I will certainly be watching this series with intent! I am always at pains trying to get a good fit up. While I don't have a surface grinder or mill, i can see how this will be transposable to my technology. Thankyou for the video! I look forward to part 2!

It's like you can read my mind. Was just complaining about gap in a fit up last night. Never even thought to use my file guide in my mill. Great video!

A "twofer" video day? I'll take it! Hah. I'd really be interested in seeing how to cleanly do the shoulder on the sides of the tang with a file because I actually seem to have a bit of trouble even doing the usual tang/ricasso shoulders with a file without there being something that always seems to not quite be all the way removed when testing guard fit, even when using EDM stones to clean up after the file, so I just use my disc or belt grinder as you did here. I'm not sure who it was, maybe Jerry Fisk or Lin Rhea, but I remember either reading or watching something years ago where somebody mentioned the need of using a small graver bit (just with their hand) to kinda carve off the last little bit from the sides of the tang, otherwise it wouldn't fit properly, or something along those line. I just remember it left an impression on me at the time that it would be too much trouble to even attempt lol. But yea, I'd definitely like to be able to fit a guard this way without a mill or surface grinder and such. Do you also plan on using your engraver to inlet the top of the guard a bit up over the ricasso like you often do, or is just one way or the other, but not both (either milling around the tang as you did here or just in-letting the guard)? Thanks for sharing and also for your patience in all the question I tend to ask ;)

ok! you r master smith, i really like your art. you have a lot of skill, you have a lot of different machine or something else. if you had not had specific machines what would you have done? for example lack of milling machine.

without a milling machine i would use a drill press and files to make the slots for my guards.

Kyle will your mill accept collets in the spindle? All your videos are so interesting. Thanks for sharing.

This blade is huge. Where does one draw the line between a dagger and a short sword?
