How to Goat Down the RAVINE (The Long Dark)

People say the Ravine cannot be goated, because its full of death walls. If you try to go down there, you die. The game just kills you. In reality, though, there are hidden paths you can use to get down there without a rope, and this has been the case for some time. Here is one such route.

Disclaimer: You may have noticed I was warm in Ravine and then cold after coming from Bleak Inlet. This is just because I used a mod to make the world warm so there would be no breath animation, but this resets when you enter a region.

watching this makes me wish the devs would remove the invisible death planes, theres something special about exploring the map off-road like this and seeing things from perspectives you otherwise wouldnt without having to be paranoid about losing your entire run

Thanks Zak! If I might add, my route down is only really useful coming from the CH side of Ravine. If we're coming from the ML side, the route you've shown here is significantly shorter :)

I don't understand your comment. this is on the CH side. are there two different routes? it doesn't seem like there could be a better route down when your coming from the CH side, like this is as good as it gets

@@centraltexasbear9973 My point was that my route is worse(takes longer) if you're coming from ML. Not that mine is necessarily better coming from CH(although I think they're about equal.) You can always test it: Mine starts from the overhead log just past the trestle, as shown in the video that Zak linked.

Just dont forget.... if you didnt set up the rope, you're gonna have a hard time climbing back up. I know there's a way but most people arent going to make it the first time during a snow storm

This helped me with my Darkstalker run a few months back. Feel like I'm getting that name wrong. Granted, a member from the server linked me your video showing how that worked. I honestly doubt I would use it in a main run for the most part. Not sure yet.

Good stuff, Zak. This goat -- as well as the one up to Marsh Ridge in FM and going down from the BI radio hut -- really unlocked speedrunning the Darkwalker challenge for me. As for patching it out, if Hinterland hasn't addressed it by now, I'd lay money it's probably here to stay.

Never have done this goat (too scared), but you certainly have eased those fears with this video. Great video as always! Would mention that if you're just coming down here for a stim, make sure you deploy the rope first for the climb out. Otherwise I foresee some Bleak Inlet timbies in your near future.

Hola Zaknafein, te sigo desde España, gracias por todos los videos y tutoriales que haces, quisiera hacerte una pregunta, puede ser cierto que pescando peces de mar y no los de lagos o rio se optiene mas combustible para llenar los bidones , me gustaria que hicieras la prueva en un video, a mi me resulto mas facil llenar un bidon en Autovia Litoral que en Lago Misterioso, menos peces y menos tiempo. Ah but Zak many moons ago a player recorded going down to the real Ravine. Under the broken trestle of the rail bridge as you approach the CH transition. There is a fallen tree over the path and once upon a time you could get up there, cross the tree, and go down. The devs, in their wisdom, put up a Gandalf limb blocking 🚫 the way across the tree. So this player records this route. Starts a fire, pulls a BRAND (memory lane there) from the fire, throws it off the broken trestle bridge. Shows the route down to under that bridge. Picks up brand. Ends video. No exploration. To my knowledge it's the only recording ever of entering that particular Forbidden Zone.

I don't know exactly the spot you're talking about, but you can definitely explore the ravine past where the bridge goes over it. There is a way to goat up to the left. You can also do a large circuit around and get to the base of the trestle, among other places.

@ArchimedesLP It's been a while, but if memory is correct and nothing has changed: Leaving CH and cross broken trestle, then continuing on the path. You'll quickly come to a fallen tree overhead. Facing ML direction climb/goat the wall to the right, get up onto the fallen tree. But again that tree now has a branch sticking up barring the way. If it weren't there you could easily cross the tree and goat down to the base of the broken trestle bridge. I'm talking the broken trestle that scares new players the first few times but as veterans get bored/careless and walk off to a lethal plunge. I have never seen a video exploring down there anywhere, just the one I mentioned above.

@@JWilliamsLangley Yeah that is the route I've used. I also goated down to the base of the trestle but that was off camera(my video is the one Zak mentioned at the end.) You can still easily cross the tree. Interesting that this route was discovered all the way back when brands were a thing(long before I started playing.) I've never seen anyone else use this route before. I don't suppose you know how to find the old video?

@ArchimedesLP Ah I thought the limb addition was unpassable. As for the old video, I tried searching it's lost to the ether. Too much content for me to narrow the search. But you know the branch sticking up so the old video I'm referencing-they had an easier time...just cross the tree and goat down, no serious sprains. But yeah OLD video. Pre Alpha. I'm checking out your video now.

Well, gооd tо knоw оf cоurse, but I'll never try it оn оne оf my main runs) Wоrds "it's perfectly safe and nоt tо cоmplicated tо dо really" dоesn't sоunds cоnvincing when we're talking abоut deathwalls everywhere😅 Gооd оld rоpe has never let me down, and I'm sure it won't let me down in the future)
