This is how I make my pommel nuts for most of my knives. I am working on my dagger I've been working on for the past few weeks.

So, I’ve met other “master” blade smiths and seen them work, and they’re all very good. When I try to describe the difference between them and you, the term Rembrandt comes up a lot. (Not to give you a big head or anything.) Thanks for sharing your skills; I’ve learned a lot over the years.

Thanks dude! You gave me a great idea for the pummel. I couldn’t figure out how I was going to pull off a pummel until I watched this video.

Always great content. Looks almost like a hornet's stinger, I think it'll look great when everything shaped. Thanks for sharing! Also want to say thanks to Josh, I don't think I'd be able to hold a camera to record something for that long, or let alone all the editing you do and how fast you're turning out these vids, so just know that your work is also really appreciated!

Great video, and great piece of work, but why you machine round detail out of square stock? In term of drill bit size for the thread, I think this info could be found in the special table, so you don't have to make the measurements every time. In general I think this nut could be done on the lathe from start to finish, easier and faster.

Why don't you start with round stock and do all the operations on the lathe? I have yet to try a takedown knife. Most of mine are full tang with a couple of hidden tangs. Full tangs are a lot of work as I always put a distal taper on mine but since everything is flat, assembly seems to be more strightforward to me.

Good question, Robert, round stock would be great but I don't happen to have any 1018 round stock on hand so I used what I had in stock. I enjoy doing the occasional full tang knife but most of mine are hidden tang take downs.

What are the colored wheels that’s being used with the dremel tool?
@KyleRoyerKnives

Great question Shane The different colors represent different polishing grits. We use Rio Grande’s version of Cratex wheels Kyle

my question is- isn't peened full tang construction better and more simple to achieve? more secure and holding the thing together better. cuz this seems to me like a lot of work to make the thing actually worse- not so durable and just peening it once and for good..

I wonder this too, but katanas can be taken apart so there must be some positive about it. I think it would be so difficult to make a handle like this that could be disassembled, would take such precision fitting, maybe it is a test of how masterful the maker is? But I wonder if it could come unscrewed in battle with repeated blows?

Anything special about how the alignment pins within the handle are done?
@KyleRoyerKnives
@KyleRoyerKnives 5 лет назад
Sometime in the future we'll definitely cover more details on how I do internal line up pins. It's important to get the line up pin holes just the right size, you want the pins to fit snug but not too snug. I use 52100 hardened, 1/16th inch dowel pins, they are precision ground so I get the same results every time. Thanks for your question and watching.
