Franny, thankyou very much for your helpful videos. I have really enjoyed this one a lot since I did the suspension greasing on my 1964 356 SC yesterday, without taking the wheels off, so I didn´t loose the king pins, but I will repeat the greasing operation exactly as you did in your video. Always learning with you. Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!

Great "how to" video, as I remember from my 356 days, there were little rubber covers we put on the grease fittings to keep dirt out between lube jobs.

Thanks Lars, It is interesting how Porsche and VW got very different results from similar tech. It actually makes going back and looking at VW very interesting.

Another beautiful video. I always use a “hand” operated grease gun (I don’t “pop” dust boot like that). And I put in enough grease to where I can see the old grease come out, then the new grease come out. I know it’s all clean grease inside then.

The Beetle / Käfer was designed by Ferdinand Porsche in the 1930s. Aside from the fact that Porsche also built tanks und tractors back in the day. VW and Porsche have always been interconnected and sort of part of each other, until VW officially bought Porsche in 2012.

Thanks Franny. These videos are so useful. Have you done one with sorting the wheel bearings and seals ? I think most owners who do their own work would love to get your take on that. Take care.

Another great video (as always). I'm going to use this red grease on another car that has 25+ grease fittings so I can tell when the old dark dark grease has been flushed out.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Most folks just thinking of topping off, but I look at it as more of an oil change. Or a brake flush... A different color is a great way to tell you have all the old stuff out. :)

I did my 61 356 yesterday and there were no grease zerks on the tie rod ends or steering. Also replaced the left rear axle seal. Used the torque dude from Zims. Made the axle nut torque a 1 man job as it multiples the torque x 9.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 3 года назад
Yeah, those things are great! I have used mine on the Beetle I had in and on the 356 to get the flywheel bolt off. I think mine is made for VW so I had to modify it a bit, but it also makes sure you get the proper torque when you put it back on.

Fanny you are correct but my question was concerning the lubrication of the front suspension of the 356 c vs the earlier 356's .

I know the 66 and earlier beetles share some parts with the 356. i wonder if those control arms were replacements or if Porsche just use those as per routine. At some point in the past I wanted 356 front brakes for my 65 beetle but the price was enough to scare me off.Talking to 356 owners many just do the disc conversion. However the cool factor of those enormous drums especially the finned ones on later 356s is hard to beat. There are threads on thesamba that list all the interchangeable parts for early bugs and 356s.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Boy, that is a long discussion ;) I do see the VW logo on some parts, but then there is the transmission... VW case filled with Porsche parts... It is a fun adventure to track down all the differences!

Just standard grease really. It can be helpful to use a different color so you can see it coming out the other side.

I noticed the top bolt on the king pin was turnig when you were tioghtening the nut. Do you not toque these to a specific number and hold the bolt while tightening the nut?

Thanks again for another great video! How long would you say the typical 14oz grease canister lasts? Trying to figure out how many I should order.
@HeidiandFranny

You bet! I think I ran through a little over half. I bought one extra, but didn't need it.

Ok, not knowing this suspension system design well I have a question. The link pin loosening and tightening (the in and out adjustment. Not the clamps) is that used as an alignment adjustment of sorts? I just don't understand the need for the in/out adjustment on them. I would think it would just be a taper fit like an tie rod. I really enjoy jobs like these on classic cars. I'm not fond of the new non lubricated suspension components In most cars.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Hi Tim, it would affect the alignment, but that isn't the alignment adjustment. There are several shims in there that set the proper geometry. The link pin adjustment is to compensate for wear and to allow proper lubrication. It is really old skool and requires a bit of maintenance, but the design philosophy was different back then. The wanted you to work on your car. There weren't any Porsche dealerships back then... All the servicing and sales were handled through VW dealerships. I think I tend to buy cars based on philosophy more than anything else... Isn't that weird?
@Thrakall
@Thrakall 6 лет назад
Good to know. I'm with you, I love the vehicles with expectiations from the owner to perform regular service. I guess thats why I love old military vehicles. You really have to keep up with them. Yeah makes sense that they would go through VW dealerships. Since there is a sharing of parts. I mean they are all Dr. Porsche's cars really.

Great job! Which type of cleaner did you use prior to lubing?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Thanks! I used a bunch of Super Green cut 50:50. It does a pretty good job actually. To finish off I used standard Brake Clean. The thing about the Brake Clean is that I have to then open the doors and turn off all the heaters because that stuff is pretty flammable.

can you let me know the brand and type of the grease? Thx
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
I think that was "MasterPro" heavy duty grease. One tip might be to use a different color (like Valvoline) each time so you can see when you have pushed the old stuff through. F

Are all the 356's the same? I have a C Car. any differences?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 5 лет назад
Hi Bill, Oh my gosh... Many differences! The 356 was an experimental car for Porsche in that they were constantly improving - Gumund-356-356A T1-356A T2-356B T5-356B T6 to finally the 356C. Many visual differences. The early cars are more curvacious in the front, the up to the T6 cars the front bonnet is curved instead of straight, the engines and transmissions changed several times... There are so many changes inside and out that, if you really study them, you can peg a car to a specific year or half year! A book I like is: "Buying, driving and Enjoying the 356" by James Schrager. A little dated as far as pricing, but a good reference as to the differences. F

You are right. Sorry about that I just updated the description. Thanks!
@Eriberto66

Absolutely wrong procedure! If you slacken the link pin grease does not build pressure and does not enter in the kingpin gallery, leaving kingpin bushing ungreased. The correct way is the opposite! Before greasing pack more the linkpin and grease until old grease (if there!)exits from King pin bushing. In your video this does not appear. If you performed already this wrong procedure 2 or 3 times I think your king pin bushing are already worn, time to rebuild. Sorry for this.
