Anxiety is a worldwide problem. It is a problem where our own biology-which was designed to insure our survival as hunters and gatherers-is sabotaging our bodies and minds. When we feel fear or stress, our body releases cortisol (the stress hormone). This cortisol release is part of the fight or flight response. In this episode of Ask Teal, Teal shares eleven tips, which will help us to get rid of anxiety.

makenna smith If you want to lose your anxiety forever then have a look at your diet. If you eat sugar, processed or junk food or drink a lot of soda then stop. Clean up your diet, eat only whole foods that are natural to the body (eg fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, beans etc.) and drink plenty of water. Stay away from caffeine and too much salt, exercise daily and get plenty of sleep. Your anxiety will go away within a few days to a couple of weeks. Trust me, I suffered with anxiety and panic attacks for over 10 years as I was a drug user, smoker and alcoholic with a poor diet. As soon as I gave them all up and did the advice I have just given you, my panic stopped altogether.

When Teal said, “self care is something you REALLY need to commit to if you suffer from anxiety” i had an epiphany. Self discipline is something i’ve struggled with mastering for a long time and i’ve been challenging myself to overcome it. After she said that, it clicked to me that my anxiety can actually be seen as a gift in a way. it forces me to discipline myself enough to relieve my anxiety. I HAVE to be disciplined to take care of myself daily to relieve my anxiety. It’s like mastering 2 things at once. Thank you! ❤

Same here! It's too true.. I had tears come up too, so many times have I told myself I need to 'fight' anxiety and push myself in those situation to 'get over them'.. So I did, and 'survived' this way for years until I physically collapsed at age 30. This was so important for me to hear today. Good luck! :)

+Melissa M. you can't fight anxiety. it's impossible. you have to take time to allow the anxiety or panic to move through the body by shaking, tremoring allowing the body to move in whichever way it needs to release the pent up energy.

Hey guys, so i suffered from anxiety for about 4 years. and i finally fully healed it. so for me, i had too much stress in my body and i was magnesium deficient. so once i got enough magnesium i could start relaxing more, sleeping better, then yoga helped a ton by releasing the stress from my body. Now i feel like im 18 again. i feel amazing, never any anxiety anymore. Hope this can help someone. Good luck.

It was a game changer when I realized that my anxiety was triggered by low blood sugar or lack of good sleep. I made connection between my physical and mental health and I can actually control it. I always thought that its just bad thoughts and stuff but it isnt... Its purely just my body being tired and out of balance.

I love you for showing me Im not crazy - Im sick and tired of people telling me to do things by pushing myself; thank God, I know better; fear is not a problem, in most cases fear is solution - it is the way of our body and mind telling us what is not good for us; we just need to learn to distinguish when our fear is the way we try to fool ourselves from times when our fear is warning us about something that can hurt us; all we need to do in order to be able to make this distinguish is, at the beginning, to do as our fear says - stop, do not do what doesnt feel comfortable; in time, you will know, you will make fear your friend;

Diet, excersize, spiritual health, sleep. The truth. People don't realize, doctors not even, how important a good diet is. You are what you eat. And most people with mental problems have a horrible diet (autistic, schizohrenix, social anxiety people for instance). Plust low self esteem/worth, guilt and shame are the biggest causes of anxiety. First learn to forgive yourself/mistakes and others, before you can heal. The importance of self acceptance and forgiveness is crucial!

Thank you Teal, this is really saving me right now. I lost my mother to Covid before Christmas and have spiraled into old generalized anxiety.. like physically having trouble eating/swallowing my food. It feels insane but I’m so self aware of myself that I’ve been able to keep from having full blown panic of mental/bodily breakdown. This gives me so much hope and tools I will start tomorrow.

Chris Fox It sounds like you are coming to the crossroads. You worry about life after school. What dose everything mean? You don't want to be trapped in the rat race and yet you also want to know that you will be fine and not have to worry about basic needs or you might have the fear of disappointing others. We all experience this. You should talk to a counselor at school or seek advice from adults that you trust. Remember that the darkest hour is always before the dawn. Don't despair. The answers will come to you.

I like what Teal says here about anxiety. I do suffer with this even tho' I know it can develop into a real problem for me. Its a work in progress and I work at it everyday. It has gotten better since I've allowed the universe to take over. Underneath all of this anxiety and fear is a real confident, happy, secure person. I just have to keep scraping away all of the years of anxiety that have become like barnacles on my spirit. I won't give up! I dislike the damage my anxiety has caused me in my life. I am putting a stop to it everyday. Thanks for the video Teal. :)

i appreciate this message so much because it resonates so deeply. i was staying at a homeless shelter and i had developed anxiety. wouldn't say it was terribly severe but it was enough to interfere with my ability to think clearly and focus on getting out of that environment. i remember meeting with the staff, and i don't mean to sound ungrateful towards them and what they were trying to establish, but they had their heads way up their asses and i'm glad my mind was clear enough to be adamant about not taking medication for my anxiety and allowing to structure a slightly unconventional routine to help me get through without coming out more damaged than i already was. so appreciate that you took the time to come up with healthy natural ways to cure anxiety and stress. though i can't speak for people with more severe mental illnesses, thanks to your video i at least feel like i have more knowledge about how i can in turn help others deal with their anxieties in a more gentle, self-loving way.

What an odd concept. Don't do anything that makes you anxious! People laugh at me and get angry at me and think i'm crazy over me choosing to not watch the news. They say its irresponsible, that being thin-skinned as they say is wrong, I got so much gump for it, I put it in my head that everything I'm happy about is wrong, and every response to that gives me anxiety makes me crazy. So what you're saying is i'm not crazy for have the thoughts I have and I"m not crazy for trying to make myself happy even if it's strongly against what others want me to be like?

Be careful with that mindset bc for people with anxiety, if you start avoiding things that make you anxious then you are on a trap to creating an ever shrinking comfort zone, which can and will shrink to the point you can do hardly anything without major anxiety. If it's just avoiding the news, ok avoid the news, but keep an eye on what you are avoiding.

Upon awakening, keep eyes closed and take 8 deep breaths, hold that at the top for 8 seconds. Immediately go get something to eat as cortisol is high, handful or almonds or berries, or protein. Write in expression journal. Write in my gratitude journal. Exercise. Drink glasses of water. Be a diva. Right before bed, watch funny videos, do a gratitude journal, build success for the day you will face.. Try to identify the feelings you are feeling, and then question them.

For the last 3 years I been in very extreme ptsd. I knew I needed people, that now its the time I need anyone the most. But thats the tricky with anxiety, no human want to be around u, they sense it and then eighter run away or take advantage of u in the situation cuz ur weak. Its been even impossible to pay for someone to even listen 30 min straight without interrupting or talking about their issues. Ive tried so much. Im to scared of people. This video helped a bit thou

YES!! Your anti-anxiety routine sounds AMAZING! It's very similar to what I do when I don't have to go to work (like on weekends or holidays). I'd like to offer one correction to something you said. Blood sugar levels are actually HIGHEST in the morning (just like cortisol). It's called the "Dawn Phenomenon" if you want to look it up and we ALL have it. It's the body's natural way of waking you up and giving you breakfast. It makes perfect sense. You actually DON'T need to eat breakfast as a result of this. Your body takes care of you. That's WHY you have more cortisol as well in the morning. It's the energy your body is providing for you to wake up from your most relaxed state (sleep) and have the energy to start your day. Your body gives you your breakfast. Isn't that amazing! I love my body! :-) I measure my glucose multiple times a day (no I'm not diabetic, just a person with a scientific nature who likes to learn biohack techniques and tried Keto to lose some weight which calls for you to measure your blood glucose and ketones) and I've confirmed this Dawn Phenomenon. Glucose is definitely at the highest point in the morning. And several doctors have confirmed this is a normal state for everyone as well. I'm not telling you to stop eating breakfast. Everyone needs to do what works for them. But you want to go off correct information. You don't have to be afraid of missing breakfast. Your body is perfectly capable of handling reasonable states of fasting. If it weren't we humans would not be here today. :-)

I recently became grossly affected by anxiety and panic out of nowhere, after an adverse, severe, reaction with a fat burner that hospitalized me. Many months and doctors later, I finally went to see a naturopathic doctor who introduced nutritional balancing to me and since then have realized it was a severe adrenal burnout, and what I was really experiencing was low blood sugar attacks and non responsive stress hormones. It wasn't my brain, it was my body. Through eating, as you explaining here, sleep and avoiding low blood sugar, I have suddenly become lifted of all of these traumatic experiences that circled around anxiety. Although I am still healing, I am shocked how many doctors tried to put me on medication and told me it was in my head, and how much money I spent on it, to realize and integrate the fact that I am not a victim, and very much am in control now that I have the knowledge. This video is so perfect in so many ways and each and every tip works so so so well. But, as you said, it is all about deliberate consistency. Thank you for this video and that you for resonating with me on this topic, and so many others.

Hi Harley Hoping to achieve is an understatement, you should seek to achieve but its not just about seeking to achieve a better life, try understand to yourself what do you think a better life is, and as yourself how does it feel to have a better life, imagine how it feels, hear yourself talking in that state your working towards and it can happen over night if you decide to start thinking about what you really want for yourself and stop living because others tell you what to do or how to live.

Also side effects were huge. Weight gain, high blood pressure, fatigue, mental numbness.. Now i use a small dose, eat healthy, exercise more, and use 5-htp

With releasing your emotions through writing, though... I would do this all the time, but I would only write down my fears as realities, and it would only validate my fears. It is so important to express your fears and get them out, but it is ALSO essential that you follow that up with self care. Your fears are fears, NOT a reality. You have the power to tell yourself that. In addition to just releasing/processing anxiety sometimes, now I often like to write down affirmations that are completely contrary to my anxieties, which really helps me.

I always appreciate when Teal mentions stuff that is more personal. Like if she's a spritual teacher but still struggles with typical human things it makes me feel like I am just as capable of becoming what I admire about her in myself. Sometimes my mind puts other people on pedestals and devalues my own worth but this makes me feel like an equal. I think she's a fantastic teacher for this reason.

Nice video Teal. Lots of good advice here. I am a medical doctor and neuroscientist who also deals with an anxiety disorder in my own life so I can relate exactly to what you are saying. I believe that ALL anxiety is separation anxiety. Mostly a separation from self - the separation from self starts in childhood and is propagated by self-judgment self-blame and self-shame. This is why self care is soooo important. Knowing your history I can see how your attachment needs were not met and whats worse you were abused. So quite likely you would go into defensive detachment and separate to keep yourself "safe" - so it is likely you get nervous when you get too close, because being connected wasnt safe for you as a child. Connection to self is key, and that is what you write in Shadows Before Dawn. Quite possibly your biggest challenge, and the biggest challenge that all people with anxiety face, is maintaining that connection to self. So we resist (and our inner child sees as unsafe) the very connection and attachment we need most to heal from anxiety. Ive created a video series for people who suffer from anxiety and specifically mention and recommend Shadows Before Dawn. Its a great book. Thanks! -russ

Anxiety only improves when thinking of the anxiety. Most of the time i am incredibly afraid of getting anxiety or panic attacks, in places where i can not hide in my bed or just start crying like a baby. But that way of thinking is wrong, because i experienced those situations the whole other way. I experienced them es liberatory and they turned out to bring motivation and positive thinking. To grab a person you are confident with and knows your fears and to stand up against those fears with the help of that person, is helping me a lot. The right way ist to know and be clear about your feelings only beeing triggered by chemical responses of your body. Clearly it is more difficult that it sounds or seems, but if you keep up with this it is a huge help.

Ayahuasca cured my anxiety (and that wasn't even my intention going in). For those not partaking, it made me realize you can observe, note, and not judge emotions the same way you can do with thoughts and mindful meditation. The same way you create a quiet mind by observing (without judgement) your thoughts like clouds passing in the sky, you can cure anxiety by observing (feeling/embracing) emotions as they come without resisting. This may involve brief shaking and tingles. I realized anxiety is caused by resisting all these feelings as they come. It is very difficult embracing without resisting being an empath though, likely the reason I had such stubborn anxiety.
