Ugh I'm not going to waste too much time explaining why trancing is a terrible thing to do to your rabbit, but it is formally known as tonic immobility which is a state of paralysis utilized by prey animals to feign death. It shouldn't take a neuroscientist to figure out why this isn't healthy. It raises the heart rate, presses internal organs onto the spinal cord, and is a vulnerable position for your rabbit to be in. If you own a rabbit, you need to be responsible and understand that your rabbit is not a toy for you to position as you please. There are plenty of other ways to groom your bun. I simply distract mine with food in his play pen and groom him while he's eating, bunny butt and thumpers included.

@waterbottlecompany
@waterbottlecompany 4 года назад
Nina Dawson firstly, you should bond with your bunny. You calling it ‘a little bitch’ makes it seem as if you don’t like or even hate your rabbit. You should start with petting your bunny to ‘trick’ it into thinking that when you are just petting your bun, not brushing it. In general you should be more understanding towards your bunny because they are prey animals and are easily scared.

That "trance" position is a survival instinct the rabbit use when trapped by a foe. By fully relaxing the body the rabbit can trick the foe to believe that the rabbit is dead, and then release it's grip. When released, the body goes into fleeing mode (raised heart and breathing rate, stress). Therefore, you should avoid putting your rabbit on the back too often.

For those who have lived with rabbits, most will tell you they are afraid to post any exception about their individual rabbit on RU-vid because somewhere out there, there will be someone who knows more than they do, despite the individual rabbit's circumstance.

Rabbits should not EVER be placed on their backs, and tranced. Do your research first!!! It puts them in a tonic state that can potentially kill them from a heart attack. This video shows great grooming techniques, but trancing should be avoided at all costs. An educated rabbit owner would not do this or cause anymore stress then necessary to their pet.
@LoriWolfcat
@LoriWolfcat 10 лет назад
Correction! MOST rabbits don't like it and it's stressful for them. Just like MOST rabbits hate to be picked up. But there are some rabbits who love to be picked up just like there's SOME rabbits who like lying on their backs. MOST rabbits HATE baths, while others love baths. You can't just say "rabbits" or "All rabbits hate this," or "Rabbits love this!" because you would look like a fool. Not EVERYONE loves, or hates EVERYTHING, so keep that in mind next time.

@Feed_the_Kitty_a_Hotdog 10 лет назад
Lori Wolfcat You must be a rabbit breeder. I own 5 rescued house rabbits (dumps from breeders because they didn't meet show standards) and foster rabbits for the local humane society. None of the rabbits I have ever encountered had a need to be given a bath too,flipped onto its back and tranced for nail trims, scent gland cleaning or brushing them out. A butt bath should only be given if the rabbit can't clean itself. My rabbits are all healthy and litter trained, HATE being picked up but loved to be pet. I see no need to cause undue stress to my pets because of ignorant suggestions. Do what you want with your own rabbits.

In this situation, no. No rabbit like this. People do think so because they look relaxed, but as I say in my comment they are paralysed and unable to move. This is science, not meanings. Look it up. If you lay your rabbit on the back regularly for cuddles and such, stop it. Rabbits generally do not like to be picked up either because of their natural instincts. It's okay to lay a rabbit on its back for when you have to cut their nails, but not for cuddles. They do not like it!

Yeah it does, because it's in a trance. Some animals (fairly rare) can be put in a physical trance by altering the posture of the animal in a certain way (usually upside down). Bunnies love it because it calms them down and the absolute worst thing for any rodent, is stress. Sharks are the most impressive animals that can be put in a total body trance-state. Just google "shark trance upside down". It really genuinely is mind blowing to watch (and do!). Plus it doesn't harm the animal.

She's doing right; supporting the bunny in this position is very important. The reason it's not good to force a rabbit in this position and give them time to trust is that; Rabbits have very weak stomach muscles. When they are placed on their back, their stomach changes position much like ours and puts significant pressure on their little heart thus reducing their heart's efficiency to pump. Their brain receives less oxygen and they slip into a trance. They are not really sleeping, rather in borderline shock. It is safe and relaxing for them provided they know you are there and they trust you. You need to reinforce this trust by providing constant support. It may take some time, but let them develop that trust at their rate. It's very important to support them when in this prone position, so that when they wake up, they do not snap their spine and/or receive back damage from panicking. Mature rabbits will learn this position to be very relaxing after someone helping them with it. But young will not and are very fragile. Wild rabbits develop the use of this skill not for relaxing as they rarely can, but to hide from their predators. They use it to "Play Dead." Most if not all predators will not eat an already dead animal.

@AyNeKy Hi AyNeKy, you can clean her paws by takin a cloth soaked in clean water & gently wiping her paws & feet (she may not like it thou cos these areas r rather sensitive). What u can do to prevent her paws & feet frm gettin dirty again is to ensure that her litter box is kept clean & dry at all times (change her litter regularly i.e. once every 3-4 days). The thing with rabbits is, as long as we keep their living areas clean, they'll do the necessary grooming to keep themselves clean. =)

WOW, I'm impressed with that relaxed trance, but I agree with the other posters-I could NEVER get Tyler into a relaxed position like that. I cannot even get him on his back, he kicks and freaks out. In fact, in order for me to trim his claws, I have to swaddle him in a towel, making sure his eyes are covered, snuggle him like a baby, and gently pull each paw out, slowly, one at a time, in order to clip them all, and it's still hard to do it even with all that.

@TeenyTeh
@TeenyTeh 13 лет назад
@1MikalaB Hi 1MikalaB, you're right that this trance position is the rabbit is "playing dead". Rabbits do this when they get caught by a predator so that the predator, thinking the rabbit is dead, will loosen it's grip on it - it's then that the rabbit can try to escape. Trancing is NOT recommended to be done everyday (as say a bonding experience), but might be necessary to clean/ groom your rabbit or perform health checks on it if it doesn't stay still in other positions.
@hanema27
@hanema27 8 лет назад
OMG why do you put a rabbit on its back? You should know, as a groomer, that he's going into a tonic immobility state and cannot move because he's like hypnotized but still feels and hears everything but not be able to move. Pet stores sell dry shampoos for chinchillas, hamsters and rabbits. Get that instead of bathing him. If fleas are a problem, there are some cat flea repellants that work (I can't remember which ones at the moment). Bathing rabbits, or even getting their undercoat drenched in water, causes their body temperature to drop and can easily develop hypothermia.

@stefanitusim5791
@stefanitusim5791 7 лет назад
Poor those rabbits and bunnies from people like her. They don't know how to care for bunny well. At first, you don't put bunny on its back, because as people mention here in comments, it can kill them, second, you don't need to clean a bunny really, because they are enough capable of cleaning themselves, except when they have a bunny partner by their side and they groom each other however they like. Since they get scared easily and then they just stand there like a rock and playing dead, or they run as fast as they can, they should be left alone, not to pick them up, not to clean them with water or brushes, because they don't need it, they can care for themselves alone, but you can give them food and pet them just like bunnies will do the same to each other. My bunny is healthy, well, happy, jumping around, I didn't even took him to the vet, there's no need for it, because even he doesn't need one but prefer to live a calm, normal and happy life and I try to make him to feel like he's home. The more you take bunny to the vet and use products on him or her, the more sick they will be and unhappy, just like people, that go often to doctors for any type of accident, sometimes is good, but sometimes is too much. Nature is here for us and provide us enough resources to survive, just we should know how to use it well. Bunnies accommodated to natural life in the forest, they are wild animals and they get sick less there than in houses where some of them are limited in what they can do but in a forest they are free, even if there's predators, it's their normal life and they even see us as predators if we don't care for them well. Never try to pick up a bunny if he or she doesn't want, it shows how unhappy they will be, just you don't see it. Never use water on them to clean, don't lay them on their back if they don't want, and clean them from their back.. They can do it all alone.

@germagic2 Hi germagic2, if your rabbit is kept indoors, it should not have fleas. But if it is kept outdoors (which it shouldn't in the first place as rabbits should be kept indoors) or is brought out in the open, it could have caught fleas from there. Do bring your rabbit to the vet for further examination. The vet will probably apply some medication on the back of your rabbit's neck and give you some to apply periodically to get rid of the fleas. Good luck!

Admittedly, this is sometimes induced by vets in extreme circumstances, but it shouldn't be done lightly, or without a damn good reason. Rabbits are prey animals, and the state that is induced when they are tranced is a form of fear induced defense mechanism. They may look completely relaxed, because they are literally playing dead. The fact that this state is fear induced should worry you since indeed it's not unheard of for rabbits to die from shock and fear, including induced trancing.

i've always found warm water is best. shampoo never seemed to help as much as a simple butt soak. another option is use corn starch (from the kitchen). cover the area with corn starch, rub it in and all the crap can just be combed out.

When he comes out of his cage, simply just pet him. then put your hand over his eyes gently but dont force him to keep his head down. if he tries to back away just place your other hand behind him. then take your hand thats covering his eyes and remove it. then take your arm and wrap it around him covering his eyes then just scoop him up hope this helped

@1MikalaB Hi 1MikalaB, as mentioned, it's not recommended to be done everyday (or for long periods at a time), but when you need your rabbit still and not struggling (for when you need to groom them, apply medication etc), it is a solution. If of course, you can keep your rabbit from wriggling around/ moving around in other ways (on all 4s), by all means. Just sharing my experience as tracing works for Sugar (who's really finicky). =)

buy wire protectors and cover any wire the rabbit might be able to reach, buy a magic comb (way better than a brush), only feed the rabbit timothy hay. Use kibble as treats, 1/4 cup per day per 5lbs of rabbit (they are fortified - so they are like vitamins, but are also meant to fatten rabbits up for slaughter, thus are not to be used as a full meal). Use hard wood pellets for bedding. If the rabbit stops eating for 8 + hrs, bring it to a vet as it can go into GI stasis, which is serious.

haha that u gotta massage the neck and below the ears... Anyway just a tip on my rabbits and dogs...If their ears stink, or their skin get rashes and those irritations...I have a $1 solution. 1. Get an aloe vera... you can buy aloe vera leaves at NTUC. 2. Juice it up, including the green portion. 3. Apply to affected areas. I personally use aloe vera on myself if I get rashes. And also for my hair. Aloe vera promotes hair growth and helps to fight dandruff.

@lolgogo9 Hi lolgogo9, a rabbit not eating is a clear sign that it is not well - it could have GastroIntestinal Stasis, which means that the intestines become static. This can be due to a lot of factors like stress, dehydration, pain from another underlying disorder or illness, an intestinal blockage or, insufficient dietary crude fiber. Left untreated, the rabbit could die a painful death. Do send it to the vet as soon as possible. Rabbits which do not eat for even a day can die. Good luck!

@tazio998 Hi tazio998, the trance is indeed not a rabbit's natural position & it is not at its most comfortable. We shld not hold them in this position for too long - just long enough 4 us to do e necessary nail clipping or grooming. The reason why rabbits go into this type of trance, is cos when they are picked up by us & held upside down like this, they think they are being caught by a predator and pretend to play dead - when they find a suitable opportunity, they will struggle to get free.

@MANIACMONKEYSKB Hi MANIACMONKEYSKB, it's best not to overhandle your rabbit when she's pregnant - for fear of injuring mother & babies. FYI, rabbits are also a little more aggressive when they are pregnant. As the gestation period is only 1 month, you can hold off the grooming till she has delivered. Simple grooming (when she's on all fours) like brushing her fur could still be done while she's pregnant. Do sterilize your rabbit after delivery to prevent future unwanted litters.

I'm sorry this is not true. I have two bunnies, one is quite short tempered, the other one is shy and very fearful. Neither of them like to stay on their back because that is a very stressfull position and makes them feel harmless. I had to turn them upside down few times for various serious issues [stitches after an operation] and i know that they tend to react very differently when i flip them over but they both relax at one point and go to a trance like state - which is not natural or positive for them. That just means: no bun likes to be put in that position. It's stressfull and should be avoided. Do that only if you have no choice and you have to check something important. Other than that please avoid it.

@rynclint26 Hi rynclint26, scratchy, flaky skin (with bald patches) is usually a symptom of mites, but to be sure, you should bring your bunny to a rabbit-savy vet. And yes, if it's a case of mites, your 3 month old bunny can spread it to the other 2.
@PersilBunnies

@epicdoctorwho Because she has tranced him/her. THIS SHOULD NEVER BE DONE UNLESS ITS TO ADMINISTER IMPORTANT MEDICAL TREATMENT. It doesnt mean that the rabbit is sleeping/relaxed. It is an extreme fear response, the rabbit is terrified, not relaxed. If a rabbit in the wild cant escape, hide or run away. What do they do? FREEZE
@TeenyTeh
@TeenyTeh 13 лет назад
@stephylove10 Hi stephylove, it is unlikely that there will be big bald spots during a shed. Also, when your rabbit is shedding fur from all areas of its body, it's most likely experiencing a shed. A bald spot at a specific area (of a few specific areas) is probably due to mites and you should bring your rabbit to a vet asap. Good luck!

@sektion1 Hi, it's normal 4 rabbits 2 b easily scared as they r e prey animal. & to feel uncomfortable when picked up (as they r ground loving). To minimize their stress, pick em up only when necessary - when u need 2 groom em, bring em to e vet etc. To calm ur rabbit down when u have 2 pick him up, immediately bring him to ur chest firmly (but gently) & stroke his head n reassure him. When he's not struggling, flip him over quickly (wif confidence - as animals can sense it if u r not). Gd luck!

@stephylove10 Hi, yes rabbits in a trance r not relaxed. That's why u shld only trance ur rabbit when u need 2 groom her/ clip her nails etc - not on a daily basis. When rabbit is out of her cage & she stays outside, it cld be tt she doesn't want 2 go back in cos she's not done playing/ exercising? Also, is cage large enuf 4 her 2 prance ard? Rabbits do not want 2 go back 2 small spaces as it's uncomfortable. She may turn away frm food if she's not hungry or if she's not feeling well.

Rabbits trance when they are in a high amount of stress- it raises their heart rate and can lead to death. A lot of this ladies advice is good, so I can't believe she would do something that vets all say is incredibly dangerous. There is a big difference between having a rabbit that trusts you let you hold it in a 'baby' position and deliberately trancing a rabbit. Trust leads to a calmer but responsive rabbit, trancing is 'playing dead' and is a result of extreme stress.
@TeenyTeh
@TeenyTeh 13 лет назад
@zellzhou88 Hi zellzhou88, it's normal 4 Fluffy 2 pick out alfafa hay -it's sweeter than timothy hay. Fluffy (at 2 mths) is still a baby & shld be eating alfafa hay instead of timothy hay. When Fluffy becomes a "teenager" & goes into adulthood (at 4-6mths), do start switching her 2 timothy hay, orchard grass & oat hay as they r higher in fibre. Older rabbits need 2 consume more fibre than baby rabbits to keep em healthy. For hay they dun eat, use it to line e litter box (on top of e litter).

I have had pet rabbits for over 10 years. Rabbits are not predatory animals as you stated, they are Prey animals; they are easily triggered into flight mode. The rabbit in this video is (obviously) not highly stressed, it is completely relaxed. I'm not really sure you know what your talking about.

@stephylove10 Hi stephylove10, trancing your rabbit takes practice and patience. Is your rabbit sterilized/ neutered? If so, that will greatly help as it will make him less aggressive and more calm. If you like, I can hop over to your place to teach you how to trance him. And as I have been getting numerous requests on a video specifically on how to trance a rabbit, we can make a video and you can teach other beginner rabbit owners how to trance your own rabbit. Let me know! =)

@dcanrius Hi dcanrius, I personally have not heard of that remedy or tried that myself. I would still suggest though, if your rabbit has ear mites or any other problems, to bring him to a rabbit-savy vet. The last thing we want is to try to diagnose the problem ourselves (espeically when we are not professionals in this field) and self-medicate. The problem might be due to something else - which we cannot see with the naked eye or a result of something more serious.

@sophia9876543210 Hi, ur rabbit shld keep herself clean (as they r fastidious groomers) as long as u keep their living area clean i.e. clean litterbox regularly, wipe living area daily etc. If rabbit's feet r dirty, put ur rabbit on her back (like e vid), use a tissue (wet it with water) & gently wipe to get out e stains. U might have to trim her stained fur to remove stubborn stains + poo tt has stuck to her fur. Careful not to snip too much off as she needs the fur for padding.
