How To Fix Rusty Cab Corners! The Heartwarming Journey Of A Neglected 1948 GMC

Hey we are back on the 1948 GMC pickup rust repair. This time I will be replacing the cab corner. Although the video is about 1947-1954 Chevy or Gmc trucks, the process is largely the same for welding cab corners on any make or model of truck from any era including modern trucks. Aftermarket cab corners, when available, will always have some fitment issues, but they are often better than starting with nothing and can be manipulated to produce an acceptable repair.

Like seeing those old body work fixes that seem so crude today. A lot of brazing a lot of screen wire and straight enamel paint over crude putty work with 36 grit sand marks, pile on paint with the thought that there is a fine line between a run and a shine. I was there 50 + years ago doing that kind of work. Great job Kyle love watching.

Hi Kyle, Pryotechnicals to start + good tips/expanations/demonstrations in the middle + kitties at the end = another good video. While I enjoy a (VERY) few shows on TV... none are as enjoyable and informative as your productions. Good timing to get that side done before cleaning had to happen. Just sweep it all under the truck to the other side and continue. I'm glad that the videos are starting to make a little bit of monetary sense. It would be a darned shame to put out that effort otherwise. Have a good one.

Hey... it was a simple tip but I try to give back to those who have given so much. ;) You need a helper/slave. Whenever I do work for my brother I say that the clean-up is his job and I walk away. Yes, take care of the cats. They would start eating you after 48 hours if you died. Smelling like a sandwich might make them not wait until you croak.

@beatglauser9444
@beatglauser9444 Год назад
Honestly, the cut out piece you showed us prooves one thing: It held up for quite a while. We used to repair daily beaters just like that as well back in the days. Often you only repaired it in order to pass regular inspections that cars had to pass to stay roadlegal. If you know that a vehicle has only a few years left before it is crashed that is good enough. Often the use of bondo was the cheaper way to go. Of course that is not the way you do it, if you want to restore a classic. I heard of cars that were "restored" in the States with incredible things done: I heard of a guy who imported a 57 T-Bird and was very proud of his car. One thing was strange though: The side windows could not be rolled down enough. When they removed the door panel and took a look inside the doors they found out that the lower parts of the doors were filled with construction cement!
@CarterAutoRestyling
@CarterAutoRestyling Год назад
I don't mind the old repairs that were done to keep the vehicle on the road, like you said they did what they had to do to keep an old junker going. If those repairs hadn't been done then the vehicle would have gone to scrap and be lost forever. What I don't like is digging into someone elses bad restoration work or something that was tarted up for an auction, those cars are always a mess haha

Oh that is purty and you can tweak and fill it a bit till your happy. I install flashing on brick chimneys as part of the tuck pointing restoration we do. If the chimney is squareish and the roof is level, l measure out what I need in standard 7 inch flashing and I hold a piece long enough and mark my cuts. Once I have that done I cut all the pieces I need, take one side, hold it up to the cut, mark the top 45 bend area, and then grab the other side piece and mark it in mirror against my first side so when I bend them both they pretty much match up. I usually mark the bend lines on both against the corners and bend them with a clamp style hand bender or just fold it around by hand. Then I put in the bottom piece of metal and mark the bends for them against it in place. Like you said things move as you bend and work them so if you mark it and bend everything at once it probably won't fit once you try to put it in. I always bring more flashing than I need because sometimes you make a mistake and a piece does not fit and you have to adjust and make a new one. If I get it right it's folded around like a Christmas present and all the 45 folds are the same looking with each other and everything looks level. One of the nicest jobs I did was in 10 inch copper on a historical house, everything looked perfect and no leaks 😎

More interesting techniques to understand. I like the close-up shots here and there. Camera work matters in these things. I can see that you think like a videographer, at least to some extent. I don't mind some ads, and YT ads tend to be short, or I can clip it if I already know the product or the ad, which I do. People watching this channel want to actually be able to do it ourselves, so we need to understand the approach and the nuances of the technique, which you provide. Professional videos on car stuff tend to be unbelievably glib and just gloss everything, which has no value for doers.

I hear you on the professional videos lacking any substance, my only goal with the camera work is just to make sure I'm not blocking it most of the time haha. Thanks for watching!

Hey Kyle I know you dont have much time to read or reply to comments but You should do some shorts. I use an android phone and use pause to edit. No editing and each video gets huge amounts of subs. would help you make your youtube more of a business.

I love the way you approach this work. You are my favorite go to youtuber for common sense body work on my old 50 chevy truck. I'm an old guy but welding and body work were new to me, but now I'm managing to fix up (not restore) my truck. Thanks for all your informative and entertaining videos.

Over here in England, we naturally stop every 8 to 10 minutes to make a cup of tea, so the adverts are an absolute blessing. For the rest of the world, who just tug on the nearest ring pull, they'll be more of a nuisance.
