Glue up boards flat the first time. Cranking down your clamps too tight could create more problems than expected. WOOD magazine's Kevin Boyle takes you through the steps needed to edge glue boards into nice, flat panels. That means less time finishing and less material wasted.
Does it look like you're missing some videos in your playlist? If you see a gray Private window, don't worry, you haven't missed a thing. In fact you should be excited because that tells you we have more videos to come in the weeks to follow. I could tell you the titles but that would ruin the surprise. Thanks for watching and enjoy - now go make something!

Excellent video and very well explained. I wonder why none of the woodworking channels EVER talk about wood glue. The channels all seem to universally avoid talking about, or showing what type of glue they are using, as if all wood glue is the same. From my own observations, the stage 3 waterproof glue, like Gorilla Glue Ultimate or Tite Bond 3, are TOTALLY DIFFERENT than the regular Tite Bond 1 wood glue being used in this video. The regular Tite Bond 1 is obviously just fine, but part of me feels like it's a waste to spend so much time and effort, with all the machining, and paying for such expensive wood, only to use a stage 1 standard wood glue? I guess it's not necessary to waste money on better glue, but I've found that the Tite Bond 3 and Gorilla Ultimate wood glue (basically the exact same thing) do not shrink as much, and the glue dries almost like an epoxy. Gorillia Glue Ultimate wood glue has intrinsic structural strength, even when filling a large gap. I think for some people it might be worth the added cost.

Thanks for tips. Do you ever clamp a caul on the top and/or bottom to insure there is no bowing? Maybe this is only necessary with thicker stock and larger glue ups?
@toddholmes1719
@toddholmes1719 5 лет назад
No need to alternate clamps top/bottom/top/bottom? I always worry about bowing of the clamp resulting in uneven pressure.

1) Good video 2) If you use a high quality rip blade in your table saw they will produce a glue line rip making the jointer redundant. Mine has been down for over a year, it is somewhere on the list to get repaired. 3) My clamps are old and black pipe so tape is not optional. Thank You

I've noticed that if I machine a glue up without a full day of drying I'll get uneven joint surfaces. Like gluing 3/4" x 1 1/2" solid maple to the edge of 3/4 maple plywood.

Great video, I noticed that you didn't mention to alternate end grain so no warping would occur?

If you sprinkle salt on the glue it won't slip as much or act as a "lubricant".

Thank you for posting this. I'm about to start wood working and this helps a lot. Can anyone recommend a good brand of clamps to do exactly what is being done in this video? Thanks!

I have a question, If you need panels that are not very wide say a panel 12" wide, Is it better to use narrow strips say 2" wide or use wider strips . Which is better to keep the panel from cupping or moving? Also I thought you also suppose to look at the end grain and alternate the curvature of the end grain as you laying out the boards?

Do you use 1/2” or 3/4” bar clamps

How much time do you have to get boards lined up? I find, living in Arizona (dry climate) I struggle to get 7 boards lined up, even lines and tightened on a cutting board before my titebond 3 starts to dry. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jim

@@Wood Thanks for the response. I did start gluing two or three pieces at a time but wondered if I was doing something wrong. This works and I thank you for confirming my process is the way to go. Takes a bit longer but IT WORKS Thanks, Jim

Do you use galvanized pipe for your bar clamps? Well, if I would have waited to watch the whole video, I wouldn’t have asked the question. Thanks for the info.

How do you fix a panel that has buckled? Specifically 2 boards

You could rip along the joint line, joint and plane the boards flat, then reglue them. They will be thinner...

Seems like you had some good info in that response. Too bad its one long run on sentence and annoying as fuck to read. I don't give a crap about perfect grammar or spelling or sentence structure. But dude, use some fucking punctuation and periods and people will read what you have to say

Hi Bobby, you are so right, and I fully apologize. I absolutely thought about it before I sent it and only did so because I thought it was funny. I was so hoping that I did not offend the person who wrote it, but obviously that is not the case. I often wonder why people bother sending mean comments, and I don’t want to be a part of the problem. Again, I am so sorry. It was uncalled for.

@W. Adams Thank You. I am new at woodworking and don't know much about different types of wood and I found the best place to learn is from experts like yourself and many others on RU-vid. So at times my questions may come across as stupid. Thank You
