I show how to repair a stripped derailleur hanger using a "Dropout Saver" from Wheels Manufacturing. I also discuss several other possible methods for fixing a stripped derailleur hanger.
I know people are going to ask where to get the dropout savers. I got them on Amazon. Here are links to them:

I usually just thread my deraileur from the back of the thread which creates new threads and then I thread it back the normal way. It has saved me a lot of times and I think that is the best way unless you have a very very stripped hanger.

Hey RJ! Thank you for your videos. You are a legend :D I am having this exact problem right now. I brought my bike to my local bike shop and they said the derailleur hanger was irreplaceable. Sad but I immediately bought a derailleur saver :D I wanted to know your opinion on filing the hole and also freezing the derailleur saver to shrink it. I’m a bit scared to drill my bike because I might just destroy it. Thank you! Update: I filed the hole. Took some time and effort but I managed to do it. Just needed to be careful because the more I filed, the metal sides that still existed became thinner and could’ve broke. On the other hand, freezing the derailleur saver didn’t work lol.

Dear RJ, Thank you for sharing with public your skill in bicycle mechanic and your innovative ideas for tool making. I would like to see your innovative idea of making a tool or showing a way to increase the elasticity of the coil spring for the brake caliper mounting cantilever. By the past of time and use, those coil springs do lose their elasticity. Sometimes they totally lose it. Unfortunately I have not find any place selling those springs individually. One has to buy a complete caliper set that are rather expensive. I did play with a coil spring that had lost its elasticity by pulling its ends in opposite directions and increasing the space between the concentric circles of the coil. It was effective and worked well. However, I would like to learn your idea about this subject and hope that you can possibly demonstrate making a homemade tool for this purpose. Thank you

Not sure if these exist already but another idea that may work after you drilled the hole wider would be a type of nut that could be placed inside the hole and would push outwards to 'grip' like a rawplug you put in a wall.This would avoid the projection that would interfere with the chain,cog you mentioned.The outside could even be coated with rubber to avoid damage to wall.

In the event that the hex head protrudes into the small cog, you mention the possibility of adding a spacer on the axle (quick release?) which should provide clearance. 1- For balance, should spacers of equal thickness be placed on each end of the axle? 2- Will the addition of the spacer adversely effect the derailleur functioning by effectively moving the cassette further away from the rear derailleur? 3- I see another alternative talked about... that of using helicoil to form new M10 x 1 mm threads. Any thoughts? 4- Novice that I am, I tightened up the derailleur attachment bolt after encountering resistance over the last third. My thought is that the threads of the attachment bolt may be disfigured too after having gone through that exercise several times. I bought a new M10 x 1 mm bolt and nut from the hardware store, and that bolt moved through the threaded receiver without that resistance that was felt with the rear derailleur bolt. Is there any fix for the eventuality that the threads on the rear derailleur attachment bolt are compromised? Could the rear derailleur be disassembled to get that bolt independent for thread chasing? As installed, there doesn't appear to be any way to get at the threads with a separate nut, with the B screw assembly set up, etc. in the way. .... Really have valued your presentations. First class.

This would have saved my favorite Raleigh mtb a few years ago. I was doing some deep woods trail riding, and I had a branch get caught in my spokes. It ripped off my derailleur, and striped the threads on the drop out. Furious and frustrated, I went to my local bike shop and they basically told me my bike was K.I.A., and there was nothing they could do as it was an aluminum frame. I was so upset I ended up trashing the bike. If I knew of this product back then I would still have that bike today.
@rogersim40
@rogersim40 2 года назад
Dude you gave up too early. Sorry for your loss. Could've had a new hanger welded/brazed on. Aluminium's much easier to join than steel. If replacing the hanger wasn't an option, you could also have turned it into a single speed bike. That said, somebody probably got a nice gift the day you thrashed that bike.

Hi RJ, any tips on how to fix the metal tab where the limiting screw rests? Mine seems to have been rubbed down and the screw is barely resting on it. I'm afraid it'll slip causing my rear derailleur to fail. Thanks. Always learning something new from your videos.
@vidjagameenjoyer
@vidjagameenjoyer 7 лет назад
You could flip the direction of the screw, ie, thread it from the other side. Then you will have a larger surface resting on the metal tab. Or maybe the piece holding the screw is bent and not aligning it straight with the frame. Could be a few things, would need to see pictures.

Sells steel derailleur hangers? If you have an integrated hanger like in this video, you would need to buy the whole dropout part and have a frame build braze it in to the frame. They sell non integrated hangers for bikes that don't have hanger to begin with. Usually old or low end bikes. www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001PT8M8C/ref=nosim/youtube25-20

Hey RJ. I love your videos and I do have a newer mountain bike derailer hanger. I have had the rear wheel freshly rebuilt and new cassette and a new chain but something is still wrong with my bike. I have a Titus Rockstar 29er and it seems like every time I pedal and too much tension is on the chain it will pop. It does it a lot and it is always when I am pushing down on my pedal (like when I am trying to accelerate). I have taken it to a shop and they tried adjusting the rear derailer hanger with their tool but to no avail. I just posted a video on my page and I was wondering if you could help me figure this out. I have dropped a ton money into this bike and had zero rides this past summer. It starts doing it at around 3 seconds till about 6 seconds and then again around 16 seconds. I am posting the link to the video. Thank you for your help and for all the videos you have done. We appreciate them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-36xtRhWP7PE.html

Looks like a Trek Mountain Track 800? I just picked up one of those in rough shape for $15. Derailleur hanger was bent and stripped. I’m thinking this is my best option as the hole is somewhat oval shaped. RJ, I need also need to replace the middle chainring on this bike. Are there any options other than replacing the entire crank?

I think it was a specialized crossroads. If the chain rings are bolted, replace the ring. If the riveted, replace the crank.

Hi RJ, Do you know if there are any clip-on rear derailleur cable stoppers in the market? I'm building a bike which doesn't have a cable stopper on the chain stay (to impede the cable housing from moving forward while shifting) and while I have seen many cable guides, I have yet to come to a proper cable stopper. Is welding something on the only answer? (hoped for something easier).

Sorry about that and thanks for the swift reply. The chain stay is a bit wider than the ones on old vintage bikes though (~18mm), so not sure that will fit. I'll keep on looking for similar ones with a slightly larger diameter. Thanks again man, appreciated.
