I'm a kinesiologist who likes to do tennis research, and your videos are so scientifcally accurate that in my opinion it makes learning and training more intuitive. With evidence on your side, it's easier to apply fundamentals on the tennis court. Keep up the outstanding job you're doing!
You know how sometimes people have been saying something to you your whole life and it just doesn't reach you, and then suddenly somebody comes along and says the same thing, but in a way that immediately makes sense to you and you get it? This was that video for me! I have been making slow motion videos of the pros for a while now and was wondering how they got their racket back so far behind them on their serve, but when he showed the baseball pitcher's motion, and connected it to the serve, I had an epiphany! Great video. Great explanations
Most surprising is how virtually none of the 3 coaches I've had have ever explained this significant difference and advantageous method that pro's use. I've learnt so much more through videos such as yours. Understanding the arm position on raising it, the 'drop' and pull in a kinetic chain momententum is key for power and speed. Great video.
Tennis coach here... to everybody reading and watching this video and for what little is worth, I totally endorse the full content of it. It is beautifully explained and the science behind it is solid. While accuracy and power for the serve come from different places as well (from the ball toss to the leg work, for instance), the three main points of the video are undeniable. I always tell my students that the irony of this sport is that the most complextmovement in tennis is the only one where you throw the ball yourself! Very well done, you found yourselves a new sub.
@@harryherman5371 if you feel like you muscle it, it's probably something you'll feel regardless of effort level. I'd bet it has something to do with the movement itself that has some room for improvement. Be sure you reach trophy position and follow up through the motion fluently. Specifically check your shoulders (your left shoulder should be higher than the left one at toss and the opposite at hit) and reach high with your arm and body, as if you would like to hit the ball with your forehead.
Awesome video. I love how you explain the technical details so thoroughly. The power and inconsistency in my serve has always fluctuated. After watching this video, I hit one practice session then played a match the next day where I was 70-80% on my first serve, and they almost never came back. For context, I've probably been playing at 40-60% first serve % this year, sometimes while losing power. This video as well as the "Perfect Tennis Serve Contact Point and How to Find It" helped me understand the serve so much better and simplified my approach. I also love the PhD level explanations sprinkled in with an occasional Beavis and Butthead laugh. It's endearing, keeps it light and funny.
Thank you for the kind words and for sharing your experience Aaron! I'm doing a happy dance right now, hahaha. Let me know if there's any topics you'd like us to cover next! - Daytri
As a fellow Lefty I really enjoy your instruction. Not only is it informative but your personality makes it fun to watch . Looking forward to your next video
Great video. I wish you add more of those slow motion videos. Your demonstrations as you explain the concept is more like flexing. Racquet flexing, if I may.
This is beautiful! Thank you guys for doing this - really conceptual aspects explained and demonstrated in understandable way! Also, that wrist joke was a pearl, I laughed for 2 minutes!! Will appreciate the wrist roll on forehand, I can't create enough acceleration, obviously some kinetic gap happens... IMHO must be similar to snap & pronation on serve.
During the pandemic our family started playing tennis as the major form of exercise....I have been watching a ton of videos....and I must say your videos are some of the most helpful....I also am amazed at how fast you guys serve....it's clear you can teach and you can do it as well....keep up the good work!
Yo, I’ve been checking ya’ll out for a minute. This is one of the 3% of correct information on the Internet for technique. Keep up the good work. Also this was the best video, just based on presentation and joking/personality, it shows more of you both. That dope, keep teaching the truth 💪🏾
This is the best video serve ever. After years I was missing the leverage concept which is the main one for serve power. You guys rock🤘 and your serve looked atomic 💥
Yeah, he is able to swing his arm REALLY fast. That makes the serve so much better. One of the issues I have on my serve is not being able to swing my arm very fast; which means my serves don’t get as much pace on them
Hi, DMan! Here is a video we've recently created on the serve toss: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CWEdccTar68.html More videos on the serve toss will be coming soon. Stay tuned!
nice, i thought the pro drop, was taking the hat off the head or scratch the back as I got taught, but its really rotating the torso and driving the legs, which forces the racquet head to drop. wow
i like your explaination but somehow i feel i need more precise example. like checkpoints. cause if the technique is wrong i could down for a passive injury in the long run . but i love your contentN
Hi Ed! Thanks for the kind words and feedback. We will certainly try to include more checkpoints to make sure players don't use these techniques the wrong way.
Your production quality was always great, but now you have managed to find another level. Impressive video man, thanks a lot for this. 3:37 got me tho 😂
Where have you been all of my life? 😂 But I need a right handed tutorial. 😂 Maybe next video? 😊 I smashed the like button and subscribed. Now my thumb is broken.
Excellent video. Everything very well explained. One observation/question please. When you have the racket rotated to the outside behind your back, everything else beyond that point goes very quickly and pronation and how the racket hits the ball is not as clearly shown. You did explain it nicely but you do not show it with your racket at slow space while talking to it. Instead you always just finish the serve at max speed which makes it hard to follow. I know I can slow video down but voice will not be fluid along with that. Please consider.
Thank you for the kind words and feedback, Muhannad! We're making a full video on the Serve Pronation and will keep the slower demonstrations in mind. - Daytri & RacquetFlex
Great Stuff. Quick question...Is the energy generated from the back hip to the torso and being unleashed through the arm and and then wrist? Should our focus be on the back hip and torso unloading which will drive the arm?
Great question Christopher! The back leg and hip are going to help you in rotating your torso and hitting arm forward to contact. But there are 2 problems that you might find with just focusing on the back hip rotation: 1. Over-rotation: If you only focus on the hip rotation into the net, you neglect the other methods players use to generate force on the serve. As a result, you may rotate your hip and trunk to the net too much. 2. Forward Weight Transfer: If you think "push from the back leg," you'll end up putting too much weight on the back leg prior to your leg drive. Top pros will shift most of their weight on to their front leg as they load. And naturally, this means the front leg doing more of the "pushing work" during the leg drive. We'll cover this in much more depth in next weeks video on the Serve Leg Drive. I hope that helps! - Daytri
Hi Guys great video. I have a strong serve now thanks to your amazing video on backswings but one MAJOR issue - a floating elbow. Basically before I get into pre throw, my elbow floats around in all the wrong places. Ive noticed all the pros have an elbow that stays pretty much in the same position, or just slots back with minimal movement. Is there a good drill to stop the hitting arm flying around erratically before 'trophy'?
Wow, thank you guys! After the first day I can say - it really works. I feel my serve can be so much more powerful and the main thing - I spend so much less energy for it
I've never done tennis in my life. I signed myself up to a 6 week tennis session starting next week. Thank you for this as it will help kick start my practice.
So a question about getting into the pre throw position. Are you extending up and front and then bending elbow? In all the serves you do sometimes the racket is up sometimes its down im not sure how to get into the pre throw in a fluid way?!
You don’t just place your arm in that position and expect to get that kind of easy power. Practice relaxing your entire arm and then purposefully isolate and lift up your entire arm ONLY using your shoulder muscle to get into that throwing position. You should feel tension like your arm being is “cocked and loaded”, that’s how you focus-in all that energy and then release it. With enough practice and arm warm-ups (plus a good toss and a well-timed swing) you can serve at high speeds with ease.
Are these all flat serves? I notice the pronation on the wrist sends the ball straight down the court. However, my coach teaches my not to pronate so much, which generates some speed spin.
Effortless swings! All you three have the same exact beautiful smooth swing with so much power! How can I do that? Can you film you guys' serves from different angles with slow motion and upload them ?
Great video & technique, however I have a rotor cuff problem so the 90° degree position is out! Can you tell me how I can get my hair as full as your playing partner?😂
Hi Hollister! Thanks for bringing that up. If you have any issues with getting full external rotation to create a deep racquet drop, you can still execute a very effective serve by driving your elbow up and forward through flexion and horizontal shoulder adduction. It will bemore shallow, but it's the speed of execution that counts!
Disagree. These type of motion is only essential for creating certain type of spins. Effortlessness come from the transfer of power from the low body to upper. You want to transfer your body weight through contact. The arms swing is really a guiding/placement factor for the ball. Using the arms for power is extremely limited for generating your full potential of power. Once you over focus on your arm, it becomes more stiff; hence, you will hinder your body weight from being transfer to the ball.
Thanks for the nice video! I follow the same technic, but my more than 50% time my servers are long. What can I do to prevent that from getting long? Please...
Good video. Have you thought about flipping the entire video during editing. You are a lefty, but most people are not. Flipping the video would perhaps make it even easier to understand. Apologies if I'm saying something silly.
Note that in the slomo videos, the racket pivots upwards out of its "on edge" position towards contact, like a catapult, whereas when he demonstrates in real time, he has a much smaller angle between racket and forearm, and he pivots the racket a lot more sideways out of its on edge position, with the racket swinging open ike a door. Don't pivot the racket sideways like a door swinging open. That really screws up your swing and hurts your ahoulder, your arm going one way and the racket going another.
Are you serving as both a leftie and a righty? I kind of blew out my right shoulder and I’m trying to play left handed these days. Just subscribed too!
Don't get why you have to break down shoulder flexion and should horizontal abduction like they are 2 separate set of movements that are to be done separately
I tried many many videos on the tennis serve, but this one was outstanding to show results in my serve. I shared it to my friend and he said it improved 20 mph to his serve. Thank you very much!!
Hi Sreedhar, we are so amazing and happy to hear that your friend has started to see progress on his serve! Tell him to keep up the great work 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Not sure if you guys do this on purpose or what but you never tell your audience what type of serve you are doing it looks like a flat serve is this correct?

Thanks to you guys, I have been working on my serve all summer. I watched you video last night (less than 24hrs ago) Went out and did what you guys were talking about, SWOOSH. All I was saying was lamboginee. Because of your video , you guys just like added like so much power to my serve. I dare say it, you guys being dark like me make me so proud. You guys are amongst the best technical coaches. Now this is my advice to yous, keep it up and keep sharing, above all stay fit and stay safe from injuries. Ps Ive pressed like.
