How to fix Chevy Equinox hard start issue, how to clean a throttle body 

We have a 2006 equinox with 50,000 miles on it with the same problem after taking it to the dealer and spending close to 500 bucks and no fix the dealer said there is nothing wrong with your car it’s normal For it to do that ?... I ran across your video and checked the throttle body and sure as heck was black as tar. I cleaned it just like you recommended put her back together and she now purrs like a cat. My gf totaled her car about a month ago and I went a looked at a 2006 equinox with 100k on it for 3k for her. No check engine lights, no funny engine noises, drove fine when I rode in it, tell her too but it, and her first day owning it it starts doing that hard start/idle. Her being a waitress she used her savings to buy this vehicle. Thank you so much for this video you helped us out more than you'll ever know!!

Great video, learned a lot. I'm working on a 2006 Pontiac Torrent with the exact same engine. It has a terrible erratic idle and stalls a lot, especially when warm. When I'm at a stop sign I need to keep revving the engine a little to prevent a stall. I'm going to clean the throttle body today and hope for the best. Thank you again. Will let you know how it turned out.

After watching, I pulled my throttle body off and it is really clogged up! I am cleaning it now. Thanks!!!

Had a 2002 Impala that I had to spay starting fluid into an opening before the throttle body. Traded it in 2015 Impala. I have a 2004 Bonniville that is had to start. Will be doing this cleaning and spaying the mass flow air also.

Fixed my daughters 2005 chevy equinox yesterday watching your video... I have been a Mechanic for 25 years and learned someone new from this guy... impressed to say the least.. thank you sir

Even small accumulations on my 2011 Equinox 2.4 will result in occasional stalling. I clean it in place after removing the intake boot using a clean cloth wetted with carb cleaner to wipe the throat and throttle plate at each oil change. The throttle plate can be opened by hand to access both sides. Takes 5 minutes and is worth the effort.

My 06 is doing the same. Going to try this out this weekend. Thanks for the great video!

Greate video. After flushing the radiator with detergent I guess the gasket on the water pump went bad. Got tons of antifreeze in engine afterwards and I guess it cooked the throttle car is in limb mode in combination with weird transmission problems. I'm going to try this and see if I can get out of limp mode.

Havent tried it yet but what i seen from your vid, this was my issue...and oddly pushing gas helped the car catch and start when turning key. i got a new air filter sittin right next to me i need to throw in anyway. gonna clean this thing out tommorow and see what happens. All this time i thought maybe was fuel pressure regulator or throttle position sensor...problems i had on my 2005 impala which oddly had throttle cable but my 05 equinox does not. good stuffs. guess i gotta go get one of those weird inverted torx for stud first

That was a great Video, I just got my 2006 a little over a year ago, Have had nothing but problems with it, Now in has injector problems. I didn't even know about the throttle body. That helped allot! Thanks.

I have the 2.4 L 4 cylinder and clean the throttle body every oil change. I don't take it off though, just clean it in place, it will take couple of starts to push the cleaner through the engine but it will burn off. This should be a regular service at least once a year.

I have al equinox 2005 do you know what is the zize to remove the torx screw?

what does it mean when you start it up and the rpm dont move and it has a hard or rough idle?

do you necessarily have to take those studs out to get it off?

I have a 2006 3.4 ..one owner it had 25k miles when I bought it.. back in 08.. from the start it has ALWAYS had a hinky start. not all the time.. but I would say half the time.. I thought it was the starter.. it has never been replaced.. I will go to start it and it acts weird.. sorry for not having a better way to explainit.. its just not that clean roll over.. so when this happens, I stop.. wait for 5- 10 seconds.. take a deep breath.. tell her I love her and then try again and vrooom usually starts right up lol.. always freaks me out though.. but it always starts the second time.. this car has been a very good, reliable car.. but I am extremely good about maintenance.. keeping that oil chked and changed is a MUST.. same with the water and other fluids.. the only issues I have had so far has been the damn fans.. they have been replaced twice.. and its always the larger of the two.. also an AC switch and the fuel pump once.. For anyone that doesn't know this.. keep at least a half a tank always. if you can.. it keeps that fuel pump cooled.. helps to prolong life.. Recently I have had an accident. the whole front of my car was pulled off .bumper.. grill.. so far the radiator has a small crack.. and the fan is dead.. again.. also I have a motor mount that needs to be replaced.. She has 130k miles on her so far.. I have her with my trusty mechanic as we speak.. I think 130k miles and basically having only a few small issues is pretty good.. but I have always had hot rods b4 this and as much as I loved them I do not miss the constant repairs and break downs.. thank you for posting this.. I am going to ask my mechanic if this is my starting issue once we put her back together.. it would be nice to not have to hold my breath every time I go to start it lolol.

Well, I definitely know what im doing on my day off, now. Been having this issue for the past three years on my 06 equinox. Everything i had read up until now kept saying it was a manufacturing fault with the ECM, with a dealer only cost of about $700.

At last, someone using a 1/4" drive socket on small stuff!

Hey Tom, Im looking to repair my 2006 equinox and had a question that I am sure you could help me answer. Is the equinox running an electric throttle body? Im wondering because I cant seem to see a idle control valve mounted to the throttle body assembly. Or do I just not know what I am looking for? The reason I ask is because my car seems to buck when i let off the gas on the highway, sometimes has a rough idle, and has a hard start. My first thought was the idle control valve but now I am not even sure if the equinox has one. Thus why I ask if its running an electric throttle body. I did buy some CRC throttle body kleen and am going to give cleaning it a try to see if it makes a difference.

So i just did this and thought id report back... IT FUGGIN WORKED ... i tried using seafoam spray first, a little improvement but not really.... this worked and now i wanna get a new autostart remote now that my car will actually start

Cleaned it and still does now it only does it on the the first start up then goes away until it sits for a couple mins

I have a 2006 Pontiac Torrent 3400 v6 i had to have my engine Head-gasket replaced at 207,047 kms back in June 12, 2019 i told the Mechanic sent's the engine is all you might as well replace it with all New parts there is all new lifters and push rods and roller rockers and a new timing chain, when i got it back sounded like a whole brand new engine today i have 225,595 kms but noticed a light ticking sound coming from the engine behind the engine it sounded like it is around where the Alternator is could it be a Pulley causing that i had the same sound before but i didn't worry about as i had an Oil change done and no noise, and now i can hear it again, i was thinking bout doing another oil change but this time using full Synthetic, last oil change was Synthetic Blend.

Do you have to unhook the battery or reset anything?

maybe you can help me I have a 2008 equinox and I have been fighting the EGR code problem. I put a new EGR valve on and the code was gone for awhile but now it's back. I took it off and it looks like there is carbon build up on it but I believe the carbon is in the pipe coming out of the EGR. anything would help thanks in advance

Never buy GM motors again!! I had same issue! Changed spark plugs, oil, coils, camshaft sensors, clean throttle, cleaned air intake sensor & it happened to be a bad timing chain/belt!! But still idle goes up & down a bit!! Junk Cars!! NEVER BUY GM AGAIN!!
