Learn how to get rid of a stye on your eyelid FAST! A stye could be anything growing on the eyelid but the most common is an eye pimple (hordeolum) and a chalazion. Thankfully, both chalazion home treatment and stye treatment are similar and often even resolve on their own.
About This Video: In this video, Joseph J. Allen, OD FAAO from Doctor Eye Health explains the difference between chalazion vs stye and reviews the different types of eye stye treatment options available. If you have some type of eye stye or maybe you have an “eye pimple” it could be a hordeolum - an eyelid infection - or it could be a chalazion (an eyelid cyst made of blocked up oils). Thankfully, there are many ways of how to get rid of a stye fast and eye chalazion home treatment is very similar to other stye treatment methods. An important lesson in this video is if you have a eye chalazion or eyelid stye, a stye pop is not recommended unless it happens naturally. Popping a stye on your eyelid could just make things worse. As always, if experiencing any pain or loss of vision you need to consult your local eye care professional ASAP.

I appreciate your often-repeated advice to avoid trying to treat eye problems ourselves. It cannot be stressed enough. I’ve dealt with glaucoma (after being treated for 18 months it was determined that I just had thick corneas) macular degeneration (at 50 I was the youngest patient in the waiting room by 20 years) 2 retinal tears, 2 vitrectomy ( the plural is ??) and 2 cataract surgeries. I can’t say I enjoyed any of this. I particularly found odd the 7 injections of Avastin into the eyeball to treat macular degeneration, but I found little of it painful. What I learned: 1) get checked immediately if you have vision issues beyond squinting because you need to update your prescription 2) Never, Ever attempt to treat any vision issues yourself beyond a hot pack for a stye or artificial tears for dryness. The risk is just not worth it. Thanks for stressing this, doc.

Heat up the back of a spoon under hot water, (touch to make sure it’s not burning hot) then apply it to the affected area. Hold it there until it’s not warm then do it again, repeat for like 10 or 15 minutes. Feels good and helps move things along. My styes and swelling resolved in a few days.

So I've had a big chalazion on my eye for over 2 weeks and even my eyelid became super dark. I went to the pharmacy, got some tobradex and it helped with the swelling but not the discoloration or the 'ball' that remained and I was super self conscious of it and getting worried that I would have to get it removed because I DONT have much money at the moment. I found your video and did the massage and the hot compress and I'm not joking, I just woke up saw that it literally almost disappeared!! I couldnt believe it! Thank you so so much!

This absolutely works.! I had a chalazion for over 3-4 months and warm cloth compress was not working. I got an eye mask and did warm compress 5 times a day. Even at work I used to do it. It was healing but not vanishing completely but after a week while I had the mask on and sleeping woke up to a bursted chalazion. Consistency is the key.
@redluv123

Hi! Did you have the eye mask on overnight or how long did you sleep with the mask on? Most of them say to do it for 10 minutes at a time. It crushes and messes up my eye brow and eye lash hairs 😂😂 but I’m curious to know because I’ve been having one on top my eyelid for almost 3 months now :( it’s not painful or pussy or red. Just a bump on my eyelid but it is visually noticeable and feels weird when touched, like a vertical shaped bump

What I do which really helps is the second you feel a style coming on, even if you can’t see it yet, immediately put in eye drops specifically meant for style treatment. Do this about 3 times a day. Apply a hot compress as he said about 5-6 times a day. If you do this for about 2 days before the style has fully formed, hopefully you prevent it from growing and becoming painful. Hope this helps!!!

Wow! I haven’t heard about studies saying that oral antibiotics are the most beneficial to styes. I just finished med school and have suffered from styes for years! One doctor prescribed oral antibiotics to me for my hordeolum once, and it prevented it from becoming a full-blown stye with pus. However, the ophthalmologists I’ve consulted with often just gave me topical antibiotics, which in my opinion, didn’t make any difference in terms of the healing time and appearance of the stye. I’m surprised to find out that oral antibiotics are actually the more effective management. Styes have significantly affected my daily life in the past years. It is bothersome and just doesn’t look pretty. Will go check out your other videos about this :) Thank you!

I just had a stye inside my eye on the upper lid. I used a cream called Prid that I got at Walmart. It is a natural drawing salve that comes in a little round orange container. I put a very thin application on the OUTSIDE of my eyelid (NOT inside my eye) a couple of times the first day and it was gone by the next day. I am not allergic to anything I know of. If you are considering using this I would check the ingredients first just to make sure your not allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients. You may even want to do a small test on your skin somewhere else to check for any sensitivities or reactions, especially if you have other sensitivities. I did not have any negative side effects or issues and I have used this method a few times in the past as well.

I developed two chalazions a few months ago. I’ve never had any issues with my eyes until then. I had to see a specialist to have them removed. The eye specialist also said that I had blepharitis. I just figured it was the dry air in my office at work. I found your channel right about the time I was diagnosed with them. Thank you so much for recommending OcuSoft wipes! I use them all the time. I would really like to offer a piece of advice to those of you who don’t always wash your make up off at night. Please take your eye health seriously. I threw out all of my cosmetics (which you should do regularly) and switched to a new brand that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals, etc. it’s amazing what you can find on ingredient labels. I also purchased an electric eye mask (warm) that I occasionally wear for about 10 minutes. I really don’t want to have another chalazion excision done again. (There are videos here on YT showing you exactly what the procedure is like. It’s not fun!) Proper eye hygiene and routine eye exams are so important. Thank you doctor for all of your helpful advice! P.S. It was also recommended to do eyelid washes with baby shampoo (diluted with water) and a Qtip. That did not work for me as it burned too much. I’m sticking with the OcuSoft wipes!

@@alifkhan1316 Yes. Only use water that has been boiled for 5 full minutes, then cool, on your eyes. Next, but eyelash shampoo in a pump bottle and a clean sterilized make up brush to wash your lids and lash line everyday, is the best prevention. However, if you get a stye, put peppermint on your stye. It will give the stye a massage feeling, with you having to do it. You can put it before sleep, it will burn a bit though, but speeds things up. I'm not a doctor though. Good luck!

This is my first one since I was in my 20's. I am 63 right now. I think this is probably the 3rd one in my lifetime. I've been putting hot compresses on it. I've had it for a week now. It started like a headache in my eye. So I didn't think anything about it. I finally looked in the mirror one night on my way to bed. That was about4 days of the pain. That's when I seen it was swollen and red across my lid. Now the pain is gone but it is still a little swollen in the middle and not quite as red. I put the shower hot water on it every night before going to bed. I thought it was just left over from my silent migraines and regular migraines at first, since I was having that about2 weeks before the stye started. Thank you for the info.

I have what I think is a chalazion. I noticed blurry vision and also what felt like a pimple under my eyelid. I've had one before so I recognize the symptoms. Was given oral antibiotics last time but trying to resolve this myself this time. I placed my mother's hearing pad on low heat on my eye w a tissue between my eye and the heating pad just in case it's a stye Then did eye massage as instructed. Cleaned my eyes with baby shampoo. The next morning I did the same thing. I am trying not to wear makeup during this process either. Day two I can barely feel the pimple on my eye and I see that it has shrunk. I will continue doing this until it disappears. I believe this happened because I slept with a little eye makeup on a few times; a very bad habit. So grateful I stumbled across this video.

A partially filled hot water bottle over the warm washcloth can keep it warm for a longer duration. A bit awkward to keep in place - since it has a tendency to roll off, but it's an approach that's workable. (The "bottle" in this case is the same as one of those ice-bag things for fevers or heat stress, but filled with water that's about as hot as you can tolerate having against you for a prolonged period.)

A few years ago I developed a stye on one of my eyelid. Everyday it would grow bigger and I looked for remedies to get rid of it but nothing helped until I did what was my last option. I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re sensitive to pain because it’s painful af. I warmed up a spoon on the stove, waited until it cooled enough but still hot and applied it in a method of trying to pop my stye. By doing so I may have given my stye an air way cause the next day it started to shrink then it finally popped. I cleaned it out and after a few days it was completely gone. No scars, no more stye.

Thank you for the recommendations, doc! If there's anything else you can recommend, please do, I have had a long-term weird and unpleasant experience with styes over the past few years and I don't want to go through it again, it ended in an excision of two or three clogged glands, one of which was hard and red and immovable after trying eyedrop steroids AND oral antibiotics. That eye is doing much much better now, although now I've found a little baby stye in my other eye, and I'm madly trying to hit it with the heat compresses, a mild honey water for an antibiotic (I don't dare use the ointment the doc gave me for post-excision, don't want to risk cross contamination), tea tree oil cleaner, and massages after hitting my hands with a thorough wash and small amount of isopropyl alcohol. Overboard for a baby stye? Maybe. Am I going to let up? NOOO.

Hi Doc; I have had 2 chalazion's, my eye doctor recommended using a chicken egg to heat the area where the ducts are clogged. You heat it up the egg in water and then hold it on the inflamed area. The egg has mass and stays hot for a while, its also pointed on one end so you can apply the heat more directly where you need it instead of heating your entire eye ball which affects your vision for awhile. I thought it was a weird idea at first but it worked good, I actually got one of my chalazions to drain out on its own, what a relief.
