How to Fix/Avoid the Dreaded Nespresso Vertuo Plus Leak

I managed to cause the dreaded leak - the nasty 'orrible thick tarry-black sticky stuff that can leak from the bottom of the machine and cause the coffee to leak out of the back because the insides are just gummed up.
The reason - lack of cleaning - I deliberately left it uncleaned for over 6 weeks.
In this video I will show you how to resolve the leak and stop it from happening in the future simply by performing a cleaning routine over and above the automatic cleaning cycle that Nespresso recommend you run.

I have had 3 of these machines now, the first one was fine, has never had a problem and is still fine. I bought a second one for work which leaked out of the bottom from day one, so I sent it back under guarantee and got another. This machine was fine for a few months and then started leaking in the same way that the returned one did. Cleaning is important but the issue seems to be that the machine has some sort of problem between the pod and the outlet spout and coffee cannot flow properly so it backs up and runs down the back of the machine and onto the worktop, I keep a tray under the machine to contain the spill. This video, as good as it is, will not solve the problem as there is some form of blockage that no amount of cleaning will shift.

You are correct to point this out and thanks for posting. I think in comments somewhere I have said that the issue resurfaced on mine some months later and eventually I gave up and got a new one which so far (2 years I think);is trouble free. I think quality control is not great on some versions but generally, support in the UK is decent. I keep meaning to tear down the old one to try and find the root cause but I'm so lazy.

Exact same machine as this - it's been leaking underneath for a few weeks now - had a good clean about 3 months ago maybe due to capsule blockage [always something :-D ] .. I've followed you step by step and the water, as I type is now pouring clear ... hopefully this will stop having to put kitchen roll under the machine / the daily clean up ... I've set a reminder to follow this video every third Sunday ... Thank you!!!

What I did: Find some pipe cleaners (natural) and push it up through the down spout (where coffee comes out of) - spin and clean - do this several times - as well as descale with white vinegar afterward. I found that sometimes what is happening is there is build-up - which creates back pressure and forces water/coffee to go through the run-off valves or out the top. This has worked for me multiple times.

What you showed here was just an overflow, not a leak. You did not show where it was leaking as the coffee was brewing. With my machine, I can actually see some coffee dripping down from the top of the back panel as it was brewing if I remove the used pod receptacle, about 5ml for each cup. The leak is brownish, i.e. after hot water has passed through the pod. It leaks only after 30 secs or so, maybe the tube from the pod to the spout is partially blocked, and it takes 30 sec for it to back up to the top & comes out from there.

Nicely done. You’ve pointed out some spots I’ve overlooked. I use a detail brush (looks kind of like a toothbrush) that came with my juicer. I’m addition to the usual bristles facing down it has a row of bristles facing straight out. I’m happy with this. I also grabbed a cheap baby bottle scrub brush that works nicely too.

I regret making this vid as ever since I let it get so dirty it's not been working right on and off. I got a new one in a Nespresso sale and I'm planning a full teardowm of the old one to identify where the problems may lie and what is stopping it working so well as it had been.

Here is a helpful message from Nespresso: Thank you for contacting Nespresso. We’re disappointed to learn that your VertuoPlus machine is leaking during the brew cycle, and we apologize for any inconvenience. This may indicate that the brew unit and coffee outlet needs cleaning. There are upper and lower parts to this unit. To avoid maintenance issues with your machine, the brew unit must be cleaned regularly. Please allow us to provide you with these cleaning tips: Plug in your machine, and press the button to turn your machine on, and wait for the steady green light. Tap the lever upward to release any used capsule from the capsule chamber. With the head opened, wipe and clean off coffee grounds and residue you see in the upper unit. Wipe and clean off coffee grounds and residue you see in the bottom unit. After these areas have been cleaned, tap the lever downwards to close the head of your machine. With a toothpick, clean the coffee outlet, and the circular opening next to the coffee outlet. Next, to run the Clean Cycle, you may locate the Clean Cycle instructions in your user manual or you may view a video tutorial by clicking here. Test the machine using a capsule. For your convenience, we have provided the Clean Cycle steps below: Fill the water tank with water and attach properly to the machine. Make sure the machine is turned on and without a capsule, lock the top of the machine. Place a cup under the coffee spout. Start the Clean Cycle by pressing the button three times quickly. The machine will start to make noise. Please allow at least 2 minutes for water flow. The light on top will blink quickly as the machine is cleaning. Once the light becomes steady, that indicates the Clean Cycle has completed and you may test a capsule if you wish. If your machine begins to leak again, you may stop clean mode by pushing the button. The button will go back to a steady green light. If our suggestions do not resolve the issue, we will best be able to assist you further with your machine over the phone. We kindly ask for you to call our toll-free number, 877-964-6299, for the next steps through our Assistance Service Program, based on your warranty. For best maintenance for your VertuoPlus machine, we recommend to always eject the used capsules after every use, run the Clean Cycle once a week, and descale your machine every three months, or when your machine light indicator is red/yellow or red/green. All removable spare parts, including the water tank, should be washed by hand at least once a week. We trust you will find this information useful, Bruce. Thank you for being the best part of Nespresso. Best regards, Deveisha Nespresso North America Contact Us For immediate attention, please contact Nespresso via our toll-free number 800.562.1465. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our Coffee Specialists will be happy to assist you. Alternatively, you may always reach out to us via email for a response within 24 hours.

I'll be doing a follow up on this issue as I had a major problem with the coffee being watery and then leaking a lot. Cleaning a rinsing didn't work but... Turns out a series of descaling routines cleared out what must have been an internal blockage. I would imagine that if you have a machine in a hard water area descaling should be done bi monthly or more. Judging by how much limescale is in my kettle which is less than a year old, limescale buildup could cause a lot of issues. I'll be monitori g the sutuation but for now it's back to working like normal.

I’m now onto my third vertuo machine as I had it under guarantee and they all developed the same problem, watery coffee. Nespresso sent me a new machine every time but the guarantee is up now and the same fault has re-occurred with the latest machine so ill have to buy a new one or try to fix it. Ive searched you tube every time to see if anyone has a similar problem, but this is the first time I’ve seen a comment from someone who has a similar problem. I’ll try the descaling but Ive tried this with previous machines and it made no difference after one descale. Maybe multiple tries may fix it. I love the coffee from Vertuo but the machines seem very prone to faults. Anyway thanks for taking the time to post videos like these, they are most useful

If you use your Nespresso a lot like me …at least a couple times a day.. I will do the rinsing at least once a week with distilled water and descale at least one extra a month with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar/distilled water… if your using hard or soft water..it’s best to descale routinely… Also, remember to always dump the pod after each use…I found out that if you leave the pod overnight, it’ll have a tendency to stick in the cup. I’ll also take a napkin and wipe up the cup after each use…the grim will tend to build up.

I have this machine in my guest room and it's just barely out of the two year warranty. It's clean, that's not the problem. Nespresso basically said pay for the repair or throw it out. So it's going into the garbage bin. Of course I'll never buy this defective model again.

Sorry to hear. Mine eventually died after 3 years, but I got a free one with a coffee order. It's still going. I have heard Nespresso customer service isn't good. There business is coffee not machines and they literally do not care especially older machines. Nothing these days is user servicable. I still think it's a good product but I feel bad some people bought machines based on my video which then went south.

I would suggest a vigorous scrub with an old toothbrush and run several cleaning cycles. There is another vid I saw of a lady who was bending the metal rails where the pods slide into the pod bin who reckons that helped her but I can't verify that. I know mine leaks if it's really mucky and I have neglected cleaning it thoroughly (e.g. cleaning cycle once no scrubbing). Let me know how you get on?

Mine leaked when it was dirty. I can only report on what I found with my own experience. I'm sorry if it didn't fix yours. If you have some deeper insights, you could share them with the community. Some months after this was made mine developed a problem that cleaning could not solve. Not a leak, but watery coffee, initially intermittently but then all the time. I'll be tearing down that machine ( although technically I could get a warranty repair) to try and identify the cause but I suspect 2 things, 1 a perished seal(s) and 2, limescale buildup. My new machine (same model just red) is noticably quieter and I think the old one was on the way out for a few weeks. But I only had problems after I had let it get very dirty for this video. Unrelated maybe. Could be these things have lifespan and at nearly 3, mine had reached it. Replacing it cost me under £50 so I'm not that sore, but after recommending the machine I feel I should be honest about what happened to mine and what the problem turns out to be (assuming I can figure it out).
