How to fix an oil leak between the transmission and transfer case, Dodge Ram part 1

This video is the first of two volumes showing a detailed step by step description of how I replaced the seals between my 46RE 4-speed automatic transmission and the 231 HD transfer case. Those are stock parts on a 1998 1500 Dodge Ram 5.9L 4X4. This repair was necessary because of a chronic low volume leak of ATF from the weep hole between the two parts. This type of leak may seem to be coming from the transfer case, since gravity and surface tension draws multiple oil droplets down and back from the source of the leak. Details of how to remove and replace the transfer case are shown.
Part II is here • How to fix a transfer ...
Special thanks to Sheriff420 for still images of this job and practical step by step advice, on the DodgeForumdotcom, here:

Yet another EXCELLENT video! I have a 4WD Ram2500 and could not reach my (46RE) transmissions front band adjustment without removing this FWD propeller shaft first. P.S. Thanks for calling out the size of all the fasteners along the way!

My boss finally fixed this on his Blazer, habitually drained transfer case and added it back to the transmission. If you don't know about this issue, fairly confusing to have so much fluid come out at you when you are checking the transfer case fluid

Yeah, that would be a shock. Good thing they used the same fluid....

My 1998 dakota is leaking there too. I overfilled the transmission by about 2 quarts. Now it is leaking a medium sized puddle every hour. I believe it was weeping slightly before I added the atf. Will my transmission stop leaking once the atf is at the maximum level?
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 7 месяцев назад
It seems I missed this comment last month. These components have vent tubes and when fluid is overfilled you can get fluid leaking out the vent. Usually the vent is up high, a rubber tube sometimes with a little knob in the end designed to allow air to pass but not allow dirt in. Once in a while a vent gets plugged, which allows pressure inside to increase, and that can cause seals to fail. Adjusting ATF fluid level can take some time since you need the vehicle warm to do the measurement. Older vehicles like this have a procedure for measuring fluid level with engine running, warm, and with transmission in neutral, so you need to chock the wheels with emergency brake on so the vehicle can't move when you hop out to check the level. I'd review the dealers service manual for your car to be sure you do it correctly. There shouldn't be any fluid escaping out that weep hole but I agree with your plan to get level right before moving forward with more aggressive repair.

Good stuff. I sure would like a to hear a definitive explanation from why the drive shaft u joints are indexed. As I referred to before I installed thousands on the assembly line at GM and there was to indexing. I find it odd as well. I still run into people that tell me I should not store my batteries on concrete. LOL. I have to ask what the green marking you had on one of your wrenches was for. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks.

In this video you'll see there are two seals, one on each side, and also there is a third area that requires RTV. This is the Dodge, I would look for a dealers repair manual specific to your vehicle. Alldatadiy is fairly inexpensive, and you may find diagrams and even instructions that may help with the repair.

I HAVE A 2005 FORD ESCAPE, WHEN I POUR TRANSMISSION FLUID IN MY TRUCK, WHY IS IT STILL LEAKING OIL? ALSO IT SHIFTS WEN I DRIVE IT ND A FEW TIMES IT HAS CUT OFF ON ME... DOES THIS MEAN IT NEED A VAVLE COVER GASKET OR WHAT?....
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 6 лет назад
Normal transmission oil has a pink or light brown color, motor oil is black. Transfer case oil can be various colors, some use transmission oil, others have dedicated transfer case oil. Differential gear oil is heavy black, and power steering oil is black. You should be able to tell by the color and location of the leak which oil is leaking. Motor oil has to deal with the extremes of heat, and small amounts are normally consumed when motor oil leaks past piston rings. Transmission oil and other oils don't have to withstand the extremes of heat that motor oil has to endure. If somebody told you valve cover gaskets will do that, they are pulling your leg. DIY auto repair requires a huge commitment of time, effort, tools and confidence that most people don't have. Ask around with friends, look for local reviews of shops and get an opinion from a pro. Good luck!

I have some kind of fluid leaking between the oil pan and the transmission. I hope it's just the pan gasket. That would be a much easier fix than transmission gaskets. I'm fairly sure it's oil , but I still need to find the leak.
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 8 лет назад
+Jaaq Ess A first step is to understand how to tell the difference between the various oils. Often the oil used for the tranfer case and engine is different than the transmission, with a very different color. Another factor that may be important is that overfilling the transmission can cause foaming of the oil, which can then leak out of the vent tube at the top of the trans. That causes confusing leaking, too, so make sure you're not overfilled. If the above aren't giving answers, you could do a trans oil and filter change and change the pan gasket at the same time. Once before I had a vehicle that was put through a professional trans oil change, and they forgot to tighten the pan bolts. A quick turn of the pan bolts solved the problem. However don't forget that those pan bolts are threaded into aluminum, so don't overtorque them.
@jaaqess2525

spelunkerd It turns out it's coolant. I have a spot where I park that has oil on it from past leaks and it looked like oil, but after it dripped more I could see the green. I'm just going to keep an eye on it and wait till I have to fix it, because I really don't want to pull the transmission for a small drip.
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 8 лет назад
+Jaaq Ess Coolant is probably better news, though you should have a look for the weep hole under the water pump bearing to see if it's coming from there. If so, you'll need a new water pump soon. Hopefully it will be something easier like a hose connection.

@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 10 лет назад
Good question, my short answer is I don't know. Tonight I looked it up on alldata for you, but there doesn't seem to be much detail there. I found one diagram showing the locations for various test ports including a governor test port, accumulator test port, front and rear servo test ports and overdrive clutch test port. I could send that to your email address if you like, but there were no other details regarding normal values. If I were investigating that I would probably start with getting as much info as possible from my code reader, autoenginuity. There is a pressure regulating solenoid so the feedback from that is probably sent back to the pcm, and is probably available if you can get it using the right software. You might find more detailed overviews of this transmission on the net.

@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 8 лет назад
Those are hard to do, lots of extra work now. I would keep it full and put up with driveway stains if the leak isn't too bad. Playing the blame game doesn't accomplish much. He could reasonably argue the extra labour cost to pull the torque converter/flex plate and replace an expensive normal seal wasn't justified if the seal wasn't leaking at the time. I believe some mechanics do replace the seal by removing the flex plate during a trans change, but you can bet they add that extra step to every customer's bill in some way. They consider that insurance against the person who will complain later, but the problem is that the insurance 'bill' is paid by their own customers. I find some shops often charge for replacement of extra normal parts, arguing that if the part goes bad soon after the repair, they get blamed. However when I do a repair I try to focus only on the parts proven to be bad, noting that my time is not so expensive and I'm willing to spend more time later if suspect parts die soon after. When a pro shop charges the customer to replace a lot of normal parts to preserve their reputation in case issues happen later, I shrug.... On the other hand, if there was clear evidence the main seal was leaking before the repair, it would be hard to justify not dealing with it at the time.

spelunkerd I know you do... I also hold on to my cars for 10 to 15 years. I have issues with gas guzzlers. This week on my 2007 Focus I did all springs, struts and shocks, pads and brake fluid, oil / filter transmission / filter and oil. I'm also going to add a Arctic cold external transmission filter. I had done this on another car that had not had a transmission oil change in 100,000 miles and the transmission fluid was black. After a couple of changes and the addition of the external filter the fluid stayed perfect. Not selling anything here but I use Amsoil when I make changes. I really wanted to make a video of all I did here the last week but time was not on my side. Thanks for all your effort! It's truly amazing! I'm going to be looking into one of those torque multipliers soon! Cool tool!

@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 8 лет назад
+Andre Jackson The rear main motor seal is quite a bit more involved to fix. Because of the extra effort to drop the trans, if the leak isn't very bad it might be wise to watch it for a while, replacing fluids as they are lost. You want to be sure which fluid is on the ground. Most transmission fluids have a different color (often red) compared to engine oil (usually black unless changed recently). Also verify it's not coolant, which would be approached very differently. Check to be sure you're not losing fluid from the adjacent oil filter seal or various sensors in the area. Make sure you haven't overfilled fluids, in which case you can get loss from a vent tube because of frothing oil inside the engine or transmission.

Oh, you're talking about the front, not shown in this video. Those front snap rings can be tricky. Usually it's a process of tap, rotate, tap, rotate, and have patience. I did a video of the suburban axle seal on my channel. Suddenly if almost fell out with a little tap. The snap ring just needs to be in a perfect spot, and you're working blind so it's trial and error. As you say, if you can't get it out, you need to split the diff.

@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 6 лет назад
Rear main seals are the problem there, not very easy to deal with. Make sure it is engine oil and not transmission oil (very different color). To deal with that the usual strategy is to drop the transmission and replace the seal, which ends up being quite a bit of work. Search 'rear main seal, Dodge". In some engines you may need to drop the pan as well, and a rear pan leak could present in the same way. Guys who have manual transmissions sometimes do that seal as part of a clutch replacement, though it takes about 30 minutes longer so professional shops sometimes cut the corner and fail to refresh the seal. If it is not leaking very badly, you could just watch it, keeping an eye on oil level since loss of engine oil is the main complication. Whenever you have a major seal like that blow, make sure your PCV valve is working and not plugged, since high crankcase pressure from blowby gasses can cause seals to fail. Good luck!
