How to Fix Sloppy Shift Linkage Honda Civic CRX & Acura Integra

Replacing shift linkage to help eliminate the slop in the shifter. I used the linkage from a 92-95 civic but it was about an inch longer. I shortened it and welded it back together. The plastic-like bushing that is in the front of the linkage wore down after 369,xxx miles. As you can see in the video, the new linkage has significantly less movement in the joint.
My wagon was getting stuck in 5th gear and I was hoping this would help but it didn't do the trick. It looks like I have some internal transmission issues. I may try to rebuild it eventually but for now I'm going to leave it alone. I can always get it out of gear as long as I start doing so before fully depressing the clutch.

I put those U joints in a table vice and squeezed them until they were tight again, against those plastic washers. Worked fantastically. Shifter is nice and tight again like brand new. Best of all- free.

That's interesting. I'm going to try that, thanks for the tip!

Garage Built Hondas yeah it's super easy. You're a crafty dude and I like your vids so I figured I'd share my technique.

Garage Built Hondas and another secret--- the linkage sleeve that slides onto the transmission rod where that lock pin goes-- that can be hammered to slightly off shape it, which makes it fit much tighter once the pin is put back in. That pin connection piece is prone to wearing out and getting the wiggles. I've seen guys make pieces that replace the pin, and they want to sell you this piece. My method takes all the play out and again it's free..! 😁

can you do a video on way to fix this issue with out welding. also replacement of the shifter bushings?
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 7 лет назад
There really isn't any way to fix the joint unless you get the "no-play" upgrade which is also a weld on part. The joint internals just get worn out over time. This video will help remove and replace yours. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tECCDTshLDI.html

my Si has this problem. what do change to make it good? I don't want to changed the whole shift linkage.
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 8 лет назад
You can disassemble the u-joint and use a combination of washers and a new bolt but that's about it. Swapping the linkage is very easy if you can find one in great shape still.

The old 90's Hondas has the most reliable engines its because back then they didn't have computerized technology take my 97 Accord for example everything inside is simple and it always starts up the first time every time without taking a few seconds like most cars do I highly doubt the newer Hondas can go pass 300,000 miles without falling apart

I'm being told my bushings may be the problem, but whenever I hit the gas or let off, my gears make a clunking sound..sort of as if the gear wants to pop out. Squeaky in neutral too..

The transmission was leaking when I first bought it but that was it. The car runs great still and gets good mpg's too. The transmission is leaking again though. I missed something and it's so annoying to have to drop it again.

Did you ever figure out the whole getting stuck in fifth gear thing, mine gets stuck in fifth after replacing the clutch
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 5 лет назад
I never inspected the trans. I believe it was a lack of fluid in the transmission over time and a synchro/gear is probably damaged.
@thesoulxsociety5068
@thesoulxsociety5068 5 лет назад
@@GarageBuiltHondas Thanks for the reply, but damn stomach dropped.. I think you're right because my shift linkage seems fine, but I did notice when changing the clutch how dirty and how little fluid came out of the transmission, guess it's time for a trip to the junkyard again lol

@@GarageBuiltHondas that's awesome then I think I'm going to look for an si trans too because my crx has a zc motor in it and I believe that's like Japan's d16 right? If so i think it'll be a good match, Sorry just bought this crx and I've been trying to figure it out.. last owner didn't really take good care of it
@GarageBuiltHondas

That's correct, it'll be a really good match and you'll notice the shorter gear set right away. If you're mpfi already that thing will move!

if you are still having a lot of play after you change the linkage, it is the shifter I am sure of it. The bushings in the shifter are worn I have the same problem with my 99civic em1, replace the shifter with maybe the K tuned shifter I just grabbed one and I'm about to install it, you should have no play after wards
