I used to spend a fortune going to coffee shops, not to socialise but just to sit staring at my phone and paying top whack for coffee. I bought a small coffee machine in the sales, made my home environment more comfortable, played my own choice of music, always got a window seat in my own home 😁 and used the screen time to watch tutorials or listen to podcasts. I've saved SO MUCH money!

My bad habit was spending way too much time on Instagram. (The negative feelings I got from scrolling through my feed eventually outweighed the positive). I realise I had to prioritise my mental health and slowly wean myself out of it. I started off by deleting the app from my phone. A couple of months passed and I realised how much better I felt without it so I decided to just deactivate my account all together. And it’s funny how you mentioned about the extreme identity. I tell people I’m not on IG or any of the other main social networking sites now (FB, SC, Twitter) and they can’t believe a 22 year old no longer uses any of those sites and funnily enough, you kinda earn their respect lol. It’s been about a year and I’m not even tempted to go back. Partly cuz I’ve taken on that identity now and partly cuz of Black Mirror haha

Aimee B This is good - recognising the reasons why you had the app, why you were using it and how it made you feel. If an app is all about you comparing yourself to others then it's ultimately damaging 💛

I was in the same situation! And feel 100% better without all those (fb, snapchat, instagram). Now I go pick up my phone and realize there's nothing really I want to do on it, so I go to something else! Reading, meditating, etc. just cultivating new helpful habits that make me feel good.

I was paying a high cable bill. My TV habits were to procrastinate or just use the TV to make noise in the house. I wasn't enjoying much of what I watched and the content wasn't improving my life. I turned off the cable, which meant no TV at all. (I live in the mountains.) I do have Netflix. So when I want to watch TV, it is with intention and purpose. I put on music specific to what I'm doing, or I enjoy the silence. My life is more mindful and so much better.

In the last few months I broke the habit of negative self talk. I think it was definitely linked to how I used social media. But now I take a more mindful approach to how I speak to myself and whenever I feel that autopilot kick in I work to make sure I’m not using an negative words about myself!

I tried so many methods and nothing worked...but wow I think I just realised why: of course I always knew what was good or bad for me but I never saw starting or dropping a habit as an act of self love. I will try to connect that now. So when the early alarm rings or it's time to brush my teeth, the gym class reminder comes up on my phone or I look at that bunch of unpaid bills on my desk, I will go straight at it and tell myself that I'm doing this because I love myself and focus on that feeling that I really deserve to have a good and happy life, to like the way I am and the lifestyle I have until it becomes natural to do what's best for me. Thank you for making this video Muchelle! It feels really good to have realised that. We'll see how it works :)

I am self-employed and tried to work from home the first 3 months of my self-employment. I often felt disappointed in myself, since I didn't feel like i was very productive or motivated to do what I was supposed to. I experimented with going out: working from coffeeshops and stuff like that, but it seemed that it only gave me a "short fix". I was beginning to doubt my skills, but I took an "extreme" decision to invest in an office-space, even though I was very short on money. However, the drastic change of environment, and the fact that there were other people at the office who was very happy to see me, totally changed everything! I have been there for about 2 weeks now and I have produced SO SO much - at least 3 times as much as I did before. Totally the best decision ever.

Wasting time on social media is a habit I have been working on since the first of year. I took 4 weeks off social media, deleted accounts I did not really need, uninstalled facebook off of my phone so I am forced to only use it when on my pc (and no more of those mornings before I ever get out of bed browsing and wasting time on facebook) and limiting my time online till my daily do's and my goal items have been completed. I am still not perfect with it yet but I bet my time online has gone down 50% or more. I am even doing 1 tech free day each week and those days are the best! Love the vid. Thanks for the good content.

So happy that you’re working on swapping to cruelty free products! Your channel always gives me motivation to better myself, I don’t know how one person can radiate so much positivity! One habit I definitely want to break is to finally stop doing all of my uni work last minute. I would love to finally be organised and motivated enough to do work as I go along because as the deadline gets closer I get so stressed out I end up crying, and as I try to get everything done my sleeping and eating patterns suffer and it makes me miserable.

This video has helped me set a different mindset towards trying to quit smoking! I haven't smoked for more than 2 weeks now and progressive extremism has really helped me! I now don't even crave to smoke and almost don't think about it that often. I am aware I have to keep focus but seeing myself as a non-smoker made it easier instead of trying to quit. So thanks for this video!

That monkey mind not brushing teeth after falling asleep accidentally is so shamefully relate-able!😭❤ Never thought about it as me treating myself but makes so much sense! Definitely gonna try the 5-4-3-2-1 method, only issue I could see (knowing me) is falling asleep again before I finish counting to 1.

Awesome tips! I can really see myself implementing them into my day to day life. One bad habit that I've broken: I used to keep my phone beside me when I was studying or trying to be productive, resulting in procrastinating on my social media lol. So now I literally turn off my phone completely and leave it in another room. The urge to get up, turn on my phone and check it is pretty much dead at this point because of the non-convenient aspect.

I had a bad habit of constantly checking the time on my phone. Only a minute or two would pass and I would click my screen again to check the time. It had been really triggering my anxiety causing me to always feel like time was running out. I switched my phone to military time to force myself to take a moment to pause and calculate what time it was. This allowed me to take a second to breathe anytime I checked the time. It's been a few years now and it really helped me. I haven't changed my phone from military time and I do not check it as often anymore.

I'm trying to break the habit of checking my phone as sson as I wake up. I am now grabing a book! I was suprised to discover that reading books help me wake up as much as reading SNS feeds. The difference is I feel less slugish when I read the book first fing instead of the phone. I feel so much better now. :)

I used to do this too, so here is my tip for you: do exercise while you are watching Netflix. I usually do stretching and the type of exercises where you can be on the floor (push ups, planks, sit ups, leg lifting etc). Then you are watching your favourite show AND working out! :) Make sure that you have plenty of water nearby too!

If it's a hand-to-mouth habit (like smokers get too) maybe a little pot or stick of lip balm might help to substitute the action of popping snacks in your mouth? 😊

Heres the secret: Cut out each individual snack you like eating one by one every week or few days. Starting from your least favorite and eventually the chocolate lol. Then start eating fruit while netflix instead. Watch what happens.

I made a New Years resolution this year to stop using facebook, I saw this article on going 30 days with no internet. I realised I literally scroll through the same mind numbing things on facebook multiple times a day so I just deleted the app off my phone and didn’t log into facebook for the whole of January. I have it back now purely to get in contact with certain people but I have no interest in it now. Even when I occasionally go onto the app I scroll for about 30 seconds and get bored and log off and I feel so much better for it!

I used to watch QVC all the time. I would often buy things as well. In December of last year I told myself that I had to stop. I told myself that I would stop watching (and thus buying) for 30 days starting in January. I was able to do it, and now in mid-February I am still keeping to that decision. I did turn it on once this month, but after just a few minutes I turned it off. As part of the decision to stop watching, I deleted the app from my iPad and turned off all email notifications. I feel really great about it!

I was just looking for content on habit building and you uploaded this, haha! Excellent stuff as always. A habit that I had broken was constantly checking all social media platforms- I started letting go of each platform and changed the content on the platforms that I continued to us. It was completely easy to go cold turkey on Facebook and Instagram, I have changed my following list on Twitter to people that mainly talk about my field of work that constantly reminds me to progress in my domain and I restrict RU-vid content to channels like yours- channels that make me wanna get up and do things, and those that make me feel positive. :)

It started out by me wanting to brush & floss + two more minor dental regime habits everynight before sleep. It took me around 20 mins to do it, I'd either go through with it all or not do it at all. Aiming perfection of the regime wasn't doing me any good; If I didn't do it.. I'd vaguely wake up once or twice thinking of it. So I just let it be.. The guilt followed and this time I did it without a miss for months. Over a year. Now it's such a hard core habit that after brushing.. If I didn't go to bed right away, I get uncontrollably sleepy.. My brain takes it as a signal to sleep😂😂 Tip: I let go of the perfection

I deleted fb for 8 months in 2016. Was THE BEST social media detox! I didn't even miss it. Now that I have it again, Ive only friended people I actually know, and just family & close friends. I don't spend alot of time on there even now, I got rid of Instagram AGES ago, I think Instagram is really bad for people's self esteem, and causes them to compare their lives to those of others. I know people who have become so obsessed with Instagram that they literally live on there and try to present their own lives as something they are NOT, its SOO negative

Ahah easy one !! I just put water and dish soap in the blender and mix it, let the blender clean it and then simply rince it under the tap

I quite liked this video (and I'm picky). I recently finally stopped taking my laptop to bed with me. Actually, I had the same problem that you had - I would cozy up in bed and watch TV series on my laptop and would then be so tired that I'd just fall asleep without brushing my teeth. Then one day I bought a desk (unrelated reason) and I made a decision to not take my laptop in my bed. I also turned the bed away from the desk, so I cannot watch TV while in bed. As a result, I've been reading a lot more before bed, I wake up better rested, and I no longer get headaches from too much screen time. I also became a vegan using your method but that's an entirely different story :-)

I used to NEVER floss then I sort of realized tangible rewards for flossing. A gum surgeon that I saw told me that if everyone flossed no one would have gum disease. For some reason that really resonated with me. Once I started flossing regularly I noticed that my teeth seemed whiter when I had flossed the night before.

Related to the 'make a decision'-point: When ever i feel like i should be doing something, but it is easier to not do it i ask myself 'is it a good idea to xyz (for example get up and get the dry laundry)?' For some reason this works really well with short tasks :)

I had a bad habit of scrolling through instagram for hours a day. I deleted the app, forgot about it for about a year and then remembered and re-installed it. Since having it again, I hardly ever go on it. I found the more I posted on instagram, the more I would go on to check my likes, etc. and then start the scrolling cycle. Now I only post if I feel there is something important to share. I also had a really bad habit of grinding my teeth. I became more aware that it was a harmful habit with my front bottom tooth started getting shorter than the others. I realized it was caused by stress. After 10 years, I left my stressful job, and now 1 year after having a more laid back schedule, I realized I don't do it anymore.

I knew you were a vegan! I’ve only just started watching your videos and you keep talking about how you are always “hangry” and you even mentioned having food make you feel better! You should try Keto and fasting. Your need for food to make you happy will disappear. Stabilize your blood sugar and you’ll change your life. ✌️❤️

I used to stay a looooong time before i go to sleep scrolling my phone, all my social medias, even if i knew nothing new came out. And (new year resolutions hehe) i forced myself to let my phone far away from my bed and since i'm lucky to have a bunkbed so it makes it easier to not go back to it when i'm in bed. And I replaced this lost time by reading a ton of books, and i sleep more and better !

You are so real! I hate to admit but I totally can relate to falling asleep and not brushing my teeth. It pissed me off because it so gross. Yet, i do it!!!! 😖 at least it’s not everyday! I share your video because more people need to watch you hun! Ugh wish you were in Canada and we could hang 😝

I have used progressive extremism with social media apps! I don't use them until after I have eaten lunch. After lunch I can decide if I want to go on them today because some days i realize that i don't even want to but would as a habit. Some days I want to and I will after lunch. It has been great and worked great for me!!

Great video! I definitely broke some serious bad habits in my lifetime. I quit smoking (on second attempt), mostly by observing the habit first, making those rules for myself (e.g., no smoking in the apartment, no smoking before breakfast), and then driving it home with Alan Carr's Easy Way to Quit Smoking book. I quit binge drinking a long time ago, mostly with the help of yoga and mindfulness, and while I've continued drinking in moderation for years and it is not a problem for me, I haven't had a drink this year yet, because I just wanted to see if it would impact my life in any way. I don't spend much time on social media, but I've noticed that I've started checking Facebook more often again (bah!), I don't have Facebook and messenger apps on my phone. and I normally don't have my phone in my bedroom, but with my current living arrangement I need it in my bedroom for alarm (that's gonna change in a few months). So yeah... ton of self-improvement over the years, and of course there are still things that I want to cull or improve on. But I think that to make a change you have to find a right mix of techniques to assist you, and those might be different for different habits. Shit, this is a long comment, I'm sorry!

i used to go on my phone all the time when i was 11 - 13. all i did was turn on do not disturb and do what i liked doing like reading and i’d literally forget i even had a phone. it sounds super easy so i’m think i didn’t check my phone because i’m even so lazy that i don’t do something unless i’ve been called to do it like a notification. i’m 15 now and i still hardly go my phone :)

I was addicted to frozen coke and then I noticed stains beginning to form on my teeth (never had any before). It was easy to stop after that. I also went for a small hike and had to keep stopping while OLD people were powerwalking past me. I obviously underestimated the negative effects of the bad stuff I was doing, so, a "reality check" could be another trigger for breaking out of a bad habit.
