How to get Your Anniversary Clock Running Again

Now that I am retired, I just might show my life and some of the towns around me. My Brother and Dad, live on the same Dead End Road and yea, maybe we just might get into trouble a little, but have fun doing it. It is time to start smelling the Roses on the way instead of looking at them and passing them by.

Mike I plan on watching all of this video but it is late and I need to get some sleep. Wanted to say that I think it is great how you arent afraid to tackle these kind of clocks. As a lot of people dont. I also wanted to mention that in my videos I show you that I put all my clock parts in a plastic ice cream bucket that I have a lot of holes drilled in the bottom and on the sides. Then on the top lid I have a hole cut out just enough to all my hair dryer to fit into. Then I put the lid on after putting the parts in. Put my hair dryer in the hole. Turn the hair dryer on low and go do other things while it is drying the parts. You might want to give that a try. Good video so far. Also stay tune in the group page of mine because I am trying to set up our anniversary clock expert to do a live video chat so we can discuss these. There are a few folks that are buying them that need help. So I asked him to set up a live video chat through messenger. So stay tuned for that.

Great video Mike. I tagged you into a post on my group page. I remove the springs out of the barrel by hand. I do have one video where I am working on a 1959 clock. You might want to watch that video. You need to learn to do this. That way the spring gets cleaned up and you get all the cleaner out of them or they will become brittle and break on you.

The key wind clocks work well for around 20 years, then the lube around the spring gets thicker and slows the clock down to a stop. And the thin spring wire can not handle to much banging around. So if this clock isn't in the right place or moved a lot, then yes, they will break or stop working.

I have a version of this kind of clock that I bought for $2.99 and a dollar store like 20 years ago. What moves on it , is the little bird that’s underneath and it goes back-and-forth and it’s on like a little perch. It’s more like a twist… But I don’t know how to explain it. It doesn’t work anymore but I still keep it. I should probably try to figure out a way to fix it. But I absolutely love it it’s very romantic.

Beautiful clock. at 27:29 it's skipped forward about five minutes. This sometimes happens with these clocks. Maybe a little oil on the pallet teeth, or less… You can increase the resistance of the pallet by putting a tiny leafspring between the pallet and the top plate. Skipping forward might also be minimized by slightly lowering the Spring lever. It's a beautiful clock congratulations on the new dome. perfect

Hi Mike ....My clock hasn’t ran properly since my Mon bought it for me as a gift back in the 1980’s when we were stationed in Germany!! No matter what surface I place it on the pendulum refuses to stay turning....It will work for a few days then stop!! It is battery operated, not the wind-up type... after a few years I gave up, so it just sits pretty in my curio cabinet!!
@justmike57
@justmike57 4 года назад
Hey Lorraine 64. Most the time with these clocks, you have to level them so the bottom point of the pendulum sides are not touching anything. I have a few battery ones with the little wire that holds the pendulum up. You can not have any drag on that type of pendulum. I hope this helps you a bit Lorraine

@justmike57
@justmike57 Год назад
Too keep running, watch your timing of where it ticks. To keep the correct time, on top of the pendulum there is a dial that you turn, the + sign is for faster and the - sign is for slower. All clocks take some patience and if need be, walk away for 10 minutes and come back and get-er-done.

Thank you for the video Mike. I purchased this exact clock at a yard sale. I was thinking about selling it for parts but it almost seems doable to service it. I took the tarnish off the outside and love the clock. I'll let you know how it comes out. When you say flush the spring as much as you can..... Do you mean with cleaning fluid? Or water? Sorry it might be obvious but I didn't grasp your meaning. Matt
@justmike57
@justmike57 4 года назад
It's a bit hard to flush the spring, might be easier to use a syringe to push the cleaning fluid in, then let it soak. And the same with soapy water to wash out the cleaning fluid. then the hot, clean water. With the hole up, dry it with the hair dryer to heat it up good to help remove the water and of coarse, get some oil in it. Hope that helps S.M. Carless

Hello Mike! First I'd like to say that I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them. In this video, I assume you just ultrasound cleaned the mainspring inside the barrel. Afterwards, do you remove the mainspring and oil it or do you feel that this method is good enough? Thanks in Advance.
@justmike57

Yes, I did put the spring in the tank the way it was and was hoping for the best. I didn't have anything to take the spring out safely. After the movement cleaner, rinsed with hot water then soapy water, then hot water again. After drying the spring with the hair dryer, I put some clock oil in the hole. Still running well so far.

Hi Mike, Thanks for your video. I just finished my first tear down and overhaul of a Kundo clock, similar to yours. I relied heavily on your video but also consulted the Horolovar 400-day clock repair guide book. Your video was most helpful but a word of caution to anyone taking one of these Kundo's apart. You don't really talk about or show the very tiny spring that goes inside the small barrel located behind the clock face. The round barrel and pinion are the small parts you are holding in your hand at 16:30 of your video. This tiny spring will fall out during disassembly and it is very easy to not see it. You can lose it without even knowing it's there! Also, there is a small washer that keeps this tiny spring inside the small barrel after reassembly. During disassembly, it's easy to miss and lose the washer too! Although you don't mention this washer, at 16:49 of your video I can see it resting on the back side of the clock face you are holding in your hand. So, for anyone disassembling one of these Kundo's be extremely careful during disassembly that you see and carefully set aside this tiny spring and the washer. The clock won't work without them. They maintain the pressure on the clock hands after the clock is reassembled.
@justmike57
@justmike57 10 месяцев назад
Thank you for your response to the video. You are right about the small spring and washer and putting the clock back together I am surprised I didn't show them. Also this was my first one and since then, I have learned how to clean the barrel Main Spring. What I did here I would not recommend. The cleaner never gets washed out and the old oil and water I am sure doesn't look good inside. I did make a video on cleaning a barrel main spring after I learned just what they were all about. Again, thanks so much for your findings that I missed in the video and thanks as well for watching.
@SongBill40
@SongBill40 10 месяцев назад
@@justmike57 Mike, thanks for the update. I just found and watched your other (newer) video where you disassemble/clean/reassemble a 400-day main spring. Great job! I am not sure I'm ready to attempt that yet. My Kundo clock is running nicely now but it's only been one week since I put it back together. For the main spring, I soaked the housing in a clock cleaner solution for 24 hours, to include squirting a lot inside the hole. I then rinsed twice -- once with Dawn & hot water and once with super hot plain water. I drained as fully as possible from the hole and then blasted the main spring barrel and its hole with a hair dry for quite a few minutes. I looked for evidence of moisture but couldn't see any coming from the hole. After cool down, I used a clock oil pen to insert drops of oil into the hole, but not too much. Finally, after reassembling the clock, I completely wound and then completely released the mainspring three or four times. I was thinking (hoping?) this might help spread the drops of clock oil across the main spring. In any event, it will be interesting to see how long my clock runs without disassembling & cleaning the main spring in the manner you show in your other video. On the 400-day clock forum at NAWCC, some of the experts there strongly advise against attempting to disassemble/reassemble the main spring unless you have a (expensive!) spring winder. They explain how this is both for safety reasons and how the spring can rather easily get damaged or misshaped. Looks like you had none of those issues! Nice going. P.S. For anyone interested, I found Mike's other video at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qnFzS_Gb68Y.html

@justmike57
@justmike57 3 года назад
If you go to my playlist and look under cuckoo clock repair, you will see a video that shows the bottle of cleaner I use... and there are two kinds I have now. It is for cleaning clock works and you might find it on Ebay in smaller amounts. I use a normal clock oil but the Synthetic might be a better clock oil to use now. Either one is good.

Hey, Mike, I'm having a heck of a time getting a Kundo 400 hour clock going again. What is the ideal position for fork to sit along the verge pole? And what is the "rest" position for the fork? To the left, right, or center? Thanks!
@justmike57
@justmike57 2 года назад
I have found that moving the fork closer to the top and keeping it level will get your clock started and not zip by a double click or so and the pendulum will have better action.

I suppose it's a matter of taste but I prefer the plastic domes mainly because I can worry a lot less about breakage. Any difference in transparency is minor to non-existent. Scratches can be repaired with a plastic polish but I have not had a need to do that.
@justmike57
@justmike57 Год назад
I think you are right. It is a matter of taste and function. I prefer glass because it has the feel of quality and high end compared to plastic. Funny thing is, I have bought Anniversary clocks that were battery ran but had a glass cover for my key wind clocks that had the plastic cover on them. Of coarse the battery movements are so cheap, they can put the money into outside features. I have always said, it's your clock and you should be happy with it. Unless you are buying to resell, plastic works for you. You have a great one and thanks for stopping in Bill

@justmike57
@justmike57 2 года назад
I don't have a picture of your clock, but if it is just the wire that holds the pendulum up and keeps it turning around, that is simple enough to fix. The barrel that holds the spring should be cleaned and re-oiled as well. At least the shop should have given you an estimate and let you determine if the clock is worth the price to fix.
@mayorWest24
@mayorWest24 3 года назад
Hi Mike. You mentioned something about plastic domes vs glass domes. I just bought a quartz Kundo clock that was advertised as vintage, but it has a plastic dome instead of glass. Did Kundo ever make them with plastic domes or were the plastic domes made as an aftermarket replacement? I have three other Kundo dome clocks (one 400-day, three quartz) and they all have glass domes.
@justmike57
@justmike57 3 года назад
Back in the day, they also had plastic domes. I don't like them because they get scratched. So I hunt the Goodwill stores for the clocks with the glass domes and buy them cheap, even if they are quartz. Then I just trade them. A quartz clock is normally cheap, you can tell by the pendulum that goes around. Some quarts are very nice with nice pendulums that I wouldn't trade the domes. So for your answer to your question is Yes they made plastic domes for the older clocks.

I’m new here in trying to get my clock worked after I bought it at an estate sale years ago. Because of the shelter in place I have a lot of free time so I decided to give it a try to bring life back to the clock. I have been online searching advices until I found this one, absolutely the best. The instructions are so clear even a dummy like me would understand. However, I need a little extra helps: This is regarding the housing of the main spring. It was so tight, I won't be able to wind it counterclockwise except the key would snap back dangerously. So I assume the inside of the housing is all gummed up solid. Do I need to open the housing to clean it ? Or I could I drop the whole housing in some kind of solution to dissolve the craps? Please help and advise.
@justmike57
@justmike57 4 года назад
You are right. The clock works might be all gummed up, or the wratchen lever might be stuck or broke. I take it this is not a Cuckoo Clock. You can order online, the new clock oil and clock cleaner. But if you want to try cleaning it without the clock cleaner, you can use Dawn Dishwashing soap and hot water along with an old toothbrush. On a wind up clock, (Like an alarm clock) you have to be careful of the thin wire spring that ticks back and forth. very fragile. If you would like, I have an email address on my newer videos or here it is to let me know any other questions. justmike2575@gmail.com

To let the clock unwind, you have to turn it as if you are winding it. Then Raise the bar that holds it from unwinding and slowly unwind the clock, using the tool. If you are using the key, Sometimes it will get away from you and just want to eat your fingers and hand. I see this tool is around $30.00, but if you work on clocks a lot, it is well worth it to save your fingers. Thanks again for stopping in.

I have a very old German clock some dear friends gave my Mom years ago . It looks like it has hand painted flowers on the base and on the clock facing. It is very well made I want to tear it down completely and clean and lubercate it . The pendulum spring is busted that is the way we go it and there is no key. It would of been nice if you filmed putting it back together but I also understand if you are not sure how it goes back together and didn't want to film it .I saw all those gears you have and about shit a brick. thanks for doing this video . The first set of videos I have were for the ones that didn't want to take the movement apart. Most people are afraid to do so. My newest videos, I take them apart all the way. You must understand that you need to take many pictures of the movement and the gears so you can get it back together again. Then comes the harder part. Moving certain gears to get your clock back in time so the cuckoo will know when to stop and the gong and bellows know when to operate at the right time and right order.

He also told me that the book will have the length of support spring for the pendulum and what thickness he said you are better and cheaper to assemble your own support spring. The support spring came off the top and its is twisted very badly. I just need to find a unloader key now. I am really looking forward to tearing down and restoring it. The book I bought is The Horolovar 400 day clock repair guide its the eighth edition "78" I thought I was going to get a beginners book on tear down and cleaning 400s and how they work. I just opened it this after noon and started reading it and its for a Journey man clock maker not for a novus such as I. It goes right in to clock escapements and adjust them and then goes into questions and answers right after that. I got a freakin head ache trying to understand this shit. I called my guy to see if they have a beginners book on 400s and he told me you have the right book .The one thing I do like about it is it has most mounting plates for 400s for diagrams in the back of the book and it will tell you what plate you have and a out line for the suspension spring for the pendulum. I told Dale that this book is like giving him a book on how to repair a Mercruiser Alpha Gen 2 stern drives and not explaining how the drive works. I do Marine repair as you can tell Mike. I think if I tear this clock down and clean it and replace the suspension spring it will take off I dont think it ever been serviced. But the section in the book on setting the time for these 400s is very cloudy and nothing concrete . I have a lot to learn. As far as the main spring Mike I think it would be better to ultrasonic clean it then just take some 00 steel wool and get the old rust and crap off the spring instead of 40 and scotch brite. Thanks for trying to help me

Not sure if you had to change the Spring Wire. But if you did, there is a chance that the wire you have is the wrong wire. A too think of wire will make your clock run very fast and the book isn't always correct on some of the wires. When you turn the dial to slow the clock down, sometimes the balls on the lower pendulum need to be worked a little to make sure they moved in the direction they were asked to move.

@@wudao2001 Don't change the Spring if it's now broke. Also, don't wind the clock so tight you can't turn the key anymore because you will bind the spring up and the spring can't do it's job.
