I am trying to break into a Data Analyst role aswell as the next part of my career. Thanks for your tip about doing projects to combat lack of work experience in the field. Definetly deserve a sub for the good info and content.
Thanks bud, I appreciate the kind words. Here is a blog post that you might find helpful during your search : raneshguruparan.com/howIgot8internshipoffers.html Sometime this summer I will be posting a new video talking about my search for a full-time position so hopefully that will be helpful too!
Congratulations man! I am going through this process right now too. However, I just want say that it's insane how much we have to do to get a single internship which most of the times is not even enough to cover all our expenses
Thanks! I 100% agree, especially in this job market. I made an updated video that is more detailed. Hope this helps! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BDepj5WFkas.html
thanks for this... I am planning to do the same! I am doing a MSc in AI online, and know they will prefer someone from a proper' uni, so I know I need to really know what I'm talking about!
i really like your video please share more experience and tips to crack interviews and ya please share the roadmap of learning data science with detail explination

Thanks man, this was very helpful. I am a rising sophomore in college, and it's about time I start applying for internships. I am trying to expand my experience and knowledge, so I am looking to work anything in Data Science, Data Analytics, SWE, etc. So this advice was much needed!
Hope it helped! If you’re looking for another video to help inform you about these fields a little more, here’s one I think you might like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gKPCqWCyekY.html
Appreciate this a lot bro❤.It really answered some questions on my mind. I'm a student in college majoring in Electrical Engineering and would love to build up a skill in data analysis.I have been researching about data analytics for about some month now and it's been on and off. I really would like if u could give an insight on where to start and what data tools you used to build this skill and also projects I could do to aid my learning.

Great video Ranesh! Also, it would be very helpful if you could share about how did you made your portfolio website. It looks super simple yet contains all the required information. Looking forward to your response.
I made the part 1 video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fwiDdgVxaNE.html Recording the part 2 where I go into how to code, layout & host your portfolio. Should be out within a week so stay tuned
Thank you for the kind words. Im glad it brought you some value. To answer your question, I mainly used websites like LinkedIn, Handshake, Indeed and Glassdoor. LinkedIn was my primary and there is a feature called “Easy Apply” which basically makes the application process 10x faster (
Currently I am a highschool student looking to go into data science. I am just starting to learn python for data science, but I wanted to ask what constitutes as a project and how I should go about expanding my skills?
Amazing to hear that you are interested in the field. A project can range from something as small as analyzing your finance/budget sheet to something as complex as building a complex model using historical data to predict customer churn for a company. The goal of the projects are just to enhance your skills so as long as you are doing that each time then you're set. I have a 5 minute project series which introduces basic projects for data analytics/science on Kaggle. I will leave some helpful links here if you are interested. By sending so many applications, did you individualize your cover letter? If yes, how did you do that, because it probably would get annoying after 10 applications.
Amazing question. For my first 100ish applications I did not send any cover letters except the ones that required one. After that I wanted to increase my chances so I used chatGPT to deliver cover letters based on specific job descriptions and my resume. However, I do think it is important to note that I have spoken to over 5 recruiters and HR staff that do recruiting regularly and they have noted that cover letters are not as important. Most of the time they don't look at them unless there is something they want to know that isn't on your resume (that itself is bad). I would say if you have the time, definitely do cover letters but I would focus my attention on applying for more jobs!
I am a data science student from India (Kolkata). I have honed myself with skills in Python, SQL, statistical modeling, and visualization using power bi. Is there something more that needs to be added to my skill set? Apart from these, I have made 2 projects as well. I am in my 2nd month of searching for an internship, so I kind of resonated with your experiences. Thank you
Hey, looks like you have impressive skills. Its hard for me to analyze your situation without knowing more information. However, here is my advice: If you are finding it difficult to get interviews/phone screens then it might be beneficial for you to redo your resume. I recommend following a working format and I have provided some resources in the video description that should help with that. If you are successful securing interviews but aren’t hearing back after, I recommend recording one of your interviews so you can analyze what you could improve. Are you presenting yourself well enough? Are you answering their questions using terms, keywords or buzzwords? In general are you selling yourself well enough. If you already passed the interview stage and have offers then let me he the first to wish you congratulations! I recommend you take the time to make your decision and list out what you’re looking for from this internship. Overall, based on my experience your skillset and mine when I was applying are very similar. I think doing more projects or even making a portfolio. I made a few videos and blog posts on these topics so you might find it helpful to check those out. Also, feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn, maybe I will be able to reach out to my network and help you out. I want to emphasize that i'm not an expert, I can only share my knowledge from my experience. I think you’re on the right path though! All the best!
hey man, thank you so much for sharing. I have 2 more questions and I hope you can answer them: 1.for data science internships in general, do we need to know the maths formula derivation / theory for the ml algorithms? 2.when it comes to personal projects, can I code along with some guided tutorials on RU-vid and make some changes to it and then consider it as my personal project? many thanks in advnace
Hey, thank you for the kind words. To answer your first question, unless you are proving stuff I have not needed to fully memorize formula derivation. Understanding is important especially for application since you need to know what algorithm is best used where, limitations, how to optimize etc. I highly recommend learning by 'copying' or doing guided projects. I think it's the best way to learn, you can remove the guidance as you go and expand from there! Also, here's the updated Internship guide video if you're interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xVoUjx2pC4M.html
hey bro, thank you very much for your timely reply! just to clarify things a bit--so for my first question, it's more important to understand and know how to apply the ML algorithms rather than the maths theory behind it. And for the second question, is it ok for me to code along with a guided project on let's say table tennis, and then after that, I can 'mimic' / use the same workflow but apply that to a different dataset of my own interest. In this case, can I put it in my resume as my personal projects? @@raneshguruparan
Anytime! 1. I find that if you have enough knowledge to apply these algorithms that's enough. The math theory behind it is helpful when explaining. 2. 100%, as long as you are comfortable talking about the projects during interviews or to employers. You would need to clearly understand and communicate the workflow.
Hello Ranesh, You encouraged to start applying for internships very early can you suggest some sites you used? Glassdoor and Indeed dont state very many so how were you able to find more to apply for about 10 - 20 a day. Using your "data" "intern" method. Thank you
Hey Keon, looks like a lot of people have this question so I will make a video demonstrating how. Short answer is my primary tools were LinkedIn and Handshake. To my knowledge, LinkedIn is the biggest tool out there that can help you get a job. I set up filters to notify me when a new posting came out from a specific company or for a specific role. Handshake is an app that is similar to LinkedIn but I believe is more niched. Not everyone can have access to it (if im not wrong). It requires a student email account. I found some success on Handshake but most of my success was through LinkedIn. Highly recommend you checking them out!
Yes and no. It depends on the company. I can say that most companies usually require you to have at least one more semester in school after the internship ends
I am very appreciate for what you did. I am in the stress of job searching too. Can you share me what they asked you during the interview. Did they ask you much about data structures and algorithms? Thanks
Hey, it fluctuated a lot based on the company. I had companies grill me in 2 hour long panel interviews with 6 interviewers and other companies who focused on behavioral questions and used my portfolio to verify my skills. Overall, yes there were some linear & non-linear data structures questions, but the focus was more on machine learning models and cases or merges, joins, data cleaning technique, data visualizations, etc. I am working on a video right now that goes in depth on my interview experience. I will update this comment with a link once it's ready. Hope this helped in the meantime!
I am in my 4th sem of b-tech. And goin to start the data science journey.... I have the road map... but the thing that I want from you is .... a sort of advice that motivates me when I fail or depressed in my journey..... thanks and please reply
You might not like this advice but it's not going to be easy. You are going to fail a lot, face a lot, of rejections, make a lot of mistakes, get frustrated and upset but every failure, every mistake, every line of code and question you ask will get you one step closer to where you want to be. You can never really fail if you don't give up so stay resilient and persistent and I am confident you will get there!
Hey, I mainly used LinkedIn, Handshake, Glassdoor, and Indeed to apply. I had 1 referral from a friend but the bulk of my applications were just mass scale.
Soo much grateful that you shared your journey with us! Just a small doubt, how did you applied to 300-400 companies? From which site? Linkedin? How did you search internships? Can you make a video on this at the earliest? Like can you share all the tips you did to search for internships? Thanks in advance!
Hey Pritam, I will do my best to answer your questions here but I also have a blog post that covers the topic pretty well. Here is the link to that blog post: raneshguruparan.com/howIgot8internshipoffers.html I primarily used LinkedIn and Handshake to apply for jobs at the time. I used filters to target data science intern or data analytics intern. I turned on LinkedIn notifications on my phone so I would be able to get notified when new postings where out. Also, typically when you apply to a specific company and you have access to their career portal, you are able to see other postings they have. If I liked the company, I would look other similar positions i.e Data Engineering, Data Science, or Business Insights interns. This is the approach I took for a more broad application process. At the time a lot of companies were rejecting or closing positions due to so many tech lay offs. Because of this, my mindset shifted to just apply for as many positions as possible just in case a few fall short. Hopefully I was able to answer your questions. Also, thank you for the video idea, I will be starting the process of looking for a full-time position soon so I will use that as an opportunity to share my experience.
if you have confidence and are set on that industry then go for it. If you have that confidence you will most likely have some unfair advantages and knowledge about that domain that will make you stand out. I recommend focusing on that niched industry but if you happen to run out of openings within that niche, go ahead and broaden your scope. All the best bud!
@@raneshguruparan Thank you Ranesh for the help. I am an industrial management student which can focus on supply chain topics. I have become interested in data concepts and would be interested in a role combining these interests. I am subscribed to utilize the knowledge that you share with the internet.
Appreciate it man. That domain knowledge definitely helps especially if you can use it to your advantage and leverage it during your interviews. All the best!
Hi Ranesh, I was dropped out my degree, now i am pursuing BCA in Data science along with that I am learning Data science with ML in Boston institute of analytics. Can I get a job only by my knowledge without degree
I cant guarantee anything but I know several people who managed to secure high level jobs in the field without a bachelors. I think it’s becoming more and more common but there are still many companies with that degree requirement. Within my company itself we have a few employees who don’t have degrees. Some have taken bootcamps and others went through the self-learn route and proved themselves. It’s not going to be easy but I think it is doable!
@@raneshguruparan TQSM for your reply bro, my dropout was in 2019 which is my 1st year. Later I went to US healthcare industry Revenue cycle management. Now I am working. i wanted to become an data analytics within this year. So I am pursuing BCA in DS and also studying Data science with ML in organized Academy. I will get my degree in mid of 2025.
Depends on the position and company. I often see technical questions come up in the second round but I have rarely seen live coding questions. I would still be prepared for anything though
Hii Ranesh, The video is really helpful. I wanted to know how should I prepare for data analyst intern interview after receiving a phone screen. What technical skills should I focus on? And also is DSA important?
Hey bud, thank you for the kind words. I think this video will give you detailed steps on what to do next ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xVoUjx2pC4M.htmlsi=XB-QBq6dSl6GdOXl Data Structures and Algorithms is important but not needed as much in a data analytics role
Thanks for sharing your honest experience. Here is a quick query if you can just share some suggestions. I have been applying since a month 5-10 internships/entry level jobs per day but the companies aren't even taking me to interview step and i don't know if i have applying in a correct way, i have been applying from LinkedIn, naukri and other job portals can you please help me with some suggestions on this?
Hey bud, I have gotten a lot of questions like this. What I would do if I were in your shoes is I would look at my resume and maybe push it through a website like Jobscan.co to see if it can pass an ATS scan. You will want to target a score of 90% or higher. I would also consider building a web portfolio to boost your chances. Once you've done that then I would start applying again. Hello I am student of artificial intelligence and data science engineering Currently I am in third year I am continuously searching for the internship but I am not getting anything Can you ple guide me for it?
Hey, that's a really cool field. I want to mention that I am not an expert and all I can do is share my experience and advice that I learned based on my mistakes. To answer your question, I would need more context so I can better assist you. Are you getting stuck at the application phase? Is your resume not getting you through the door? Are you getting interviews? Are you getting second interviews, etc.. I posted a blog post on this topic and I think it is pretty comprehensive in what I would do if I were to start over again. Here is the link to that post: raneshguruparan.com/
did they asked dsa problems in interview or just data science problems in the interview like in this way round1-dsa round2-dsa round3-datas based problems or in what way the interview happened this is my longtime doubt ply reply?
Yes, they usually split the interview into sections. I had some panel interviews where it was 2 hours long and we went through technical portions there but I also had companies interview me 3 times where the first interview is behavioral, the second is technical, the third is application within the company/meet the team. Usually for internships they won't invest too much time in vetting the candidates but for bigger companies like Apple/Google/Microsoft they definitely will. In fact, my brother recently went through the interview process with a very big company for a software engineering position and there were several rounds. I will post a video soon on how the interviews went to me, how I answered the questions and what you can expect.
Yes it does. These days there are a lot of remote internships but it depends on your major. I recommend looking at LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Indeed and check the descriptions of the job postings. Usually they mention if the position will require a remote, hybrid or onsite environment. Hope this helps :)
I built it using a HTML5 template and made a tutorial on how you can build the same portfolio for free in under 10 mins :ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xsz_C_ILeYs.htmlsi=XLHJikd1meeqGf2Y

Hey bud, that depends on the location you’re trying to land the role. If its in a primary English speaking country, then I would say yes, but if you’re working abroad or for a big international company, they might value your multilingual skills more. I still recommend learning/improving your english skills as it can come in handy!
Hey Avec, As mentioned in the video, I believe doing projects is the best way to gain experience if you can't secure a job. There are a bunch of resources out there that you can use to do your personal project. I recommend Kaggle, RU-vid, & Coursera. Hey bud, i'm not that equipped to talk about that topic but my brother is on that journey right now and he found "Coding with Lewis" to be a good resource. Here is the channel link: www.youtube.com/@CodingWithLewis
These days there are a ton of up and coming data science degrees. However, I don’t think they are at that level where they cover all the skills needed to succeed in the field. I believe you would benefit more from getting a computer science degree and specialising in Data Science via a masters or through certifications/internships.
Great question, I applied while doing these projects. Obviously my success rate was higher after having them on my resume but I figured why not apply to a few of the thousands of data jobs being posted everyday.
