working this week. I'm thinking its a Sky q router issue, but Alexa is refusing to do anything, even listen to voice commands. It just makes a very low chime sound and says it can't understand right now, try again later. I tried, everything, again later, but still no joy, so I have Emailed Amazon customer services and I will also contact Sky to send me a new q hub if I can't get it sorted. Has anybody else experienced this?

ok sorted it now, i replaced the Alexza app with a new version and pressed the dot down on the device for 15 seconds till the light turned orange and did the set up again yeah working fine and back with the bad Jokes--why are football stadiums so cool? because every seat as a FAN in them ????back to sleep Alexza

Mine was acting crazy two weeks before it stopped working and I tried to fix it. It interrupted my conversation over the phone many times and I was getting annoyed. I unplugged it and put in box and put it away. I might sell it or trash it.

Nothing of that fixes worked for me, but I found a fix for me, maybe there are people I can help with this also: deinstall the alexa app on your smartphone, it worked immidatly :)

My guess is a Linux Kernel Panic (== Windows BSoD) because the Echo's run Fire OS, a form of Android, and Android is a form of Linux. Still, the thing is so heavily integrated that it really should not crash, and if it does, Linux added an option to reboot if it crashes in the compiler config, and I am almost certain that it is compiled with that.

Did you really need to watch a video to figure out that unplugging and re-plugging devices sometimes resets them and fixes their problems? That is usually the very first thing most people try. I call it the Microsoft solution because their solution to every computer problem is to restart your computer. LOL

What also works for me is to call or message my echo from the alexa app - the ring turns green and after I've told Alexa to answer/hang up or to read message she starts responding again.

Edit: here's how to fix this if it still isn't working for you. Check your outlet. Mine was plugged in but slightly out of the socket so my Alexa still was receiving power and turning blue so it would recognize my voice but not responding. Make sure it's fully inserted. Easy fix.

@@lauraadams478 Did you check the actual outlet too? Not just where the cord plugs into the back of your echo dot? If its out of the wall plug even slightly it'll have the problem I just described. Check both just in case. It's very figgety. The cord can come loose from being moved around but appear like it's still plugged in.

I have an Echo Plus. It will "look" like it is responding but there will be no sound. If I unplug it and wait 30 secs then plug it back in, everything is fine. This happens at least once a day. Anyone know how to fix this?

The same thing happens to me and the signal strength is fine and to answer the other reply...yes I have a cable connection. It is very frustrating to have this happen so often. There has to be or rather there should be a permanent fix for this somewhere...maybe they could send an update or something that fixes this.

I think it's pretty clear amazon has a back door way to make the device more and more unresponsive over time. Either that or their hardware completely sucks.

Fair enough. But...last night, normally working AE+ playing all day. I call it a night I tell Alexa to stop - it ignores me, but I could hear it struggling to comply before resuming play. After several requests I just unplugeed the son of a gun. This morning.....DEAD. lol We must'nt forget that beyond the seeming magic, we're still and only dealing with electrical hardware. I probably broke it, but before that....it was acting werid anyways.

I reset her but when the app ask me to tell her something to learn my voice it doesn't listen and doesn't configure that now. What can I do?
