How to Fix Loose/Unresponsive PSP Square Button

When I got this used PSP I noticed the Square button didn't provide much feedback and when I changed the faceplate to a non Sony one the problem got even worse and I was able to find one article online offering a modification to help make the button have more of a springy feeling. I also show another optional modification you may want to try and also the easiest way to test the button once finished.

Thanks! The chinese face plate I got had a bit of a gap which made the square button tilt outward. Cutting up a rubber earphone bud worked pretty well.

This makes it better but its not very good still. Its probably like 60% better. I used 9 layers of my dogs black plastic poopbag :D It was tricky to get them to stay in the right place, but i got them and i dont even see them from the side of the screen or behind the button. Thanks for the video!

Almost 6 or 7 years ago when I was arounfd 9 or 10 I played DBZ tenkaichi tag team I decided to see what would happen if I twisted the button, it broke and I havent told my dad or brother how it happened. I wish I saw this video earlier lol!

Dude pls help me i jave a psp 2006 and it working but when i press vhs mode and i accidentally shut it sown after that i cant use the arrow and shapes buttons idk why but the volume botton and home buttons are working

Looks like you got stick drift the way the mouse moved slowly on its own. Did you fix that too? My issue is my circle button isn't squishy/bouncy like the other 3 buttons but it still works. Warranty sticker is still intact under battery. Is there a way to fix this without opening just in case I decide to sell it someday I can say it's never been opened?

Same thing happens with the right d-pad button because of the rubber pad cutting short on that side

My analog stick is wonky as hell,and the buttons feel like they are connected or something. Like I press X it does an action for R button.

Makes sense now that it's the square button seeing this video. Mine is like that to, thinking most poeple will be having a less clicky square button. With the psp go models this is not the case. Thx for sharing 👍

Thanks for posting this. I am not a very tech savvy person so forgive me in advance. I just got a custom/refurbished unit and the square button as well as up on the d pad sit almost flush with the faceplate and are don’t have much bounce back at all. They seem to be working fine but do you think this is a long term concern?

If if the buttons are functioning properly then I wouldn't mess with anything because since the silicone buttons are old and worn out they might further deteriorate if you mess with them. If the buttons quit working on their own then I'd open it up and do the mod. I'm not sure if by now there are 3rd party sellers that make new d-pad and face button membranes but if so then I'd just buy new replacements over the mod.

This may sound super weird but my Circle button wasn't working as well after 2 days of play time after 8 years. I bit on the circle button a bit (pressure on it a bit and it works) no need to unscrew it. I did a 1 hour testing in Patapon 2 and there were 0 problems.

What's going on chief. Yeah I gotta press so damn hard for it to register. Not sure what todo ordered a new membrane. Maybe a thin hard plastic in the center might help idk

It's likely that the rubber membrane needs replaced. I'd recommend buying a new one on Amazon.

If it’s not bothering you I’d probably leave it the way it is unless you buy a new rubber membrane or parts PSP in case something would break when you take it apart.

I don’t think it would be as easy to repair so the best option would be to see if anyone is selling the entire 4 button membrane as a separate part or if there’s anyone that makes them new.

I believe I used a glue stick to help hold it in place but so that it wouldn't be strong enough to permanently attach it.

Yes, I'd recommend either buying a cheap broken parts PSP and using they buttons and silicone membrane from it or if you do an eBay/Amazon search you should be able to find replacement parts. Since I put a new faceplate on mine and the screws didn't go in right and each time I kept taking it apart they would strip more I didn't want to put it back together, wait for the parts to come, and then take it apart again so if you don't mind spending a few more dollars and don't mind waiting you could order replacement parts for it.
