IN this video I draw Mr. Sculpy! This little old man I saw at the grocery store. In the video I also talk about Getting your groove back, finding inspiration and dealing with addiction.
NOTE: I filmed this video a couple months ago, and the things I talk about in the video really helped me, and I'm working on an update video to talk about what worked and why. In case anyone is wondering if I'm still down or something. Life is pretty good. Keep smiling!
Please LIKE and SHARE the video if you like it. Thanks for watching!

I realized something recently...I tell myself I'm ok with having art for a job, but I don't think I've ever just sat down, without distractions, and just drew/painted for 8-10 hours like any professional artist. I have way too many excuses and i don't really make good goals for myself. i'm beginning to get worried that maybe being a professional artist isn't something i would enjoy doing because it'd make art into a chore, and then that leaves the question of what else i would do which basically leaves me with nothing given art is one of the only things in my life i put effort into out of my own free will. but that's another can of worms altogether lol thanks for this video and reinforcing the conclusion i came to will :)

Thank you for this video. Drawing is meditation. I've been wanting to learn how to meditate for so long. But I've always known how. I just never recognized it. Drawing is meditation. And I'd forgotten how much I loved getting lost in creating. I'm glad I found your channel. Thank you.

This video was magic for me. I have been experiencing EVERYTHING you mentioned in this video and I have been so in my own head about it that I honestly started beleiving I was the only person who felt this way. I've been in a rut for a month or so now and it's been putting a critical stop in all of my creative plans. Thank you so much for posting this video. Not only did you inspire me to work on these issues but youve inspired my faith in humanity. This here is what I beleive RU-vid should see more of, humans inspiring genuine connections with other humans that transcend all social media barriers. In short, you are awesome and I have subscribed.

A lot of this hit way too close to home. In fact, I've been watching these videos, not only for inspiration, but especially as a distraction from all the stress in my head that I can't deal with. Most are issues I am forced into against my will and unchangeable, leading to depression and some social anxieties. This was both hard to listen to and VERY good to listen to. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these kinds of things!

It is so funny I ended up seeing your video. Last summer I noticed that the more I worked on my blanket the more inspired I became. My second one even more than the first. It was so strange. With the first I made some counting mistakes but the blanket still came out nice which made me want to do an encore by making a bigger and better blanket. With the second one I started thinking about my life differently. I believe that, Because the blanket requires counting and design its almost impossible to think about anything else. every time I have had a conversation while stitching I have either missed stitches or added to many, Which can deform your blanket greatly. this is what happened to my second blanket. it stated to look like I was making a skirt. I learned really quick to count my stitches. Now All I hear is 1 2 3, 1 2 3 and what stitch I want to do next. sometimes it takes me an hour to decide my next stitch, I'm trying out stitches, pulling out stitches and learning new stitches. I am definitely present while stitching that blanket. Doing the blanket helped me with other things I want and need to do. I'm addicted to thinking so sometimes the things I want to do seem so difficult to do(It can be something entertaining or something as simple as eating). But the blanket prevents me from thinking so I will get a feeling of excitement to do the other things that may have felt was difficult to do before. It also helps with my patience and temper. As for the dismissing, It is so hard. my thinking is compulsive. Have you ever hummed a song and wanted to stop. and every time you looked up you were humming it again. until your head wants to burst. Well that's my thinking addiction. So I need to do something that over powers it. It has to be something that's so simple that I think I am going to sit there and just give in to thinking but instead I end up counting lol. Sudoku helps me not to think but it doesn't inspire me to do bigger and better. it's like a temp pill for the moment. Thanks for sharing It helps me to see I'm not alone in trying to figure this thing out.

As always you give such good down-to-Earth advice. Distractions are my biggest enemy. A lot of them are as you say, ways to keep myself from thinking about all of my disappointments in life. I'm mad at myself for not going to college, for not drawing enough the last few years and I'm mad at myself for becoming a father so young. Well, that last one is hands down the best thing to ever happen to me, nothing has ever made me feel as much joy as seeing my son smile, a single hug from him makes my heart melt, but massive amounts of time and energy go to him. I've worked myself into a corner over the past few years where I didn't leave myself enough room for improving myself. I sort of realized a little while back that I really hurt myself by playing too many games or watching too many tv shows but I was always mentally exhausted from hating my job so much, from taking care of my son and being constantly broke. I always just wanted to slump down on the couch and stop thinking. I cut out a lot of game playing from my life and funneled that time into my sketchbooks and it was incredible how big the gains in my abilities became. I still spend too much time on netflix or browsing the internet but hearing you talk about overcoming your stress and watching you draw...it really makes it click more than either alone could. Watching somebody with so much practice and skill work while at the same time really cements the lessons you are teaching. It sort of makes my brain say, "Stop wasting your time and you'll be this good someday." That was way too much text for a youtube comment. Anyway, long story short; you make me want to quit doing pointless things reach for greatness and I appreciate your videos. Now I'm gonna stop watching your videos and plug in my wacom. Good day.

You are reminding me of books such as The Power of Now and Way of the Peaceful Warrior. It is very difficult to remember that I am here, now, in this moment. It is too easy to get distracted. I know it is for me and I’m constantly arguing internally with myself and I’m depressed about my life. Instead of seeking happiness, I need to just be happy. I love watching you draw and hearing your thoughts. Keep them coming sir!

Thanks for the illumination that makes me feel I am not the only one struggling with the same things. I NEVER comment on anyone's video until now. It seems you've compelled me to, I appreciate what you share. Let us know how you're getting on with going back on track. Many artists for some reason suffer from a slight case of depression (hopelessness) which impacts creativity and I have found that taking a multivitamin, a B-complex vitamin, and 5-HTP every morning seem to cure that problem. My distractions from homework and drawings is mainly guitar, the internet ( which I am using to distract myself *right* *now* ) and photos. With the guitar thing, I like music. I'm a musical person it's just that I try to learn new things, I try to figure things out but it doesn't really feel like I'm getting anything done. At the end of the day, I still haven't done the history homework that was due in yesterday and I still haven't really accomplished anything. You explained the internet thing pretty well in the video so I'm gonna skip straight to the last one: I like to stay in the past. I hold on to memories like a lifeline and sometimes, the past can be the most distracting thing. And there are days that I get inspired and days I want to get up and draw or write or play (musically). But on most days, the more time I spend noodling around aimlessly, the more time I spend mindlessly browsing the internet, the more memories I obsess over, the less I get done. Thanks Will. I'll try. Now I'm gonna go and get some sleep because it's like 00:26 in the morning and I should *not* be up this late.

After watching this video, I realized I'm a "avoidaholic" in several levels! I've always had this kind of negative thoughts and distractions that keep me away from getting projects and things done, but the difference is that now I'm aware of them and I'll know how to deal with them. I actually wrote down the three steps for getting inspired (or being available for inspiration) so I won't forget later. By the way, congratulations for your work! You're an amazing artist!

Seriously I have to thank you man. I grew up an "Artist" and am going through some depression now that I'm in college for Graphic Design. I rarely get the chance to draw, and when I do, I find myself at a loss of inspiration or creativity. I have so many other thoughts going through my mind. The internet thing has been my main distraction. Because when you are depressed and feel hopeless, the internet is just always there to distract me from my frustrations.I have to thank you soooo much! You gave me hope and gave me some real insight to how much I've allowed technology to babysit me and my crazy emotions ahahh! I really respect you! Stay strong! :)

I just wanted to let you know how much you've helped me. I am constantly plagued by negative thoughts, even if it's not about my drawings. I always assumed that they were true because I was thinking them. These thoughts were coming from my head so they had to be right. I loved how you compared negative thoughts to a present and how you didn't have to accept them. I feel like I can move on from these negative thoughts that so often controlled me, because they don't have to be true.

I would’ve been 12 when this originally came out but i can say this was what I needed right in this moment. I’m in my last year at art school (in animation!!!) and this past year I’ve just been in the worst rut I’ve ever been in and I’m also someone who has to figure it out, I’m a planner. Hell the year this aired my best friend and I planned a theoretical trip to Japan if we were to ever go one day. So learning that it is impossible to figure out a rut, why it happens, and how to fix it, is hard to process but it’s nice to know I’m not alone in this. I feel like before burning out last year I knew how to be present, how to fail, take critique, I was on my shit. I feel like I’m relearning all my systems of productivity and it’s hard to have to relearn all this stuff in my last year. Anyways this was exactly what I needed thank you

there's an Anne Lamott essay basically about sitting down to work despite an overwhelming sense of self-doubt surrounding you, where she writes "don't forget the dogs, the dogs in their pen who will surely hurtle and snarl their way if you ever *stop* writing, because writing is, for some of us, the latch that keeps the door of the pen closed, keeps those crazy ravenous dogs contained." reminded me of your sentiment to avoid the vapid distractions keeping us from facing our negative thoughts... because it's no real solution. Working on what's important to me makes me feel vulnerable, like it's the "real deal" and the real substance of my life... and it's terrifying to think your life purpose can so easily make your life a living hell, but in a way it's like jumping off a cliff and building wings on the way down :'') thanks for the talk and your ever-inspiring work

Thank you so so much for this. Lately I haven't been able to draw as much as I would have, because I start thinking about the past and future. So I decide I'll look at the internet to inspire me, and just get distracted. Then I start thinking about how I'll never be that good, or what I'm even doing. Then because I got nothing done, I get even more angry at my own mind. Or when I did something, and it didn't get the "likes" i wanted it to, I would feel let down, like i had wasted my time. This video has really helped me. Everytime I start to do this, Ill just watch this agian to remind myself what I should be doing.

I will try to do as you say and just turn off my computer and actually draw. But lately i just stare at a blank page or a blank wall. Nothing comes to mind except for the things that i have drawn a thousand times. An eye, a wing, a heart and nothing solid or complete ever comes out of them. Hey Will, I just wanted to thank you for this video. I'm a 21 year old student studying Animation at university in England, and I really can relate to what you're talking about here. I feel like for the first time in my life I am feeling most of what you just described, and I don't know what to do with myself to get out of this difficult 'stage'. I am an 'avoidaholic', there is no question about it. The advice you just gave me has really hit home, and I feel as though I know how to approach my situation a little better - instead of hiding from it through distractions. I almost can't believe that I came across this video, it couldn't have come at a better time in my video feed. And finally, the drawing is fantastic, I am now most likely going to go on a Will Terrell video spree! If you read this, then thank you! If not, it still helped me to type out what I'm feeling right now - I don't usually comment on videos, let alone open up to the internet.

I just subscribed to your channel, and every day I'm even happier that I did! I definitely understand what you're talking about here. I stopped watching television (for the most part) about two years ago, and I'm so pleased with the amount of time it's opened up to do better things. When I DO get bored, I make the effort to do something spontaneous. It's usually something as small spilling coffee or ink or something on my sketchbook. I don't know. Doing little, stupid things that I wouldn't normally do usually gets me in the creative spirit again.

My name is Cliff and I am an *Avoidaholic*. byron rempel and I have had many discussions about some of the things you talk about in this video, *****. You are far from alone in that. I am currently in one of those 'have so many ideas floating around at once that i am stuck' modes. I recently got some index card holders to organize my commissions. I am going to add one to get the ideas out of my head and into an 'idea box' for future use. Thank you for continually putting out good content.

***** I actually own the book. I got about partway through and the *Avoidaholic* in me took over. This was several years ago. I think I am ready to give it another go. Another great book (far older) is 'How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life' by Alan Lakein. Its short, sweet and to the point. The effects are immediate but have a habit of wearing off if I don't take a booster shot periodically (which, I am way over due for).

Thanks a lot for your thoughts Cliff and Will! Very often I need several days before getting to start with one project, because of my ideas running around in my head and nowhere a starting point to find. I will try your recipe !!

I just wanted to thank you for this video. I've been feeling pretty bummed out lately with stuff and I pulled myself around last night. I couldn't agree more with what you're saying about being here and just not thinking. I sat down with my sketchbook last night and I said to myself "just do it. Just draw and don't think" and I produced one of the best sketches that I've done in months. It felt really good to be proud of what I'd done again. I listened to this video whilst working on some 3D character retopology for a game and it just eased all of my frustration and worries. I'm chilled and I have you to thank for that! :D

Thanks Will. I never thought I was one to avoid obstacles or negative thoughts until just now. Every time I sit down to draw and it doesn't go very well, I'll grab my iPad and watch youtube. But I am going to try and make a better effort to deal with the negative thoughts. Especially since I'm starting on my BFA in the spring.

I'm so glad I have found your youtube channel! I have you talking in the background while I work and EVERYTHING you say I relate to! I haven't done what I love for a long time due to negative thoughts and "life" getting in the way and what's more frustrating is the people around me don't understand as they are not creative. I am a fine art photographer and I finished university last year and I have been going through that anti climax phase where I don't know what to do now haha. I now have no darkroom or studio so I find it difficult to be motivated but after listening to you and realising it is not just me, I am going to try and make a conscience effort to be productive! Thank you Will! Your videos are wonderful and I could watch how you draw for hours and listen to your experiences and advice! x

This is brilliant! I am currently studying an A-Level art course and it's making me forget what I love so much about art, just drawing, being creative and drawing just for the joy of it. This has really given me a boost and I have been getting back into doing my own drawings in my spare time and trying to be more productive, thank you so much for the inspiration Will! :)

I have forgotten to comment this video a lot of times. That negative thoughts paralysing the person. That happened to me A LOT this year and it was depressing. It was devastating myself. My boyfriend got very worried about me so did some of my friends and I was lucky they were all there to support me. I was having problems releasing I wanted to do to many things in a period of time it would be impossible even for a talented professional and I'm still just a student. lol I was also trying to know I want to do of my life and that was so scary it made me cry a lot of times. I ended up fine. Now I know what I want and focus the best I can. I'm getting better and now I know you and I mean it when I say your videos really help =) That video remembers me of how tuff that year was and how I got to over come it but I still have things I don't like to do so even looking to the wall is more interesting than actually doing it! ahhahahaha

I feel the same way about having to constantly distract myself, and I know it's bad. I just graduated from high school and was interested in art ever since I was a kid. I clicked on your "5 tips for better drawing" video and started watching all your vids. I know I need to get more organised and start getting out and doing something with my life. I was hoping to be come an engineer, who's hobby is drawing and painting. I really feel inspired to get myself sorted out and move on to collage. Thanks, - Dan

Thank you for this video. I also struggle with getting away from the computer and TV. After working all day, Sometimes I really want to do nothing but melt into my couch and do absolutely nothing. But I'm trying to change that. Thank you for the words of advice. I'm just now getting to watch this series of videos.

You are such an amazing person and I just need to tell you how grateful I am to you for finally making me sit down and draw. I just put one of your videos in the background and listen to you talk cause you are so inspirational and calming. I graduated as a fashion designer but I am just terrible at drawing.,really bad and I've been putting it away cause I'm just scared of it but these last few days I've really been working hard thanks to your tips and I plan on going strong with it. So thank you, thank you so very much :) Looking forward to your next video! :))

Great thoughts here. Just subscribed. Hearing you talk about everything just made me realize a simple truth. I'm avoiding my curiosity and thirst for making a big change in my life. I know, in my heart, that it's what I want to do. I've just been too busy thinking about doing it and giving myself fears to consider. Instead of just taking a chance. There's a time to strategize. But right now is the time to jump and enjoy the ride. Thanks WIll - I'm grateful I came across this video.

For me, my primary issue seems to be just to initiate the process, I always seem to find some distraction or something or other to do in place of just sitting down and focusing all of my attention on drawing. I feel that I have the ideas, I have the dedication, and I have the means of producing drawings I just lack the initiative but as always your advice has really provided me with some much needed insight as to how to overcome these obstacles.

This was absolutely mindblowingly great and PERFECT for me to see today. Thank you so much for being so honest - about internet etc, but especially about thought vs. creativity and negative thoughts. Incredible, spot-on and dissolved my artistic existential crisis I was having today!
