It's a fairly simple thing, but filling up a motorcycle tank is slightly different than filling up a car. If it's your first time, you may not even know where it is. In this video, I make a quick trip to the gas station to show you how to fuel your motorcycle.

Comments are a bit harsh. I'm a new rider. I wasn't sure how far to fill up the tank or if there are any specifics. So thank you. I learnt that from your video.

Something that's important is always keeping contact between the tip of the fueling nozzle and the metal rim of your gas can (don't free-pour it in), as it grounds your bike and will reduce the chance of a spark. Fast flowing gas through the hose generates static electricity.

Thank you, this is great. I filled up my bike for the first time the other day and I was so nervous. I've been driving a car half my life but something about filling my bike was intimidating. I didn't even get off my bike because I thought it would be best to keep the tank level when I filled it...I wasn't brave enough to go anywhere near the top either as it was clicking away at me almost straight away. So thank you for this video I'm sure there are lots of newbies who appreciate it :)

Thanks for that. As straightforward as it would seem, just wanted clarification as I'm thinking about getting my first bike, so that was very helpful. When I was over in the US, I liked the system over there where you pay before you fill in most places. There is so much fuel theft here in Australia due to the fact they let you fill before you pay.

One thing you actually missed out, if there are paper towels near the station you should wipe around your fuel cap just to make sure there's no splash back getting on your gear :P

I remember my first fill up... and it didn’t go well. I filled up like normal except if the fuel level passes the tip of the nozzle then it will stop you from filling any more, except I thought maybe it was broken and managed to bypass the overfilling mechanism by holding it just under half way. I was looking at the price, minding my own business before a stranger tapped me on the shoulder and pointed to the ground. About £5 worth of petrol was in a puddle on the floor. So yeah I learned from my mistakes. 😂

Hi there! Thanks for the video! I put the nuzzle in just as you would with a car and tried pumping gas the first time, and then wondered how much I could full up - if there was an indicator inside the tank or something - I was not sure with the expansion of the gas once its hot etc. This helped a lot! When I did my first fuel up last week I had a small problem. When I put the nossel at a certain angle, the trigger would just click and no petrol would come out. The trigger would click and touch with the frame. So I had to angle the nozzel more upright and I was in such an uncomfortable position because I used the only available pump which was on the right and my kickstand naturally is on the left so I had to lean the nozzel in a lot. Any tips? Or should I just not use a right-side pump?

I always tap the gas pump on the ground before putting it in, because there is usually always gas left over from the last person and it's just sitting there. Coincidentally when I was at chevron last time I tapped it on the ground without squeezing the pump and just a huge splash of gas came out before I even paid for anything. That would be a tip I would give to anybody. Great bike you have and safe riding bro!
@Protantagonist

So it's like an escort service. You pay the amount upfront, pull off her gas cap, put your nozzle in her fuel hole, start pumping the amount you desire for eg: if it's full tank,....pump till her brim, remove your nozzle from her hole when you're done, put on her gas cap & pray that you don't catch anything nor get her system in a jiffy 9 months later......thank you for this video!!! It was very informational! Now let me go pump some gas in some bike....

My CBR250R has a weird bar in the middle, my gas stations nearby don't start filling unless you pull back the "ring" thing, and I'm not sure if I can adjust the amount coming out with just a light press or heavy press. If only filling up was as easy as yours. I make it sound bad, but it's not terrible. I DID have a horrible time trying to figure out how to fill up the first time though haha.

I have been using the same motorcycle for over a year now, and I just got a new one. I took it for fuel because I wanted more in the tank. I stuck the nozzle in, and it clicked really fast, so I thought that was strange, and I took off. I only got 78 cents worth, and the gas indicator needle didn't move much. It seems this new tank is more complicated... I thought I knew how to pump gas, but I don't know now! Bah!... The tips you gave in your video will help me the next time I go to try to fill the new one up. Where I live, our gas pumps have little holes in a band a couple inches above the end, and I've never seen if those are breathing holes or if gas comes out of them... I don't want to leave them out and get gas everywhere, so I'll have to look down into the tank next time... Why can't everyone make their pumps the same?...

It depends. If you have an older bike like I do (84 Nighthawk) then the bike uses a carb not fuel injection. In Canada we have 10 or 15 percent Ethanol in our lower octane gases. These older bikes HATE ethanol. And you shouldn't use 93 or 94 octane either because it has an additive that can strip the lubricants inside of a bike engine.

@Twowheeleddevil

It’s a bad idea to let fuel dry on the outside of the bike as it can corrode the plastic’s, mess up your paint and just about anything on the bike. It happened to me when I bought my first bike it was a CBR300 I was 17 at the time only just got my motorcycle license and never used a gas pump. Although it wasn’t just a tiny splash I didn’t realise how quick it would fill the tank and it poured down the sides of my bike. Not to worry I’ve ridden dirt bikes my whole life and have done the exact same thing but I was a bit more concerned since the bike I put countless hours of work into for the money was now covered in fuel. Where I live you pay for the fuel in a shop next to the pump’s. I just bought a bottle of water along with the fuel and used it to rinse off my tank and the seat

@CTingleyful
@CTingleyful 10 лет назад
It really depends on the bike. Follow whatever your manual says, if you don't have one look it up online. Higher octane does nothing to increase power or fuel efficiency, but it's not really going to hurt it. I go with the low octane, because that's what my manual says.

This is the usual way to fill up. My CBR has a bar just inside the tank that prevents the nozzle from being pushed down into the tank. In either case, fill slowly to all for the max gas to be pumped in and avoid splashing

Only positives I see is better gas and more fun, but seems pretty dangerous no matter how safe of a driver you are, there are a lot of unsafe drivers on the road. I had a blast on the bike though.

One problem some noobs run into when filling up is that some gas nozzles are only activated when pushed inside a tank... there is a plastic thing around the nozzle that you have to push back with your hand to allow it to flow, otherwise it won't work.

@Motonosity that was my bad, I meant for most super sport bikes. But I guess it's just preference

This might have been said earlier - I haven't gone through all the comments. But it is important not to fill the tank up right to the top as in this example. It is ok if it's cold, but when the temps are hot (the weather not the bike) putting cold fuel into a tank right to the top doesn't leave any room for expansion. Nothing much will come of this hopefully, but it will mean that you will lose fuel when it expands as it warms up, through the breather tube.

VERY informative - was hoping you could do a follow up vid on how to twist the throttle or turn the ignition key - both as confusing as filling up a gas tank, thanks!!

I usually sit on the bike and keep it straight up. So the tank's also level and then fill her up. Otherwise you will not fill her as close to the top. Sometimes I will shake the bike to the left and right to let some air out.
