DISCLAIMER!
I am not responsible for any damages that may accure to the door, motor or any other part of the system as a result from this trick/"fix"
Alright in Cobalt's and other GM vehicles the blender door actuator has always been an issue where after some time it starts making a clicking sound when the vehicle turns on and when you use the re-circulation feature. This is due to the the final few teeth of the gear being stripped or messed up.
In this video i will be showing you how to stop this without taking it to the dealership and paying a bunch of money to have the dash tore apart and having the actuator for the blender door replaced.
Tools/Requirements needed:
Scissors or Snips
Two or Three Long Zip Ties
10-15 Minutes Of Time

Mine does that creepy sound too. Heading outside and try this out. Wait for an update. **Updated**: I tried it out with two zip tie in the middle instead of in two places and worked just perfectly. Make sure you don't leave a slack of the zip tie, but leave 1/8 of an inch in order the flap door stay in open position but for a little room which is 1/8''. Great thanks to this man for showing us how to eliminate that sound. Thank you gain.

That Fix definitely works, but I didn’t want to fuss with the tight space so I just put a screw in the lower part of the door flap, so when it opens up it hits and stops the door before it gets to the point where it starts making the noise. Works perfectly and I just used a long extension with a drill. Thanks for the video

maybe do a short video on how you actually fed the zip ties in and to make them do the 180 turn and come back out again

Great info! It didn't even cost a few dollars. All you really have to do is get ANYTHING shoved in there. I tested it by putting the end of a screwdriver in between the door and it stopped clicking. Since it looked to be a bit tricky to get a cable tie through there, I bent over a piece of coat hanger and hooked it over the top of where the door closes. I rolled the other end to create a "clip" that I ran into a hole in some metal above. Works great. I was about to go down the route of tearing out insulation and trying to replace the actuator. Even after I ripped up my car I was not confident that this would work. This saved my ass.

25 Oct 2023: This worked great on my 2006 Chevy HHR. Dealer and local shop were quoting between $700-$900. It cost me two zip-ties and 20 minutes of time. Thank you for the video.

ALSO WORKS IN A CHEVY HRR. Holy crap, I've been tolerating the click for years because I had that changing out that blend door actuator was a +$900 job. I did this in 5 minutes with some zip ties I already had. Changed the cabin filter while I was there (it was absolutely filthy). I feel like I got a new car! I wish I could like this video 1000 more times.

Holy crap this really works! I only had to use 1 zip tie though. Just a few well earned busted knuckles and BAM! No more noise lol. Thanks man, you rule. How dare they build the dash to where it's insane to access important components! Chevy engineers their cars to where you are almost left with no choice but pay their mechanics hundreds of dollars for NOTHING!
@AdamConstantine

If it’s nothing, pulling the dash should be easy.

@@AdamConstantine you are not a mechanic are you. If you've ever put a heater core in an Equinox you'll know that pulling a dash isn't that much fun. I think the "Nothing" he refers to means its an easy do it yourself fix.
@AdamConstantine
@AdamConstantine 5 лет назад
AL M what I’m saying is he’s complaining about paying a mechanic for “nothing” but that’s just it, pulling a dash isn’t easy. You are paying us to do things you can or don’t want to. It’s gets annoying hearing people complain all the time about having to pay to fix their car. I am a tech and I’ve pulled dashes. That wasn’t what I was saying

It's not just Chevy engineers, and it's been like this the 40 years I've been wrenching. DASH WORK SUCKS. I despise pulling dashes for electrical and HVAC issues. Some jobs call for 10 - 20 hours, and at $150 shop rate, customers decline all the time.
@TheCrimson187
@TheCrimson187 3 месяца назад
Wow this was 6 years ago lol. What I meant was the part was like $40 at the time, but the labor in 2018 was $750. The part being 'nothing.' But no, I get it. Mechanics probably dread the days that they have to tear a dash apart. My problem was that this clicking noise is in every chevy I've been in and it should have been addressed. BTW my zip tie quit working a year later and I've been slowly descending into madness every time I start my SS/SC.

Would never pay 900$ for such a small problem so I checked online to figure out how I can repair it my self but of course because I have a Chevy cobalt, the actuator is impossible to get to unless I remove the dash ( not going to happen lol) but thanks to you I don't have to deal with this annoying problem! Thank you!

I just did this on a 06 Monte Carlo. Its way different but the same idea, Once the glove box is removed completely then you see the door with a grille in front of it. Turn on the key and you see the door move then "knock" as it hits bottom. I tied a piece of hose into the grille bars to keep the door from going all the way closed. The recirculating door will always recirculate a bit of inside air but shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the great tip William Grundemann

Thanks William. Trying to sell the car. Most potential buyers were turned off by the clicking. Now no more noise. I fed a stiff wire through first and the used it to pull the tie wrap through. Drilled a small hole in the tie wrap to attach the wire.

February 2024 - Worked for me! I used some computer cable organizing ties that loop into each other. They weren't long enough alone so I was able to combine two together. Caution, my hand hurt quite a bit doing this process, I will say feeding the cable tie from the top to pass to yourself is MUCH easier and less painful.

I just bought a G5 today and the guy didn't tell me about this issue (and of course I didn't test all functions). Going to try this in the morning!! Edit/Update: You're an absolute legend! I haven't zip tied it yet, but I used a stick to stop it from raising fully and the clacking stopped. Big thanks!!

Thanks for the tip, but it doesn't seem applicable for my situation since mine clicks when the door closes and not when it opens. Seems those having this issue(in the video) is because the blend actuator. So blocking the door from opening all the way will get rid of the click if it's clicking on the last gears. Those having my issue(clicks when closing) seems to be the recirculating actuator. I took the wiper cover and wiper blades off to have access to the little cubby compartment where the blower motor and cabin filter is. From there it's very easy to access the door. I then had someone click the recirculating button (which recirculates the interior air and doesn't allow outside air) while I kept my finger in the way of it fully closing(where the cubby compartment is), and it didn't click anymore. So I could technically place something to block the door from closing all the way which will get rid of the clicking, but that means it's still going to allow some outside air to flow in to some degree. So it seems I'm going to attempt a replacement. Really wish my problem was the other way around :( .

How long does it last until you need to install another zip tie? By the way thanks soo much for your help. You saved me and the rest of us alot of time and money. 👍
@CrunchyStingray

So I used the zip tie method but this is what I ended up doing. I binded up 2 zip ties and bent the middle until it was somewhat straight. Then i bent the male end of the zip tie into 3 sections. Then I slid it in sideways on top of the air filter chamber then slide it around until it went through the middle back area. Then I used some needle nose pliers to grab the end of the zip tie and pull it in. This method only took a few tries to get it right. I have pretty big hands so they barely could reach in the air filter chamber and touch the back end. But if your going to attempt to stick your hand in there DO NOT HAVE THE CAR RUNNING WHEN YOU DO THIS. There is a fan just below past the air filter chamber that could seriously injure your hand.

@1:14 in the video I see the actuator on the right side of the cabin air filter housing. It's a tight squeeze but not that difficult to replace. The zip ties seem like more work to me although cheaper. I just bought a new actuator on Amazon for $20 and replace it. I only removed the glove box completely because it was in my way.

@tomandlindafirme1

My mechanic can't seem to give a precise estimate on this job till they get in to it..he quoted the maximum it could be ($600) but said it could be a lot less, since they don't have a lot of experience with this repair. Do you think the estimate should be closer to the $150 you paid? He said to bring it in when it gets worse , btw..so far it only lasts a few seconds after turning on the motor, then gets quiet..thanks, Tom Firme

THIS IS NOT THE AIRBAG COVER! :) This is the door to access the cabin air filter which is located behind the glove compartment. The airbag cover is on top of the dashboard. Please do not try and open the airbag cover as it may cause the airbag to deploy/malfunction and could cause serious injury.
