Hi everyone, welcome to Abbey's Kitchen! Today I will be chatting about a topic that I have been seeing A LOT of on my social media feeds - bloating. To make sure you guys are getting the facts on this topic, I will be breaking down everything you need to know about bloating, whether the vegan diet is to blame, and the role of diet culture. I will even be bringing on Andrea Hardy, Registered Dietitian and Gut Health Expert, to gain even more clarity on this hot topic.

When I first ate low FODMAP I did get thinner, mostly due to the lack of bloating and my food becoming so boring that eating was a chore. Then I gained it back and then some when I started to figure out what I could eat and flavorful workarounds for what I couldn't (garlic infused olive oil instead of garlic). The most important part is that my mental health went from a 4 on a good day to a 7 on average, in less than three weeks. Amazing what being able to trust that food your eating will nourish you and not cause pain will do for your emotional stability and well-being.

Wow! I've just learned something! So, I have been VERY skeptical of registered dieticians for a long time. (And you are like a breath of fresh air, btw.) Reason? I've had IBS since my late teens. My mom dragged me to every doctor under the sun until I basically told her that the only way she's getting me into another doctor's office is if she knocks me out and carries me there. And one of the reasons I didn't want to go or to even attempt treatment was because doctor after doctor and dietician after dietician has told me (1) that FODMAPS foods would be off my menu FOREVER, (2) that I should stop eating gluten FOREVER even though multiple tests including a biopsy showed that I have no gluten sensitivity, and (3) that I should cut out dairy FOREVER even though I am not and have never been lactose intolerant. My 19-year-old self took a look at this list and was like "so, y'all want me to flirt with malnutrition till the day I die? I'm out!" It took me years to get my symptoms under control. One of the biggest culprits were xantham gum, guara gum, and their ilk (ya' know, the stuff that gluten free pastas are full of). I look like I'm in late stages of pregnancy every time I eat them. So, I read my labels, because that kind of bloat and that kind of pain... it's worth my time and effort to avoid that. Another culprit was my water intake. I now double my water when I increase my fiber intake: i.e. if last week I had sandwiches for lunch and this week it's Buddha bowls, better refill my water bottle 2 more times. And finally I had to accept some things as reality: (1) periods, even the fake ones on birth control will constupate me worse than a bag of chips with an ice cream chaser, (2) runners diarrhea will happen, and (3) it's okay that my tummy does not stay sunken in throughout the day--that's just life and I'm better off doing abs workouts to tighten my core than cutting out asparagus. 🤷‍♀️

Also, thankyou for clarifying about Fodmap diet because the Dr introduced this to me years ago and I literally sprinted from the office as he made it out to be a long term thing rather than a short term elimination process. I think it's important that Medical Drs clarify this.

I have IBS and know that I should try a FODMAP diet, however I also know myself and I can get very very obsessive over my eating if I let myself get there. I’ve been so fearful of trying the diet, so learning that there is a gentle FODMAP diet was INCREDIBLE. I can’t thank you enough for providing this information, it has the potential to really help me physically without being difficult mentally and emotionally

I have found that my IBS flares up (and therefore bloating too) when I eat certain grains, specifically corn, quinoa, and amaranth. Brown rice also occasionally causes symptoms for me. Corn is the worst and I’ve basically cut it out of my diet and feel a lot better for it. It can be a bit hard to avoid, but for me it’s worth it to not feel absolutely miserable. Oddly, wheat and I get along just fine. When I first had IBS everyone I knew was pressuring me to go gluten free but I was tested for Celiac and it came back negative and I had never had problems with wheat before. I’m glad that I’m not gluten free.

Hi Abby. I recently discovered your channel and the information you have provided has been highly beneficial to me. I struggled with an ED for many years of my life. I have been in recovery for about for a few years. My triggers are still very much present. Although I don't act on them. I have really been struggling due to the fact I am so easily triggered. I purged my IG completely and go on FB occasionally only to retrieve specific messages As Im sure you know of the health risks that come along with having an ED. Especially at a young age. I developed pre existing medical complications I may not have had otherwise such as increased anxiety and depression, epilepsy, osteoporosis, major digestive issues. During that time I also suffered two cardiac arrest and countless emergency situations due to the deficiencies in my diet. At one point I had to be in a wheelchair being at such high risk for heart failure and too weak to stand. I had to get picked up to get into my wheelchair The physical complications have improved significantly and are continuing to improve after a long battle with weight restoration as a result of refeeding syndrome. I have been tapering off of my medication for just over a year. I'm now just trying to adapt to living again. Anyways, that's just a small portion of my story. I really do plan to share it when the time is appropriate in my recovery journey. I want to inform people of what an ED really looks like from my experience. I want to show the real version rather than this glamourized notion of narcism people associate with eating disorders. That in which can often be more harmful and triggering. I am sending this message to thank you for what you do. There is also another reason. I need to speak up about something to someone on RU-vid that has fronts ethics. There is a girl with a platform of about 2.5 million subs. She has been on RU-vid for several years. She is known for her Try on hauls and intentionally exposing as much of her skeletal ever deteriorating body. She was practically in the state I was in when I was in a hospital with IVs and doctors, etc. She Denied ED claims for years. I believe she is 26 or 27. She still lives with her parents and they were taking no action. Her mom was actually filming her or in her videos many times. It came to friends having to go to the extent of tricking her and getting her into an intervention setting. She then was taken against her will. Now a year later she is in the same place, now with no friends making videos in her pink bedroom playing dress up and talking in the pitch of an eight year old about Disney and Pokemon. This concerns me. When she had returned to RU-vid he wore clothes that were a little bit baggier than usual. I could tell she was still extremely thin, but her faced looked a lot healthier. Her comments were full of encouragement and positivity. Telling someone in that state of recovery that they look healthy in their mind the person saying they are fatter. It was wayyyy too soon to her returning to RU-vid. Even though it is clear she is regressing people are sending her comments saying how she strong she is and telling her she is doing so well. She did an collab with Katie Morton which was completely unethical. f if don't know who Katie is there is a video on her channel and Eugeni Then there are the comments calling out her weight loss. Eating Disorders don't go away over night, which is something most people don't know. Her over exaggerating positivity is sending people the wrong message and puts the ED community to shame. She knows exactly the message she is sending and who her audience is. RU-vid is spoon-feeding her content. I unsubscribed and her videos are somehow being promoted to me. It has had a massively negative impact on me even at this point in my recovery. I can only imagine what it's doing to people stuck in their disorder and young girls accross the globe! There was a petition to have her deplatformed for her to return after taking the time to sort out her health. The sister of a young girl who was a fan of Eugenia. From the time she started watching Eugenia she developed an ED and as a result passed away. There were many others who spoke up but RU-vid never stepped in. There are so many videos made about her. All her old videos are still up. If you see a couple of videos you will see what I am saying. Is there anything that can be done? Could you make a video in relevance to this. Even if you don't name her....

As someone who’s been vegan for about 15 years, I recommend doing micro amounts of foods like beans and legumes at first then gradually adding more, the suggestion Abbey made about making a few changes at time is also great. I find how you are or aren’t affected by switching to a vegan or plant based diet may also depend on what your diet was like before the switch, were you coming from a very processed diet or a higher fibre more diverse diet, each will take a different amount of time to adapt and adjust.

It's interesting as I've noticed lots of ''influencers'' often complaining about bloating so all of the sudden they self diagnose themselves as being intolerant to something as an excuse to restrict it from their diet.
@SillyFREAKout
@SillyFREAKout 4 года назад
Evangelia Triliouri while I believe some people do overestimate their intolerances, l wouldn’t say this is true for the majority. Health “influencers” are generally more in tune with their body’s cues and feeling because they simply pay attention more. When paying more attention, it’s easier to notice when something doesn’t feel or react right. Most people are intolerant to a few things and don’t even know it because they’re used to feeling like crap all the time. Sadly a lot of people just don’t know how good they are supposed/could feel. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with choosing not to eat a food, or a group of foods, that don’t make them feel good. Again I’m not saying what you’re saying doesn’t happen, but I wouldn’t scoff at every influencer you see that claims they’re intolerant!

it's really interesting to hear about the guidelines to following a low FODMAP diet because i went to a gastro specialist and got a colonoscopy and endoscopy done and he ended up finding nothing so he diagnosed me with IBS. he told me to try the low FODMAP diet, but he never once mentioned i should do it under the supervision of a nutritionist (he actually said i can just look it up and do it myself) and he knows that i struggle with disordered eating and never mentioned any warning.
@827honey1
@827honey1 4 года назад
That was completely bad advice because everything I read about low fodmap says that it should be done under the care of a dietitian in order to avoid nutritional deficiencies and is short term to pinpoint what the underlying problematic foods are to decide whether it should be avoided, eaten in certain amounts or other strategies that can be used.

Okay LOVED this video. My best friend did FODMAP a few years ago to explore some of her food allergies, but found some really cool alternatives throughout the journey. She swaps garlic for garlic infused olive oil and it makes a big difference for her stomach issues. Would love to see you do a recipe video for people trying FODMAP elimination. Also as a vegan, I sadly cut out sparkling water and it made a big difference with "bloating" or whatever you want to call it. After about a year or so my body has gotten used to eating a higher fiber diet and I'm totally fine now. I think a lot of vegan youtubers who have gut problems aren't eating consistently or are doing to many juice fasts *insert eye roll here*.

What an informative, great video! I don't have much issue with fiber as vegan, and i get really tons of it as everything i eat is whole grain (bread,pasta,rice,etc.). But i always keep on having bloating/gas with certain dried fruits, especially apricots. So i just avoid them like plague :)

Thanks for that video I've always been bloated, but even more after becoming vegan (like it hurts now), but I also start University at the same moment. I blame University because it's always way worst at the end of the semesters. Doing more sports helped me a lot also, the worst of all was during my first month of pregnancy. Arriving at the end of the first trimester, I feel way better, almost not bloated! So I recommand exercice, avoiding stress (like going to shcool) and getting pregnant, but skip the begining.

I appreciate you tackling this, because I have a lot of belly/visceral fat I'm working on losing for my health, but some of these videos have gotten to me a little and had me wondering if there might be a food intolerance or something going on. I have never been bloated on a vegan diet since 2 years ago when I started, also after 1-2 years of reducing every some months the different animal products I used to eat and adding new ones as a replacement. But i honestly think that maybe it is because since I was a kid my parents fed me with a mostly plant based diet with animal products as a side and not as the main dish, and not even eating them every day, and also following these diet in my adult life until I changed. So my digestive system has always been used to these foods and did not get stressed with the gradual change i did and the increased fibre intake and obviously with my current vegan diet. Anyway nice video and very informative, thanks.

I had a toupet fundoplication surgery so no longer have a fundus as that was used to reinforce my Les. Since then I seem to have endless gas. (Which was expected side effect.) My doctor presumes most of my gas is caused by intestinal gas from my stool as you mentioned as one culprit for gas. I’m trying to find the right fiber and balance to help me go without causing gas. I like how you mention it’s a balance of not too much or too little fiber. As I almost feel like the advice I hear is either increase fiber or a no or low fiber diet.

If it helps at all: I've been diagnosed with GERD 2 years ago. I used to be on acid blockers until I found out what works for me, and ever since changing lifestyle my symptoms have now been under control. I no longer eat pills, only the occasional chewing pill. I don't drink soda, I don't eat fatty and spicy foods. I make sure to eat slowly, chew my food properly, and not over eat. I avoid eating 3 hours before bed time. Overall I live a more active lifestyle, and weightloss has helped a lot.

@@AbbeysKitchen I just got back from the local grocery store, and while the supply chain is reported to be intact, they were out of some products. A person inclined to do all their shopping for a few weeks in one go would like to know that the following products were out: no-refrigeration needed oat milk and soy milk, dinner sausage, cabbage, eggs. Things they did have that I was happy about: coffee, other coffee, popsicles, frozen dumplings, canned vegetables, canned beans, many potato chips, other chips, salsa. (Sandwich bread has been intermittently unavailable, but I purchased a loaf from their in-store bakery no problem and it was on sale.) Looking around other emergency preparedness websites, I found suggestions for things like pop tarts, because they are comforting and shelf stable. I’m a little trigger happy with the emergency preparedness, and I purchased canned milk, canned tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, and a bunch of junk food that I already ate. I had frozen fruit and baking mixes or I would have gotten that. The NYTimes reported that these items have been bought far in excess of usual quantities: rice, dried beans, bottled water, peanut butter, oat milk, pasta, and pretzels. (Why pretzels? Who sequesters themselves with pretzels? Why do you hate yourself?) I was reassured to read that distributors can redirect food from specific partners that no longer need them, like cruise ships or restaurants, to groceries. They also stockpile food for holidays or whatever reason, so the supply isn’t dependent upon an unbroken chain all the way back to the producer.

At first for sure. For some people it absolutely can. But it sorts out once you microbiom changes and adapts. That’s why going vegan over night might not be the best idea 😅 Personally foodmaps never created a problem for me. On the other hand dairy, meat and fast food always screwed up my digestion and cause bloating. Since I went vegan it very rarely happens. Again mostly with heavy processed and fast food.
@kiterafrey
@kiterafrey 4 года назад
It also can be mentally hard to go vegan overnight. People who attempt any change overnight might feel guilty if they make a mistake & go on a guilt binge then give up. I’ve found cutting slowly to vegan is best. Starting with cutting red meat, the going pescatarian, then vegetarian, then vegan. It can also help to start with vegan replacement foods while slowly adding in meals without faux bacon or faux cheese to reach a good balance.
@lilithnox5955
@lilithnox5955 4 года назад
Katherine Petersorf well I went vegan overnight to be honest. But I am a realist. A lot of people do the mistake of trying to go all perfect. There is no such thing. No matter what you do. Today it is sooooo much easier to do it. But i think for body reasons it is better to give yourself time. Also cutting meat is not hard for most people. It is usually dairy product that are the hardest 😅

Overeating is a thing, also as a vegan. My digestion gets used to plant based in 1-2 weeks but still having a big load of fiber, protein and starches, carbs isn't easy to digest. You feel it laying in bed. Also having a mid to big load of alcohol at Friday's or Saturdays have huge influence on digestion. It's like throwing your gut microbiome back for weeks. Pretty sad, bad digestion makes me depressed. Eat normal portions, stop alcohol, you will be fine sooner or later.

As a vegan of 24 years this summer (and a follower of yours!), my mind is sort of blown that this went on for nearly thirty minutes, and the simplest, easiest thing to try was never mentioned: look at your water intake. When piling in a bunch more fiber, even a vegan of nearly a quarter of a century (who may have gone on a kale salad bender when they got super trendy) may experience excess bloating. Something needs to help get all that fiber through. Many people transitioning to plant based diets go from low-water and low-fiber to high fiber and still low water. It may not be as deep as all this - if you’re not even finishing a liter a day and you’re eating a ton of fiber, you’re going to have a problem. 💨 🤰🏻

Raquel Evita Saraswati agreed! It’s amazing how many issues can be resolved by upper your water intake (especially if you can add trace minerals into it so you’re not just flushing your system with overly filtered water). I definitely can relate to that kale salad bender too lol

I rarely experience bloating, thankfully, that is until I decided to eat vegan for eight weeks. I planned my meals, snacks and eagerly started. The food was fine, delicious and filling but I started bloating. It was uncomfortable enough for me to use probiotics, very little help, and the bloating became painful. I was in pain all day, making me unproductive and grouchy. I decided to stop my vegan trial and my bloating ended and hasn’t returned. I still enjoy plant-based meals regularly, just not exclusively.

Every plant based diet will require a regular bowel cleansing: So, take at least every second day early in the morning on an empty stomach 1 tablespoon (15 ml) castor oil in order to prevent an intestinal blockage, for in the case that you will eat a lot of fruits or vegetables your large intestine will be really filled and you will remark this one occasionally unpleasant, this especially during the night.

Anyone curious about the antidepressant thing, there is actually evidence of this that also goes with why stress triggers digestive issues. There is actually a lot of serotonin receptors in the gut. There is more research to be done but that does contribute to why it happens. I've also heard it happening the other way for people that take medication for digestive problems also see improvements in depression symptoms!

Anecdotal, but I had sibo for about 2 years. In late 2018 I made the connection that after eating vegetables - I would eat several cups of sauteed zucchini, chard in soup, carrots, and salad greens every dinner - made me feel horrible. removed all vegetables, and within three days by boating was 80% reduced. But I upped my fruit, cherries, apples, grapes. I felt horrible again, then I read about fructose malasorption and the fructose-to-glucose ratio and about fodmaps and fructans, and I cut out all fruit too. I have been no fruit, no vegetables for over a year and I never thought I would be able to eat and not feel sick and bloated but I can :) I still react if I eat anything with even dried celery in it.

I experienced no bloating if you're constantly vegan for about quite a time (6-8 month for minimum) - To digest just plantbased food, and therefore a huge amount of these as the gut is yet familiar with, you're gutflora needs to adapt to this and besides that the rest of the bacteria, which are not needed anymore aren't really happy about loosing their job and their "food". The bacterias who wants to digest the huge amount of greens and new food (soy and more cereals, lentils and so on) are absolutely overworked and the others are starting a revolution... Imagine this szene in your tummy 😅 it needs time to get rid of the no more needed flora and to establish the new needed gutflora. Especially if you like to be a parttime vegan you will constantly ask your gut to do work which it's obviously not prepared for... Some people say, that this is one of the reasons they're quitting the vegan diet. I highly recommend to try it at least 3 better 6 month without exception. And help your gut with pre and probiotics. Try Inulin, good and healthy foods, avoiding processed ingredients, if you can afford it, try to stick to whole and organic foods. It is worthy! I'm vegan for over a decade now and I'm eating mostly raw mixed with cooked legumes, fermented foods and I can digest raw broccoli and kale with a huge portion of lentils and you will not hear one thing 😜 I just adjusted my gut to these kind of diet, but I have to say, I did need my time for this ... Abbey, I'm curious, you aren't vegan and may never will be, where do you get your personal experience about eating constantly vegan? I needed more than 2 years to get a clear line so I can say my gutflora now is stable and has totally changed. (Excuse my English, I'm from Germany now living in Switzerland such a tough combo 😂) Have a nice day 🙏
