Over the years of tig welding, this has been one of the BEST practice exercises to get better and improve my control when welding stainless steel. There are lots of small tricks and tips that help, but nothing has helped as much as just straight up PRACTICING. Over and over.... This exercise is definitely one of the funnest, and most effective to help me develop not only heat control, but a keen eye when it comes to guessing what to do when planning a pass. Grab a coffee and hang out, then get out to the machine and practice! :)
Check out my same practice session on ALUMINUM TIG!!!

To anyone watching this ‘simple’ technique video- it’s not simple. This guy is a genius. I can weld and I’m guessing you can too but this is a different level. Not one or two levels - zillions of levels. Controlling heat, gas and dabs to make art is skill from another world. I started too late. If you’re still in nappies (diapers) maybe you have a chance. Follow your dream but be prepared to fail... Awesome Dusty, I look forward to seeing more great art. Sell high!

@@PacificArcTigWelding Credit where it’s due, dude. I’m an artist, I have painted all my life, I write and do all sorts of 3D creative stuff but I’d swap it all to be as good as you in tig art. You have this world to yourself. I know others do this but there’s no real competition.

Thanks for discussing in detail where you messed up. It's these details showing your experience where I learn the most from your videos. It's helps me understand what I did wrong and how to modify my approach the next time.

I could be wrong as I've never done an actual testing on this but I was always taught the blue coloring was colder than the gold coloring in stainless??? Awesome video!

So awesome - you are an inspiration! I am amazed how you control heat, especially in the first section of the rows of 4. I know "it's all about gas flow and torch speed", but are you doing anything special underneath the piece to keep it nice and cool? Also curious the thickness of that plate. Thanks again!

Great video Dusty. Is there a reason why you do four dabs from one end then move back to the same end you started and start the dabs again from the same side. Instead of starting from the different end after each set of dabs?
@l8rn3rds

its so the beads run the same direction. i did find it interesting how he dragged the torch across the weld path instead of stopping and starting. maybe to keep the metal hot without using too much amps?

Anyone have suggestions for a stainless steel/regular steel beginner tig welder? I want to build medium to slightly heavy duty welding and a 110 would be better but if there is a good 220 suggestion that works too.

Probably nothing on the backside since the plate is so thick and amps are low to keep the heat down? Wouldn’t be full peno

Dude you weld too long and often , ditch the pedal and get an expensive torch with a button on it . Not only do you save space but most are water cooled as well. Used them on a heavy 3/16 304 and 316 stainless 300 yard long beer pasteurizer when I had to do water tight complete 50 feet long welds.
