Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
This is the followup to my series on how to do a frankenstrat paint job with spray cans. In this video I demonstrate how to get a professional looking finish using spray cans. I'm using a catalyzed polyurethane clear coat for this paint job. This is an automotive clear coat, that allows you to get a mirror shine for a clear that looks like glass. This stuff works on guitars, cars, helmets, bikes, etc.
Here is a kit page I set up with most of what you will need if you want to be able to get a beautiful finish with spray cans in either polyurethane or lacquer: kit.com/bradan...
Don't forget to ask your questions in the comment section.

Spray Max 2k lacquer is a good, proper activated finish, goes on well, produces an excellent finish. I've used them to spray plastic car bumpers, no issues, no cracking either, and remains slightly flexible. The best spray can 2k finish I've found. Makes like 'HB 2k' are crap, they aren't a 2k finish from a can, they are a crap 1k, trades description breach. Use a proper respirator/mask, at least a Gerson type disposable. For small jobs I highly recommend Spray Max. Over the years, I've converted to proper compressor and spray gun.

Hi Lou. It’s up to you how many coats you use, but it’s really easy to sand through 2 coats when you go to polish. Most people do more. With Mohawk you need to give it at least a week or two before sanding and polishing, but for most nitro a month is recommended.

Wrinkles? There shouldn't be wrinkles in the shielding unless you want them there. If you can't avoid them, you could rub a pool ball or something over it and that would knock them flat. Or the ball end of a ball peen hammer. Anything hard and rounded. If you actaully want the wrinkles for the visual look, you should consider copper leaf. Check out the Crimson Guitars video on it. I'm just not sure from what you said if you want wrinkles or not. OR...are you just covering your pick guard with shielding tape to actually shield it? If so...it goes on the BACK side of the pick guard!!! :P

Krylon also makes a clear you can use over that. I wouldn’t necessarily bother putting an expensive 2k clear over a cheap self etching plastic paint when it’s hard to say how long that first layer will stay bonded.

It's a great finish. I'm one of these guys that has been doing rattle can finishes for decades. I'm living in japan at present and one of those cans is 150 bucks (US). I poop you not! I had to buy a compressor and a gun to use urethane and epoxy finishes on my guitar projects. The funny thing is, the compressor and spray gun cost me less than one can of that finish in Japan.

This may be a silly question, though do I have to cover or do anything about the small holes on the guitar, for the bridge and pickup rings, for example? I have never applied clear coat onto a guitar body, but I was wondering if the clear coat will not cover the holes, so that I cannot screw the bridge and pickup ring after clear coat? I have saw other videos about spraying colour or clear coat and no one addresses this issue, so I assume that the clear coat shall not (completely) cover those (small) holes, right?
@BradAngove

The clear generally won’t fill those in completely. You should be able to get the screws in and easily see the holes that were used before.

Hey Brad, I'm painting a raw ash body. I've grain filled and dyed. If I skip sanding sealer... Would I be able to spray this enough to wet sand out any flaws? Should I still try to sand all flat before polishing or leave some texture to avoid burn through? Thanks,

@@BradAngove thanks Brad! I ended up deciding to just go with it..got it nice and flat in some spots but couldn't avoid the grain popping through so I knew it wasn't going to be perfect. Water based grain filler was tough to work with, maybe the blue 3m tape better than pin striping since I had lots of bleed through. But yes it's a killer guitar and came out good.
