Everybody wants to kill their weeds and Broad leaves in the yard then complain about global warming. LOL. Man-made grass is the first grass that will die in the hot summer. I just cut my weeds and it all looks green. Dandelion greens are good fried up in a stir fry
Two questions. First: Is the Borax treatment harmful to my doggie and my soon to be chickens? Or can I just keep them away from the area for the hour of time you recommend waiting afterwards? (Same question for the lawn weed killer.) Second: Do you know if this will work for Virginia Creeper? I had never heard of that plant until I moved to coastal NC and it's all over the ground in a back area of my yard. I love plants so much but I am not too sure I love invasive species like Virgina Creeper. Thank you for a great video (even though I'm a late bloomer to your channel...LOL). Off to watch the second one now. New subscriber! :)
took you six years!!!?? took mine 3 months!!! (pennsylvania) The lawn used to be a beautiful sight. The past couple of weeks, its now almost covered in this mess!
I have two selective herbicides. "Q4 Plus" with 2,4, dimethylamine salt. and "4-Speed XT" with 2,4, Dichloroophenoxyacetic Acid. Which is the correct one, if any? They both have Dicamba. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Dave
Times have changed. "In the past, borax (boron) was a product recommended for eradicating creeping charlie. However, research has shown that the addition of boron to soil, even in very small amounts, can create an unfavorable growing environment, and make it difficult to re-establish lawn grass. Also, this is an illegal application." Sep. 1, 2019
Question that hasn't been answered elsewhere - - will it kill this plant to weed whack very low to the ground, chopping all leaves off the charlie? I did this in one section of my lawn and I'm wondering if it's going to come back just as quickly. It does expose roots easier.
I can't wait to try this. My lawn is covered in ground Ivy. I live in Canada and can't get most of the weed killers the US has. So thank you for this video!
@@claytonchristensen6273 so it burnt of most of the ground Ivy which was great because it slowed down the growth. I did exactly what he said borax and water first then a weed killer (I used weed b gon but don't use weed b gon max it's garbage). I did this last year and the ground ivy was much better this year.
IT WORKED TY TY TY. Been trying to get rid of this for years. Been taking over more and more. Finally Stopped it. Although i did put a bit too much weed killer after in some spots hurt some grass. No problem it's zoysia and will repair itself lol.
Not sure if I had Creeping Charlie or some other kind of leafy ground Ivy that was taking over my yard. I tried different weed killers but they would not touch this stuff. I then used this method and it did WORK! Yes! Thank you so much for this helpful video.
I spent the whole summer pulling all my creeping charlie out of my yard by hand & i had alot of it.. now there's no more growing & my yard looks awesome..
Will a pump sprayer work for this application? I have creeping charlie all over the place this year. It was never so bad! Lots of weird stuff this year with weeds. On the other hand, the majority of my grass is doing well, but the specific problem areas are bigger problems this year than any year before. PS, I know you lived in Chicagoland during the time when this video was filmed. I live in northwest Indiana, so our environmental conditions will be relatively the same.
According to one Michigan State U study, the borax does not work, although the earlier Iowa State U study showed certain effectiveness of using borax. The success of this RU-vid to kill the ground ivy (creeping charlie) is because of using the effective 2-4D weedkiller with dicamba. In short, the use of borax may be a just a waste of your time, as usin 2-4D dicamba is already effective.
Reading the MSDS for a Dicamba product shows you need an apron for mixing, long pants, long sleeves, chemical resistant gloves, a mask and goggles. It is highly corrosive. Wear the PPE when applying!
Don't you just love when you move into a new house, with a troubled salad bar lawn and see creeping charlie everywhere - you remember 2+ years ago watching LCN's series on how to use, and you remember the Borax but you go back and re-watch the video series anyways and get treated with some sweet green screen action and the old music.... That old music though - every time I hear it, just makes me want to get out in the lawn.
I love all of your videos, i'm in the middle of a lawn care nut marathon enjoying a heineken. Of course, I'm on my porch looking at how amazing my lawn is starting to look after your amazing videos. Thank you so much for putting these out, I'm one seriously happy lawn care nut apprentice !!!
Great video I appreciate your time you spend making these videos. I have creeping Charlie (ground Ivy) Just got my house about a year ago, and it has spread to the entire lawn. Instead of using that spray bottle and going over my entire lawn, is there another way to do it? I know you want a fine mist, but looking as it takes me an hour to just cut my lawn, I may be out there just spraying for 2. Any help or ideas are appreciated. Thanks again. +The Lawn Care Nut
This video came at a perfect time, the lawn of our new house is covered with Charlie. Can't wait for Video 2! Going to integrate this with your fall recovery plan. Thanks for the videos, great stuff.
glad it helped! and actually, the second video will show that I did not need anymore applications. the charlie is 100% gone from that area now. just took a little longer. :)
Hey allyn I have a client that has alot of, I think it is purple ivy it is tall and has purple buds at the tips, is it the same method to get rid of that also? Thank you for the videos I have learned a ton
I would get armpump in like 2 minutes trying to spray my whole lawn with a trigger-sprayer. I'll be using a garden-sprayer on fine mist setting, thanks...
It best to get better quality herbicide with higher concentrations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic and Triclopyr, like Crossbow or TZone. Big box companies like ortho usually have more watered down concentrations of these chemicals. Make sure you wear gloves and probably best to wear a respirator if you are spraying large areas
I tried Borax once and about killed my grass - turned it yellow. However, I just saw this video (2021) and didn't dilute the borax at 5oz/gal water. I think you have to be very careful because that stuff stays in the ground. Does the Lawn Care Nut regret pushing Borax as a solution? Strangely enough, I'm going to go ahead and try this method simply because I TRUST the Lawn Care Nut. Here's hoping.
Great Vid. My Bermuda in the rear yard has been overtaken by this stuff and it would take me forever to fine spray due to the area volume. You think a sprayer at the highest spray setting would work for the Borax? Thanks in advance.
LCN, do you have a series or advise for wild thyme? I live in the Adirondack Mountains, and this stuff is starting to take my lawn with a vengeance since last year! Please help.
Hey Allyn! I've been reading around the internet and I read that if you dethatch your lawn in the fall It should pull up the runners of creeping Charlie. Does this work or this just a myth with dethatching with Creeping Charlie?
Hey Allyn thank you for the great video (s). Was curious, i have some patches of ivy, but also wanted to seed fertilize etc, and would need to water? What do you recommend, deal with ivy, wait then seed, or seed at same time and just avoid the ivy area with the seeding and watering? Tks again
Consistent pulling them out and placing grass clippings, branches and placing them on top of the area has worked for me. Weed killer, vinegar etc has not worked.
I have 2 acres of land of which half is turf area. We've used local contractors to kill weeds (Weed Man for one) for years who neglected the work (I caught their employees park in our drive way for half hour and drove off) and caused our turf to be overtaken by weeds. I then hired a different contractor and used them for two years but they have not been able to make a difference and told me they couldn't get the solution to rid of the creeping charlie (new strand of weed in the area apparently) and that I should just scrape off everything and start a new. Not only will this cost a fortune given the land mass, I don't trust these contractors anymore and decided to take matters into my own hands. I spent days researching for the solution (I didn't even know what the weed was called) online and stumbled upon your video. Thank you and will give the technique a try and prey it works! Question 1: You recommend the 20 Mule Team Borax "detergent booster & multi-purpose household cleaner". I am in process of ordering the pump sprayer (4 Gal backpack), and Borax online (Amazon.ca), I found the one (identical package as your video) for C$75.73 plus shipping (76oz). One of the comments directed me to purchasing the same at Walmart Canada, it costs C$5.77 (1.84kg), same brand but different colour box that says "nature's freshener". Are these same or different and can I use either one for the job? Question 2: Can I use the 4 Gal pump sprayer for the job instead of a fine mist spray bottle you suggested since I am dealing with half acre of affected area? One of the purchasers of the pump sprayer said his machine got clogged up using powder mix (non-liquid) after first use. Can I mix the solution in a bucket and dissolve it completely before pouring into the machine? Please help! FYI, I live in northern part of Quebec province and we get extreme temperature changes from below freezing level to 25C until June 1. I watched your 2017 video. My plan is to get rid of the weeds, replenish the soil, seed......
Thanks for the suggestion. I have an infestation of Bleeping Charlie. Trying it first without the Borax, just a Dicamba-type herbicide. My uninformed worry is that if. the CC gets injured by the Borax, then it will be less likely to absorb / ingest the herbicide. We'll see.
@@TheTurbomopar Sorry, I had forgotten about my post. Happy news. The procedure worked great, even without the borax. I made first application around Sept , which in our area is when grass is coming out of summer dormancy. The kill was gradual, but this spring I have very little remaining CC. I'd say I killed more than 95%. My wife calls it bleeping charlie. Our habitat is western Cascades foothills. The product was Weedmaster, a mix of 2,4,D, dicamba and some other stuff.
Credit to this tip. I've fought this weed for years and even with professional lawn treatment it just keeps spreading. Applied the mule team and within a week the areas I hit hard are brown and dead. The areas with medium coverage are curling up. Applied the 2-4-D today and hope to see even more results. This is a great plan
I would add not to spray the lawn if the temp is over 85, or raining, best early morning while the dew is on the grass, it will soak up the chemical better , or right after sun down, low wind condition's, follow up with a pre emergent herbicide
Can I try this method now or only in spring? It's about 90 degrees here in Chicago. I just put down some Milorganite. How long should I wait until I try this method? Thanks.
I do not see listed which weed killer you mixed in the pump sprayer to get rid of the creeping charlie. We have it all over our lawn and I am headed to walmart to find the weed killing item with 24D & Dicamba that you mentioned to mix in the pump sprayer? What am I looking for? Brand?
Hi. I have creeping charlie on my turf. We in canada can't use 2 4d. Can I use this borax solution to kill weed alone ? Without 2 4d ? After how long I can re apply it. Or it will get too strong and can kill lawn too...
I tried a 100 square foot test area last year using your Borax solution and Weed B Gone. It worked great! I have more Creeping Charlie this year that I need to treat. The only problem I have is diluting the borax so it doesn't clog my sprayer. Do you use hot water to dissolve it? Thanks!
Stupid question but here goes, I don’t own a dietitian scale so how would I measure out 5 oz? I do own measuring cups and spoons, does 5oz equate to a certain measurement in cups?
Just an FYI all studies done on Borax vs Creeping Charlie show that the damage potential to your lawn far out weigh it's use as a weed killer. Boron (Borax) does not break down in the soil!
Im using TruGreen right now. After 2 treatments the crewping charlie looks like its getting worse. Is this treatment compatable with the TruGreen treatment?
Can you use a backpack sprayer for larger areas of creeping charlie or will that be too much for the grass? How long would you suggest waiting on putting down grass seed after treating for creeping charlie?
I live in Alberta, Canada. I've been told that I cannot access borax in Canada? ? I have a creeping charlie problem and need to know what to use to get rid of it once and for all.
I have borax but I am scared to use it as I don't want poison in the soil and also the dog and cats might get poisoned. The neighbor grass crawled all over the electric wires.
Clover is not a problem. It adds nitrogen to the soil and creates soil life. Listen to mother nature. Don't destroy her - by trying to grow the grass that is killing our planet just by "maintaining" it.
Mirla Lacen don't think getting rid of clover in my lawn will destroy the world. Plenty of wild clover growing on the river Banks and along the highways in Nebraska!
Mirla Lacen who the hell is putting toxins on my yard? I have pets and kids/ grandkids that play in my yard. Getting tired of people deciding what is right or wrong for my home and family. I want a nice looking lawn the kids can play on! I do habitat restoration on a couple miles of land that the company I worked for own. Plenty of wild clover and natural grasses and other forage for the critters. We put out food plots and get old corn from grain elevators for deer and birds. We think the predators every fall and winter to keep a good balance between predators and prey. We've raised quail and released them there. We've stocked the ponds with fish. I don't think we've damaged mother nature here by mowing or taking care of our lawns!
Just a mistake I made I want to pass on- if you use your hand can for the borax it will clog the tip. Clears easy enough but you gotta use that ZEP style bottle. My CC is on the ropes though.
We have a rather large area of creeping charlie not located in our lawn. Can we use something larger to apply the borax mixture other than a spray bottle?
Allyn, I am getting ready to do a Soil Quality Restoration on my yard this fall to deep aerate to 4" and then cover with compost 1/2" thick across the entire yard. Will this introduce the ability for weeds to start growing or should I do anything in preparation or follow up to the SQR? Thank you, love the vids!! Mark
That's not really a service I've ever performed before. Typically I'm not a fan of topdressing with compost like that as you can't control the levels of nutrients being introduced. My plan would be to just aerate the lawn normally and apply a big fat dose of Milo. similar results, more consistent
Is Milo something that I need to get at a Farm store of some kind or is it readily available? I couldn't find any information on it when I did a quick search. Thank you Allyn.
Alllyn, last year I did a deep core aeration with top dress of compost and over seeding to try and get my yard thicker. This year I started off with putting down some 19-0-4 fert followed by another over seeding and starter fert about 2 weeks later. It has green'd up but I am still not seeing the thickening I had hoped for. I have Milo and was going to put that down but didn't know if it was too early? I am in Iowa. Does it sound like I need to do more than just Milo? Thank you so much, Mark
I tried mixing Borax and water, and that stuff refused to dissolve! It plugged the spray bottle and was really quite a mess. I like your videos but this did not work for me.
I just use Ortho Weed-B-Gon for clover and oxalis. The bottle with the purple label. The instructions say mix 1 oz per gallon of H20. I mix 2 oz per gallon in my backpack sprayer and soak Charlie good. Charlie's dead now......
