How to Get Great Video Quality On Your DSLR (Canon T2i/550D)

What to do to get great video quality on your Canon T2i/550D.
1. Keep your settings on manual controls.
2. 1080p resolution and 24fps.
3. Shutter speed should always double your fps
4. Keep your ISO as low as possible. 1600 is as large as you should go.
5. Lower aperture gives you a shallower depth of field and a sharper image.
6. Invest in a fast prime lense, 50mm 1.8 is great.
7. Custom white balance, makes a HUGE difference. I'll post a tutorial on how to do this shortly.
8. Shoot your videos as flat as you can and color grade them afterwards. Technicolor cinestyle and Marvels both offer great free ways to do this.
www.technicolor...
marvelsfilm.wor...
9. Color grade your footage. This is one of the best ways to completely customize what your film will look like.
10. Keep your highlight tone priority disabled and your auto lighting optomizer to standard.
Another thing to keep in mind, I didn't mention this in the video, but having good lighting really helps as well.

Buy some lights! If money is an issue try to find a well lit area to shoot in and do your best. Crank the ISO way up if you have to, or shoot with a low f-stop. You can probably drop the shutter speed a little but I would try to leave it alone.

its not always the lens, i mean yes some lens let in less light then most but it could be your ISO setting as well most people prefer to shot at 400 iso i dont go any higher then 1600 personally, add more light if shooting at low ISO or try to open ur aperture to the biggest it can get if its a stock lens i believe its 3.5 if im correct but just depending on the shot just look at ISO, lighting and what aperture your shooting at

There is a button labeled "ISO" on the top right side of the camera near the shutter. Press it once and then use the scroll to select your ISO, then press it again to set it.

It's possible that your camera is not hitting the target bit rate because it is not writing fast enough. What kind of lens are you using? Try keeping it wide open. Does it take stills effectively? Could be dropping pixels. But yeah, you need a better card for sure.

Hi Jimmy! this video was very informative. I am a mom of 2 kids & i was sick of little auto focus cameras & handycams. i wanted clear & sharp images of my kids. i have 2 things to ask you. first when i am making video of my kids they are always running around & sometime it feels like they are out of focus. i have to press focus button again & again to make their images sharp & that sound of lens focusing is really loud & bad when i play the video on TV. am i doing something wrong?

You are definitely going to have the most control and best options with a 7D, but if you are new to DSLR and just learning, it would probably be more beneficial to get a T4i or T3i (depending on if you want touch screen or not). Not to mention a large portion of how good your picture looks has to do with the lens you use and the lighting. Start simple and learn how to get great quality and then advance yourself.
@Jimmyjd4
@Jimmyjd4 11 лет назад
Try to stop your lens down a bit (put it at a higher F-stop) as this will increase the depth of field and make it easier to keep everything in focus. If you turn autofocus off you won't have to deal with the noise. I might also recommend shooting at 30fps for home movie type shoots as it will give you more fluid motion and less choppiness.
@Jimmyjd4
@Jimmyjd4 12 лет назад
Depends how much you're looking to spend. I really like the zoom mics. H4 is optimal but if you're tight on cash an H1 is still great.
@Jimmyjd4
@Jimmyjd4 11 лет назад
You can just use the scroll wheel, "Av" is the aperture button. Pressing it does nothing. If you hold the button down and dial left or right it will change your F-stop (if using an automatic lens).
@Jimmyjd4
@Jimmyjd4 11 лет назад
You'll have to compensate by bumping up your ISO and opening the lens up a bit in a lower light setting. This can increase grain and make it a bit harder to focus so try to add as much light to the scene before touching these options.

You forgot #4. Never use the camera mic for talent audio. It sucks. There is a 3.5mm jack input that allows use of a prosumer lav mic (and I think it defeats the auto gain). Even better would be second system sound using a digital recorder, slating at the beginning of each take, using the camera mic for reference only and laying in the good audio in post. Just a thought.

Yeah, class ten will really help, class 4 can't keep up with the data transfer of 1080p at 24fps and it comes out shitty. I'd suggest PNY class 10 8gb, you can shoot about 2 and a half hours of HD footage that will come out right.

Thanks for this. Really helped. For some strange reason my setting was on 25fps instead of 24fps. So it was jerky. Have you done any tutorials on how to get HD quality once transferred to PC. Mine look great on the camera with HDMI lead connected. But then once in the computer - looks blurry. Not sure why? Keep up the good work.

With custom white balance - do I reset it for each location I shoot in? Also why is custom white balance good?
@Jimmyjd4
@Jimmyjd4 11 лет назад
Your frame rate has nothing to do with image quality, the only thing it affects is how smooth the motion is. If you shoot the same exact shot at both 24fps and 60fps it will look exactly the same. The 24fps shot will have a bit slower motion to it and feel more cinematic while the 60fps will have more fluid and smooth motion. I merely suggested 24fps because that's how most films shoot. However, if you are planning to speed up or slow down your clips in post, then shoot 60fps.

I have a question. I'm really new at this. I just purchased a Canon T2i, and I have settings on 1920x1080p 24fps, ISO 100. But when I record it will get really noisy and grainy. It seems there is no difference if I put the ISO at 100 or 6400. Even in the daylight shooting outside the quality seems.. really crappy. Could that be that I'm using a 8GB SDHC only class 4?? I really would appreciate some advice or help!!

Thanks for the comment. Sony Vegas is great, I personally use either Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro. If you want a film look the first thing to do is follow all the steps listed in this video. When you color correct you will really be able to sculpt and define the look you want. Get your program, get to know it, and figure out how you like to grade your footage. I'll work on some more tutorials soon.

Does a shallow depth of field gives a sharper image, as oppose to a deep depth of field?
@Alexandra-Rex
@Alexandra-Rex 10 лет назад
Shallow depth of field gives shallow depth of field. If you close the aperture more, it usually gets sharper. A lot of lenses are their sharpest around f/5.6 to f/8, or even at f/4. But really good lenses are sharp much before that. When you start going to very small apertures, you start to get diffraction, which means you start losing details again, even if what's is in focus increases.

There are a few ways. You can set your camera for "neutral" and dial back the contrast and saturation a bit, or you can install a present picture profile like "cinestyle: or "super flat". I have links for the downloads in the description.

Some useful information but a poor quality video, especially considering you are supposed to be showing us how to get great video quality. Also, as a good number of people on here have mentioned, the background noise is very distracting and completely unnecessary, please just get rid of it. You said a wide aperture will give a sharper image. This is strictly incorrect although with a shallower depth of field, (which a wide aperture will give), the focused area or image plane will appear sharper. You also said that you are good at replying to comments but I don't see much evidence of that, perhaps you will reply to my comment. Thanks for posting the video, nonetheless.
@Jimmyjd4
@Jimmyjd4 8 лет назад
+Brian Hall Hey Brian. As you can see this video was posted 3 years ago, before I owned any lights (which is why the video admittedly looks like crap) or really knew a great deal about what I was doing. I really made the video for kids I was going to school with who asked me about my camera settings, and it kinda blew up. The main reason I stopped responding to people, aside from being intensely busy, is because I am sick of hearing about the background music. Yes I get it, everyone hates it. It's a part of the video. I can't do anything about that. I stopped using it in other videos I made. Anyway I haven't made any tutorial vids in a long time. I've been using my channel pretty much just for music lately. I'm not above getting back into it though. Thanks for the comment.
