How to fix slow speed problems after servicing a record changer - when all else has failed.

Have you serviced your record changer, cleaned and lubricated the motor, replaced the idler wheel and its still slow? Here's something you might try.
DISCLAIMER: Not recommended for machines using a turret & idler drive system. This is not guaranteed to fix all problems. Results Vary. May increase rumble if machining isn't precise. Assumption is you've done the services needed. DO NOT USE THIS TO MASK LACK OF SERVICE. Blah, blah, blah.

Absolute mad lad. I’m totally doing this. I am .8 RPM off and tried the tape trick, but need something I can finely tune like this! Brilliant. Thank you!!

Have you tried clear coat nail polish? I've tried it with excellent results.

you could also increase the voltage to the the motor. Or you chould put some wire shrink around it. Good solution with the JB weld though. Unfortunately mine is sporadic. Will be 45rpm then suddenly will hear a change to 39rpm

I have an old BSR from a readers digest console system that runs fast. Is this something I can easily adjust or do i need to pull the platter off to make adjustments? Or should I just take it to a repair center?
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 2 месяца назад
BsR tables are almost always fast by a couple percent. Pull the platter and check for debris buildup on the motor pulley first, scrape off if any and try again.

Have you every tried to use fine sand paper to do the same thing? Cut it into a strip and holding the ends in your fingers, you would use it like a sanding belt. I would think you could trim the excess epoxy down to the correct size in no time. Tom

THOMMGB this works well for fine adjustments, but if the epoxy it out of round this method doesn't correct it well

Another excellent video. I've dealt with BSRs that played fast, so I've had to file the shaft down to the right speed, but never a slow one. Great idea. By the way, on my brothers' Dual I messaged you about maybe a year ago (belt-driven CS 450), the speed is too fast. There are two holes in the bottom of the motor, one is marked H, the other L. Is this the way to adjust the speed? I have turned the screws in them, but nothing happens. I am puzzled. Are you familiar with these? Perhaps to slow it down, I may have to build up the pulley with JB Weld, if nothing else helps.
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 7 лет назад
+Gary Spinelli I'm not too familiar with that model. Sometimes they stamp the chassis for more than one model. The motor speed could be separate on another board or on the motor housing itself

I recently got a 1969 German Perpetuum Ebner PE 2001 record changer that has this exact problem! Especially the 78 speed is very far off, but the others are a bit too. But the pulley on this changer is HUGE and I'm afraid the tiniest uneven amount of glue added might cause wow and flutter. Spare pullies and motors are gonna be difficuilt to find. Also, where I'm from it's very expensive to get some JB Weld. Is it also possible to do this with super glue?
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 5 месяцев назад
With a large pulley it's better to calculate the enlargement necessary and have a machinist make a replacement. Also make sure your idler and or turret drive is in top shape.
@linus-clocksnmusic
@linus-clocksnmusic 5 месяцев назад
@@JordanPier The idler is very soft and the platter has a very acceptable grip (having to press with quite a some pressure to get it to stop). The motor on this one doesn't seem to fail, I think it's rather a factory error since all speeds are affected differently and the idler still flexing like new. The pulley can be unscrewed, so if I mess it up I could replace it (if I find a spare motor)

I have an old Garrard that runs too fast, not slow....No adjustments on the motor or anywhere. What do you suggest to do?
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 6 лет назад
margaretsville pull the platter and check that the idler wheel is.on the proper pulley size.and not brushing the top of the 45 pulley. Also check for accumulation of rubber from the idler wheel, which will increase diameter and make.it run fast
@EddieJazzFan

thanks friend, I'll give it a shot
@MonsterMovee

The question is what caused it to run slow in the 1st place. It didn't run slow from the factory. Maybe the idler wheel needs to be larger because it shrunk over time. Get a new rubber idler.
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 7 лет назад
+MonsterMovee a bad idler will cause a loss of torque (causing stall during reject cycle), but will usually hold speed in a single tier idler system. It's true that in a double tier idler system increasing the diameter of the top tier can raise the speed -and this should be noted to the machinist that rebuilds your idler (vm, Terry witt, etc) The idler was already replaced in this example. The reason for the slow down (assuming all else has been serviced) is usually due to a decrease in motor pulley diameter (due to wear from prolonged use of an idler that's turned to granite), or a loss of magnetism in the rotor of the motor. In the 1st case this is identified by one particular speed that is slow (most wear) and the others are close to accurate. The 2nd case is almost always equally slow on all 4 speeds.

Thanks for your answer. That's good to know.

This does work but even after buffing the Work with 1200 and 2500 sandpaper it is still too noisy , any suggestions? The speed is correct but the jb weld Section of the spindle is too noisy . I have serviced the table correctly.
@JordanPier
@JordanPier Год назад
That's the tough part, is getting it round enough it doesn't induce rumble.

@@tomtribuzio69 the best advice I have is use an emery board and find a way to brace it on a fulcrum so you have absolute control of the flat side touching the pulley. I listen for the sound of contact, which if noisy Will be a buzz. Lightest pressure is needed to abraid the slightly out of round bit of the pulley until the buzz changes to more of a hiss

The reason why a lot of vintage turntables run slow is because the motor magnets lose some of their magnetism over time
@kevinmelecio9488

How you fix that ?
@quad1000

That is more of a wow and flutter problem as opposed to speed.

My problem is a little different. Ive put my turntable platter on a different BSR player and it spins perfectly fine, but ive put it on the one im trying to fix, and it spins too slow. So i know my platter is working fine, but the unit itself isnt giving the platter enough power. Any thoughts?

How did you apply the JB weld to get a decent but thin coat necessary for the speed increase. I did the math and it only needs a thousandths or 2 to increase the speed.
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 3 года назад
Lightly sanded the pulley with 1000 grit, applied carefully with qtip stick and let dry, then machined down using an exacto while motor pulley was running. Sand with 600 grit for fine tuning

Got it. Thx so much for the advice.

Can you sand down the JB weld or nail polish with fine sand paper or Emory cloth wrapped around the spinning rotor or is an xacto knife better
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 3 года назад
If you're good with it an exacto is fastest, but fine sandpaper I'm sure would work just as well.
@GrumpyBumpy

I was considering something like a shrink wrap over the stepped rotor but your JB Weld idea makes good sense. I will try that.

@@GrumpyBumpy I honestly never thought of trying shrink wrap it heatshrink. I thought it might slip on the pulley. May have to try that for shitsngiggles

They make a small shrink wrap used for labelling wires in a Dymo labeler that looks pretty small.

GEs always ran too slow. BSRs and Garrards always ran too fast. And yes, in all cases, right out of the carton. VM, Magnavox/Collaro, and RCA changers did not have this issue. All of the popular changers seemed to have issues of their own, though. Except Magnavox/Collaro. They were precisely engineered mechanical miracles with few moving parts that were built to last forever. VM had issues with their automatic disc sizing, and RCA had tone arm tracking problems with 45s. Yep. The company that developed 45s made changers that didn't like to play them. Go figure.
