Craig, thank you! Soon I will replace an EGR and this thermostat. Both videos helped me much to understand that I can do it by myself and avoid overpriced services. The only thing, I just figured out, is that MK3 Mondeo Duratec HE engines have two models of thermostat, one with electric connector (temp sensor or electronic control?) and one without it. The model without it is cheaper and was used in Mondeo manufactured from 2005 to end of production in 2007. Older Mondeo´s thermostat has that electronic connector. I own one of the last (02/2007) so I took a look there and it confirms it. (German model, it is possible that UK models have this otherwise)

I just did this on a 2008 Focus SE (USA model). On mine, I also needed to remove the transmission dipstick tube in order to get clearance to remove the intake manifold. This was per the Ford maintenance book I bought online for $15 (it's a CD with the service manual, worth every penny). And the manual is right, it wasn't possible to get any clearance until I removed it. There are two bolts. First follow the line down with your hand under the throttle body area and wiring harnesses. There is a bolt securing the tube there. Then, under the car, reach a hand up on top of transmission housing and find where the tube enters it, and the bolt right next to it that secures the tube to top of transmission. Undo that one (by feel alone). Finally, shimmy the tube back and forth while pulling up with some strength to free it from the housing. Oh, and make sure you clean around the area with a rag FIRST to minimize debris entering the transmission from that open hole. To get back in, have a friend push and shimmy from above while you guide into the hole from below the vehicle, again by feel. It's a little frustrating but possible.

If you are going to reuse the old hoses, then also reuse the factory spring style clamps. Reason being is they have embedded into the hose and placing a different clamp there will cause problems. Make sure the old spring clamps are in the exact same position on the hose that they were before you removed the hose. If you are using brand new hoses, then feel free to use either spring style or band style. Also, I recommend spending the extra money and purchasing a Ford or Motorcraft thermostat housing. Don't purchase the cheapy aftermarket 'made in China' part. You are risking a leak or worse. Since this repair is kind of a pain to do, you want the repair to last for years. I know it may cost more, but it's worth it. Use the dealer part here. Great video. Thanks!

Moben pliers are the correct tool for these spring clips. We use these clips on the assembly line at JCB Power Systems and they come with a one hit plastic clip on them to hold them in the open position whilst they're fitted. You could probably open them and slip a small washer over the ears to do the same thing.

Thanks for the great video! The needle of the thermometer of my 2002 Monty has not been moving a lot since September. I thought it's not very critical and only recently learned (from my brother) that it actually is quite critical. Also driving at -20 C (in Finland) was not very pleasant because the heater was hardly blowing any warm air. Now I need to find a new thermostat and try replacing. Hopefully the weather is getting a bit warmer before that. I'm having my first car (and I'm already 57) and there seem to be a lot of things to be learned. I like your soft/calm presenting style and clear book English(suits for non natives).
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 7 лет назад
You mean it doesn't get warm at all? Usually they heat up but not all the way to the correct 95 deg C... I suppose in -20 C the situation is different. What does the dash report the CHT as? Your stat has probably failed in the same manner that mine did.
@nokkis7340
@nokkis7340 7 лет назад
It does heat up but only to 30-40 C (so the temp needle isnt moving). Today I was able to see the temp from the dash (thanks again for your video. I did not know about the dash diagnostics). I also tried replacing the thermometer but could not get the cooling liquid out of the system. But now I have a better sucking device and will try again tomorrow. The weather is also better as it's currently around 0 C. I drove about 5000 km with a cold engine. I just wonder what it might have caused?! I did notice slightly increased petrol consumption.

Spring type clamps are better. First thing is they are not sharp and don't damage the hose as the ones you screw on. Second, you can get pliers that are made just for taking off these spring clamps, and they work really good, since the grab the clamp properly. Also when you putting the spring clamps back you want to manoeuvre them in the same exact place they were in originally. That will make any kind of leaks much less likely.

HI Craig, thank you for these videos. I too have an HE14 duratec engined car. Mine is a prototype which has always struggled with dissipating heat. I think I have discovered a design fault though. The large hose coming from the thermostat goes to my radiator's upper connection (top hose), however, I have been told that the hose concerned is, in-fact, the water inlet to the engine not the outlet. Can you confirm my belief please?

I'm not sure about the Focus. The room between the manifold and the radiator is most annoying and it's possible that the Focus has less. The extension is not very long, maybe 5" +-.

hey i have a mondeo and i get a p1432 bad thermostat sensor when i start the car it struggles to start and when it works very rich and idle 1200-1300. is it because of the sensor thermostat or is it something else? a car going fine without a problem is just the first start problem. please help me :(
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 4 года назад
The code relates to the thermostat heater circuit, either failed at the stat or a problem in the wiring/connection, it will affect the cooling at wide-open-throttle so not usually a practical problem unless you thrash the car. Your rich state and high idle may suggest a vacuum leak but could be anything else related to air/fuel, you will need to work thru a diagnosis.

So is it possible to change the thermostat without changing the coolant? How much coolant will flow off the system?
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 8 лет назад
No, the expansion tank is directly above the thermostat. You could try to remove the hose quickly and block it off before losing too much but it would be messy. And as you see in the video, 'removing the hose quickly' is unrealistic.

So how much coolant will flow out if I change the thermostat? Is it possible to do the job without removing the bottom cover?
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 8 лет назад
If you don't drain the system you'd lose all the coolant in the expansion tank, out the thermostat hose when you take it off. It would also end up all over the air con compressor and belt which is not ideal. The proper thing to do is to drain and change the coolant at the same time - see this vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-loB5tDd4jow.html Alternatively, if your coolant is newish and you don't want to replace it, you could try to collect and re-use the expansion tank fluid, by catching it with a funnel, hose, and container outside the car. (You are still likely to end up spilling a bit but maybe not too much if you're quick and careful).
@marko_._
@marko_._ 8 лет назад
+Craig's DIY Car Jobs I put new coolant fluid last year and this is why I don't want to change it now. So I still have to remove the bottom front cover to change the thermostat?! I mean the one on front, not the one which covers the whole engine.
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 8 лет назад
If you mean the radiator undershield, no you only need to take that off to drain coolant. If you mean the front grill, that and the headlight needs to come out in order to access the thermostat. That's all.

@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 8 лет назад
Can't be sure sorry, it does sound like it is faulty. It's not an expensive item after all. You can 'test' a little by running the engine up to max temperature, then putting the heater on full, also the AC (which will turn on the radiator fan), and monitor the temperature using dash or scan tool - it should fall a little, but go back up as the thermostat sorts it out. If it falls a lot and struggles to come back, thermostat probably sticking open.
@user-ld4tx4tn5w

Yes I enter a test mode on the instrument cluster, and monitor the temp. Then the AC is OFF, engine temp up to 102C and fun is run, next temp is fall to 97-98C and fun is off, and temp go back up to102C. But if the AC is ON the temp very slowly up and fun is always running.

If you mean the fan keeps running even once the coolant temperature as dropped, and the A/C is off, I'm not sure. Maybe an electrical problem, so long as the thermostat is allowing engine to both warm-up and not overheat. Maybe something simple like sticking relay for the fan, try swapping it with another known good?
@marko_._
@marko_._ 7 лет назад
Nobody knows what causes the problem. The engine is just overheating or smth like that. The engine temperature is 90 degrees but the cooler fan is working endlessly after reaching 90 degrees. ( ok actually 10 minutes after that). And when i stopped my car and let the engine work at 1000rpm, the fan went to double speed after 15 minutes!!! (dashoard engine temperature was still 90). Any ideas?
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 7 лет назад
If it's 90 deg then it's not overheating (up to ~105 is normal). The fan will normally come on when the car is idling and there's no airflow over the radiator, even when it's cold. Otherwise hard to help sorry, other than suggest electrical issues as above.

My car (Volvo C30 with this Duratec engine) heats up to 76C max (obd reader), I haven't seen any warmer. On the autobahn driving high speeds, the temperature goes down to like 60C something (it's about 5C outside now). The last couple of weeks the car heats up slowly and fuel economy has worsened. The temperature dial is in the middle when temp is 74C. (Probably always between 74and102 I guess). Seems to be the thermostat I guess?

Usually they fail open, which means engine takes a long time to heat up and generally won't go much above 80 deg C. (Monitor using dash diagnostics if you don't have an OBD2 scanner). Coolant is usually red or purple but color is not a reliable indicator of standard, you must check the relevant Ford spec is met and then the color is unimportant - see video on coolant change: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-loB5tDd4jow.html

Could be thermostat, could be other things, assume you've checked for coolant leaks - faulty water pump, blocked hoses or radiator. Feel heat around cooling system, finding a part that doesn't get hot while engine is too hot can point you in the right direction.

It's a heater to allow the ECU to open it by program. The later versions don't have it and have a slightly cooler open temp. If you use the wrong one on a car that expects the connection, you'll get an error code.

Love the Mk3 but not a massive fan of this engine. Thermostat breaks exactly like yours. And it is not cheap to replace. EGR gets bunged up and throws error codes. Again not cheap. Swirl flaps can munch the engine. One in the family had piston ring failure at about 80K miles. Shame as it was a nice car to drive.

my base model 08 focus is set up this way but much more accessible. i attempted this from the top without removing anything. the new thermostat housing was bigger and conflicted with my motor shape. i noticed a gap in between the new thermo and the motor. since i had a view from the top i knew what to shave. i shaved it with a grinder. (this was an auto zone part. BEWARE.) i screamed and cussed throughout the removal. because my pliers kept slipping off those fuckin hose clamps. but after spending a few days with them i realized they have a tab to hold it open. (very hard to manipulate from the top side). i was blood sweat and tears to the finish but it was my first one, so now i'm about to fire it up. if there's a leak, i'm gonna just ride a bicycle. i'm done with cars

also. i cut a pair of cheap pliers into short palm pliers to give me a big advantage..

Your motor is a Duratec HE? How do you access the stat with the power steering pump & fluid tank above it? You really need vise grips for the hose clips. I am doing a "redux" video on this thermostat in a week or two. Look out for it.

Very nice video. However the connector on the thermostat housing is not live while the ignition is off. So you dont have to the battery terminal off. Some people might not have their radio code available.

If the car has been driven with a failed thermostat it may be a good idea to reset the KAM as the fuel tune will be different when engine never running hot. But yes it's not necessary because of live circuits.

@@CraigsDIY True. Do you reset the KAM by just pulling the negative pole off though?

Just be careful before you buy thermostat, mine Mondeo 2005 is without sensor.

How do you stop over revving when taking off from lights or intersections when in gear. But not in gauge just now and again. Is this Clutch or motor problem. Email me at Ac Pro Jumpstart in Christchurch New Zealand. acprojumpstart@gmail.com It was left hand drive and has been changed for right hand for our country just a great car and though just brought it I am not familiar with this motor. No idea, classic problems could be vacuum leak or throttle position, or any number of other things. You will need to get codes and watch some closed loop data to get some ideas. I'm curious why you have a converted LHD, it's not like it's hard to find RHD Mondeos...?
