To all those e-mailing me with questions, I really don't mind but I would suggest you download this e book. It should answer ANY and ALL question you have about yachting. I contacted them to try get it cheaper for you guys. if you use the promo code "JARED" you'll get 5$ off making it $20 from $25. This e book will then become your Go To Guide!!! Link below
crewcompassapp.com/product/ya...
Hey Guys! This video is not what I usually post but have had a handful of people ask me to get into what it is that I do that allows me to visit all these epic places and work on a Yacht. This video is NOT designed to tell you its the best job in the world but rather to show you both sides (Good and Bad) and help those who are interested get involved!
Currently I work on a 34m (112 ft) yacht as Deck/Mate and have previous experience working on a 203ft Feadship as well as a 82ft Expedition Catamaran, so my experience is quite diverse.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS! Please post below and I will get to them asap!
WHAT "HOW TO's" DO YOU WANT TO SEE?
- How to anchor?
- How to tie knots?
- How to wash down?
- How to get a job?
ETC
LET ME KNOW BELOW!! :D
If you are an experienced crew member PLEASE tell me what I have missed and feel free to post below and I will PIN to top!
HOPE THIS VIDEO HELPS SOME!

Hi Jared, I'm about to do all my courses and eventually head out to either Antibes or Palma. My question is, when dockwalking, what is the best way to approach a yacht or someone who is already on board? Do you just plain and simply ask them if there are job vacancies available or should you get a conversation going first? What is the best way of starting a conversation? Thank you!
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 лет назад
Hi Antoine - People buy people, all yacht crew can spot a dockworker a million miles away, so they know exactly what you are about to ask. My advice to you would be to be different and be yourself. I would suggest if you see crew doing something while working on the boat that you are unsure of, ask them. "Hi there sorry to bother you, I'm sure you can tell I'm fairly new and was just wondering how you / or what you busy with and how often you do it" etc etc or if a boat is docking, ask if you can be of any assistance etc. The reason I say this is 90% of the time, boats DONT need your help but at the same time you are duckwalking to learn, this way even though the boat may not need you, at least you are learning a thing or two and they can see you are eager to learn. 10 quality conversations are way better than 100 "hi do you need a new crew member" conversations, that being said there are a lot of boats so don't waste your time and get going. I would SERIOUSLY suggest buying the e book in the BIO above. It will help you with so much its 20$ with the "JARED" coupon code, in the scheme of things, its pennies, just grab it and keep it as your GoTo guide. All the best!

Hi Antoine, I've been in the industry for several years now. The best way to Dockwalk is to be smartly dressed and hit the docks early (ready for the 8am start) and kindly ask to speak to the Chief Officer or Chief Stewardess about any vacancies etc. If they're not available, leave you're CV with the crew and ask them to pass it on. If you manage to get any 'Daywork' always ask for a written reference which will help build your credibility for the next opportunity. You should be paid anywhere between 100 to 120 euros per day (don't work for free whatever you do!) If you're looking for a jobs board to get an overview of positions currently available within the industry then www.yotspot.com is pretty good...Best of luck!

Really good video, thank you! I was in St Martin taking a bartender course in feb 2017, and of course I met lots of people from the yacht industry there. When I came home to Sweden I started working at a cruise ship and then I've been busy studying. I am starting to feel more curious about yachting and I might want to finish my STCW and go work on yachts this spring. Do you have any recommendations or advices and when does the season start in Europe?

Every boat size is different. For example a 70m boat, the officer will likely never be cleaning on deck but on my boat which is 34m all crew do a mix of jobs. Yes i rotate with the caption for watches but I also do the majority of deck work.

Excellent and informative. I have 2 yachts which are locating to Australia from Europe. the industry in Australia is growing because of Asian clients. 6 hours from china or japan to Cairns , is much more preferable than 16 or 20 hours to Europe and the Caribbean. the other point my clients have told me is the water and surroundings are pristine compared to other locations. my suggestion is for intending staff to have a look in Australia.

Hi Mikey, I am yet to join the industry but am strongly considering it. I am Australian (from Sydney) and would love to gain some experience on home soil (or waters) before heading off to find work in the European or US. ports. Are there many docks in Australia in which I could start in? I wasn't aware there was much of a yachting industry in Aus. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Shot for all that info Jared, can definitely see that you've been doing this for a while. Question.. I want to go back into the Super Yacht Industry again, I'd like to get on a vessel that does a lot of Fishing/Spearfishing.. I don't know where to start looking or where to even find these vessels.. I was in Antibes in 2014, literally sold my bakkie and even got a bit of financial help from my parents only to go all that way to end up coming home dead broke. I never expected work to be so scarce there and thankfully, at least by grace and help from the crewhouse owners, got a few days day work. Still not enough to come home with anything. Im sure there are plenty of people our there with similar experiences and maybe even worse. So it's practically 6 years later, I don't feel passionate about the life I'm living and i want to get on a boat with a crew who are just as passionate about the ocean as i am. Where do i start looking? I can't go all the way there again right now unless i know for a fact that there is at least a 3 month job available and secured. How do i find these kinds of Vessels with that kind of crew and activities? Also, I've done some time in the Military now, will that have a positive effect on my CV that it won't just get thrown away or? Hope to hear from you, thanks again

I have been speaking with a few of my friends who are into fishing, so I am thinking to go out with them a few weekends on fishing boats to build experience and then start applying, on the other hand I did see a course for about £3000, but like you said it’s not what’s on your paper it’s how capable you are to do the job, would really appreciate if you could get back to me some time! Keep doing what you’re doing, really inspiring!

Hi Jared, great videos! Direct and useful My question is, as a 50 yr old with just previous experience as a skipper for leisure criuses and some regattas in the MED so obviously needeing some more know how; after obtaining my STCW and something more, in your opinion can I found a job on a superyacht as a deckhand or the age will be a hurdle? Used to work rolling sleeves up dou you suggest the "jump", following the dream or not?
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 лет назад
Tough question. I think starting as a deck hand wouldnt be the case for you, I would rather suggest obtaining some good skipper licences and jump up a few levels. Reason for saying that. Younger crew may find it uneasy to tell an older gentleman what to do on deck. If you have loads of boat experience I would say get your tickets under you if you insist on pursuing it. My last major suggestion is to mail a crew agent and ask them as they place crew and will have a much better idea. All the best

I know a lot of time a job landed is purely luck of the draw and timing may not be that much of an issue, but do you have a rough guideline? Also, would you recommend Palma or Antibes? Hi Guys. There is no one fixed time. Some go EARLY like March to beat the crowds but that can backfire because if the season is late (meaning boats come over from USA late) then your 90 days visa time can run out before the boats even get there. Some go late like May so that once a heap of peoples visas run out then they left for the picking and most go like mid April to be in between both but then you’ll be contending with others. So if you a hustler than Perfect or if you don’t have visa issues or an eu passport then that’s likely the right time. By June, boats are usually crewed and the season underway

Your previous experience will definitely help you. Best to do your yachting courses in Palma Mallorca or Antibes and look for work from there. Full guide coming soon

At your age I was chasing hardcover books on oceanic engineering specifically. I share your love for engineering... and learned at a very young age that I could combine my love of the sea with my love for engineering. But you have an advantage these days... Now you have the internet at your fingertips and it’s a huge advantage for you. Look into everything it details and also ensure you are ok with some of the things you’ll need to also learn along the way. It’s a difficult, competitive, amd risky business to get into... but the rewards can be amazing. Don’t give up on your dreams! Best wishes friend.

I got a AV/IT question since there are 0 videos about this position.. I wonder how much Yacht tech a person needs to have in order to work on a yacht with 3:1 rotation I worked.. 12 year's as Carpenter in Sweden (Survey the ground and start digging it to raise the walls my self, and place the last rooftile, got to the rank of construction engineer since I overthink about saftey) Collage: IT- Network and Security (Communications expert) but only worked with that knowledge last 2 years as a installer for Crestron,Cisco,MicroTik and many more companies that want someone who is honest to install their systems in Banks, Investment firms, Insurance companies and so on due to my IT knowledge. And ofc I am a handyman and love to find practical solutions. My question is if I only need a regular Yacht courses done or do I need also to have some sort of AV/IT Yachting course also done? I have many courses on my linkedin already covered and certified with also most common programing languages also (Got bored and had a few beers so I learned more programing)

Is the STCW the equivalent of IMO60? And what would be your personal opinion of hiring someone who has worked as a deckhand in the navy?
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 лет назад
I dont think so. the STCW is an MCA course and is required by all yachts. Cant get away from it unfortunately. Any sea experience is extremely valuable, youll be hired quickly i think.

Hey Jared So that video was really insightful but I have a few questions for the next Video, regarding those who wish to do this more as a break ( as you recommend this is a lot easier and obviously cheaper than finding a paid yatch trip) what courses exactly would you recommend someone like me does? Seeing as I don't want a career to this but more use it as a means to travel, explore and have an adventure! Also approximately how much time off do you get?
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 лет назад
Hey Veshalin. Thanks for the comment. I have never really looked into it from just a getaway point of view but you'll need to still do your STCW course and probably a powerboat licence allowing you to drive the smaller boats. I would start finding boats that do the kind of trip you are after and start getting in touch telling them what you are looking to do. Every boat has their own itinerary so i really cannot comment on time off. Sorry about that my friend!

I'm a South African. My girlfriend any myself are considering this as we are struggling to find work in S.A. with degrees. What are our chances of finding jobs as a deckhand and stewardess as couple on the same boat. Do you have any tips that would help in finding work together?

Hi Jared, does working in yacht have height requirement?
@rjdavid3
@rjdavid3 6 лет назад
Unusual question. I've noticed in yachting videos that crew do not wear shoes; just go barefoot while working. Why no shoes? Thanks.
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 6 лет назад
Robert Davidson - Hi Robert. It usually depends on how strict the captain / management are. Smaller boats are usually more relaxed. The reason is when you arrive to any boat, your shoes need to be taken off because of the wooden teak decks. Any stones or high heels etc will damage the untreated wood, so barefoot is usually best. Bigger yachts or more strict yachts will have dedicated shoes only for being inside or on deck. In my case it was up to me if I wanted deck shoes then it’s fine otherwise bare feet was accepted as well.
