Oh well, I just bought a siding removal tool (yes, it also works for reattaching siding). This is the tool typically used for this job. Cost was about $10.00. This video offers a great essentially no cost fix but I did not have a paint lid opener. The actual siding removal tool has a lip that is about 5 times broader. As mentioned below, it might be a little riskier with the possibility of cracking brittle siding with this smaller paint lid opener. Nonetheless, I can not argue with the result on this nicely put together video. My situation was that the siding was only partially off in the middle. If that is the case, make sure you start at either end where the siding has disengaged and work your way methodically through to the other side. If you are having trouble coming from one particular side go to the other side. Thanks PV for your help.

The siding zipper tools are the item designed to fix this type of thing. It's interesting you found something else that may work. The single point of contact may be more likely to break the siding, specially if it's cold out. I got a zipper tool for $10 and it's a wide metal connection so I think it may be less likely to break the lip of the siding. Thanks for this video.

Thanks for your video!! It's really windy here today, and I have siding that's just blowing in the wind. It's waaay up high, though, right next to the roof's apex (2-story). I tried using my ladder and a super long telescopic tree trimmer to try to push it back on, but it's about a foot shy. Btw, do you think a squirrel could've pulled that piece and gained access to the attic that way? I've been hearing some banging sounds in the morning and early afternoon, as well as what sounded like the proverbial "acorn rolling." I hope I'm just imagining things!

Never had vinyl siding but your video helped a lot. My problem is the starter strip at the bottom was installed a little high and the nails are 12-15" apart so the strip is loose. Also the strip was not nailed thru the tube sheet. So I'd like to completely remove the bottom two runs of siding. Can I do this without removing all the panels?

Siding is installed from the bottom up. The bottom piece of the siding hooks onto the track and the top part of piece is nailed in place. If it fell at the top then the nailing strip may have separated from the wall. It would need to be reattached and any decorative piece reapplied

Nice video, I’m gonna try this. I have that tool but paid I think $1 or $2 at Lowe’s. (Not sure if they give it for free if you buy paint?) I instead used it about 5 years ago to remove the crankshaft and camshaft seals from my Miata engine while doing a timing belt change. Much safer for the shaft than using a pick, as I’ve seen in other videos. But I digress. I seem to have a long J-piece that runs horizontally and has completely separated from the bottom run of siding. Do I even need that J-piece if I have the starter strip underneath?

What if there is nothing to hook the siding to? I see a piece that looks like it probably came loose and is about an inch below the bottom edge of siding. We were ripped off when we had this installed and had to sue the contractor, so its a very sloppy job. I tried to get another person that installs siding to help with it, but some code for contractors, they would not to get involved.

@PhillipsVision

@@ericyu5827 that will be hard since the starter strip is the track that the bottom piece of siding is mounted to. You could carefully raise the bottom piece of siding and attach the starter strip to the structure. Once installed carefully attach the siding using the method I showed in the video.

@@PhillipsVisionThanks for replying. I'm not sure exactly how siding works. Are there any nails or screws used to secure vinyl siding that may have come loose to have caused it to come off track to begin with? Or are there just those tracks holding it in place? I get a lot of wind because my house is located at the bottom of a verrry steep hill. A piece came loose on the northwest side. Also, there are no trees yet to block the wind, and the houses are far apart.
