When my husband was a little guy, some 60 years ago, he would visit an older German neighbor. This man had a bountiful garden and he would dry the surplus vegetables on racks in the sunshine. When the veggies were dry, he would run them through his old crank meat grinder, the kind that clamped to a table. He stored the granules in glass jars and made soup and stews all winter long.

Thanks for sharing. I am from Norway and I just started dehydrating apples..there are lots and lots of apples here and most of it are wasted. I like my apples crispy, so after dehydrating them I put them in the oven at 100 C for 10 minutes to make them crispy. Store them in the jar with silica pockets..yummy!! Faaaaar better than potato chips!

I advise heating the silica gel packets to dry them prior to use since they do absorb moisture only up to their capacity and then need regenerated at 250 deg F for a few hours. I am not sure what temperature the packaging materials can take, but the silica pellets themselves can easily withstand 300 deg F. You can also empty the packets, collect the silica gel, dry it all at once and store in a jar for use. I am a chemist and the silica gel at worst may irritate your skin (just as sand can). I have worked with bulk silica gel (multiple pounds at a time) for decades -- we never needed to wear gloves or masks, except maybe a dust mask if we were pouring 55 gallon drums of it.

You can also purchase color-changing varieties in bulk. I make my own packets by adding the pellets to tea bags (also sold in bulk) and stapling them shut. I can still make out the orange tint when they're good. After a few uses, the pellets look darker and they go back in the oven for a few hours at 250F.

Hi Christa! New to your channel (sub for about 2 months now) and I love these videos - detailed, educational, so helpful, and you always have a smile on your face. One tip I would mention is this: Make sure your desiccant/silica packs are rated safe for food. Not all of them that you get w shoes or bags are safe for food. Obviously, if the pack comes with medicine, then its food safe. Just to play it safe, I got a bag of 100 2g food safe desiccant packs on Amazon for less than $10. I was going to do a lot of dehydrating so it was easier to get them this way! Have a great day and thanks for sharing these with us all!!!

I get so many silica packets each month in certain medicine bottles. I've been saving them for my watercoloring (sprinkled into wet paint) which gives a great texture when dry, but now I will use them for storing my dried cranberries and grapes. I LOVE dried bananas and have 3 very ripe pineapples sitting on my counter as I try to think of something besides cake to use them in. Now, after watching this, I'm going to dry them and use a sweet treats later. I bet they would also be good in fruit cake this Christmas.

I have used a digital Presto dehydrator for eight years with great results. It came with mesh tray inserts for smaller foods and also leather trays. I dehydrate just about any fruit or vegetable! One of my favorites is to slice cantaloupe thin and sprinkle it with Asian seasoning before drying. It's delicious! I made "taffy" out of muscadine juice...that was good! I mostly do peppers, onions, tomatoes, celery, apples, peaches, pineapple, bananas, mushrooms, and kale! I keep that for adding to my dog's food. Broccoli, you name it! It's a wonderful way to preserve food!

cranberries, blueberries, and grapes all have a waxy coating on the skin. It is often recommended that you pour boiling water over them to open that coating and crack the skins in such a way that the air can get in in the most you can get out. To clarify, you don't need to boil the fruit, you just need to pour boiling water over it and let it sit a few minutes. Take the food out of the boiling water and spread it on the trays.

The silica packets..the thought have is: be careful, as many items like importet bags, shoes and what not that you buy and have these silicas, might also be sprayed with some poisin agianst foreign bugs! Therefore I hesitate putting them bags into my foodstorage! (Exept silicabags from inside empty supplement containers...) maybe some rice would help keep dry?? Like some put rice in salt to keep it dry???

I managed to catch a clearance sale of an older model Excalibur dehydrator. I no longer live in a home where I can have a vegetable garden. I bought one of those corer/slicers for pineapples and made some pineapples rings to dehydrate. It didnt last long with my adult kids, my young grandchildren and myself. It made a wonderful snack. This year I was blessed with an abundance of zucchini, from my daughter's garden. I dehydrated slices then vacuume sealed them. We're trying a different shape this time; diced, a little large. It should be great for soups and other dishes.

Hi Christi, I just recently dehydrated some pink lady apples, I brushed them with a little fresh lemon juice and left them overnight and into the next day... They crispened up beautifully, I cut them across - ways so each piece showed a little star(with pips) I shared them around with friends and family, everyone loved them... They had a lovely sweet and tangy flavour to them... And my sister, who is normally allergic to dried apples because they contain Sulphur..., was able to enjoy handfuls of my apples and had no reactions or allergies from them... My family said they were the best dried apples they had tasted😊 I did store some as well using glass jars, and will also look for and keep those sachets from now on as well. Thanks and God bless. Love your work😍

When I was looking into food storage systems - I researched dehydrating. Also canning. But freeze drying is the best system for long term food storage. I invested into a Harvest Right home freeze dryer. Yes they can be a bit expensive, but the ROI is about 6 months when compared to buying freeze dried foods. Both canning and dehydrating uses a heat process that degrades some of the foods nutrients and flavors. With freeze drying all the nutrients and flavors are preserved. I especially like putting up my own home cooked meals - I know what's in them and I know that I'll like it. I highly recommend the Harvest Right freeze dryer to everyone. The do have a payment plan as well.

Christa, a new sub here. Congratulations on a wonderful channel! So nice to hear someone excited about sharing their knowledge AND faith in Jesus. The only thing I would add about the silica gel packs is that they likely will not absorb a great deal of moisture once they have been exposed to the air such as in a new pair of shoes. If this method is working for you that is excellent as I too hate to waste anything. However, for anyone looking for a more robust or maybe 100% reliable moisture control method you can buy the silica gel packs brand new on Amazon for around $10 for 50 1 ounce packs and they come SEALED so you know they will be at their absolute best for absorbing moisture. God Bless Christa and keep up that 1000 watt smile!

Great video. Only thing I'd say is that you can buy 200 count of desiccant packets on Amazon for $12. I would buy that and have a supply sitting by. Since they are "rechargeable" I don't think you'd need more that 200 so it's a one time buy, plus you don't have to worry about scrapping packets from shoe boxes, which might contain traces of other peoples' feet and the industrial processes involved in the products.

Dehydrated tomatoes are great. Grocery store tomatoes that are bland turn into the most amazing tasting dried tomatoes. But they need to be sliced thicker to work best. Overripe bananas turn into chewy banana crack! I can’t stop eating the bananas. Asian persimmons are awesome and my leftover thanksgiving homemade cranberry sauce made the most delectable fruit leather! I am also dehydrating onions and garlic. They will be ground into powder. Herbs are excellent in here too. My ultimate goal will be jerky.

Does the house smell too strongly when dehydrating onions? I've heard of people saying it's too strong indoors and they do it outside.

What was the item you said some of these fruits could be used in? I did not catch or recognize the name. Could you also show how to rehydrate, and some examples of how to use the rehydrated fruit? So much thanks.

How do you store your dehydrated fruit? Do you vacuum packet so it will last longer. What kind of shelflife does dehydrated fruit have if it is vacuum packed

have not done cranberries but with blueberries and grapes I put berries in bowl and use my meat tenderizer to stab through them and then rake them down on dehydrator. it leaves a hole for evaporation. thanks, going to have to do cranberries. question have you tried slightly blanching them first or do you prefer your method thanks
