A lot of men want to know how to grow an epic mustache. I don't blame them as it's a great feature that you can have on your face. The difference between an epic mustache and a handlebar mustache is the fact that the epic has a beard while the handlebar doesn't.
The best way to grow an epic mustache is to set a goal and stick to it. In my other how to grow a beard video I stressed the point of making a goal that was based on months of growth. With the moustache the trick is to make a goal based on length.
A mustache grows at various rates depending on who is growing it and it can even grow at a different rate than your beard. This is why it's important to set a goal of length. The ideal length is for the mustache hairs to grow down past your lips. The key to doing this is not trimming the mustache at all if you want to grow it fast. You can trim it along the way but realize you will be slowing down your progress.
Along the way using mustache wax and a comb really helps keep the wildness at bay. Keep in mind that there will be some awkwardness, irritation, and frustration as your mustache will be touching your lips and getting into your mouth. This is normal and to be expected. You will get used to it over time but the first time around it will be very strange, resist the urge to trim it during this phase.
Be aware that you will potentially receive a lot of comments on your epic mustache, both positive and negative. An epic or handlebar mustache isn't a common thing seen in public and people will react to it.

You're expecting too much, too soon. I found that I really turned a corner at the 7 minute mark. I suggest you start again and exercise a bit more patience.

You'll need a toothpick and a small piece of tape for your mustache. You'll should also try to get one of those old style pocket watches on a chain, since those look great with your future mustache. Just open up your watch glass, wedge the toothpick just under the minute hand, and tape it down for about 5 months and 2 days. Try not to forget or you'll have mustache all over the place.

I've been trimming my moustache every few weeks and not sure if I could really pull off an epic moustache, but after checking out your videos it gave me a boost of confidence to try! WolverinesNation92 I'm the opposite, full thick stash/go-t, but my beard is well, think as hell on the sides. mind you tho, I'm 39 and only growing it for 2 months so far. It's the first time ever trying to grow a beard.

bryan smith sides took me 4 months to start looking ok the first time. 6 months to fill in and my beard looked really good. My best tip is don't trim, especially the top hair on your lower cheeks. I used to have stubble, so I was used to shaving them. But with a full beard it looks way better with a "natural" line. Those bumps under the cheeks grow really slow, and don't view them as stray hairs! Yeah the chin didn't really fill in until 8 months... How did it go by the way?

I have an epic moustache and I think that you never get 100% used to the hairs around and in your mouth. But it does get better. Only last night when I was flossing, one hair got tangled with the dental floss and ended up getting stuck between my teeth. I got it out unharmed, but that was a first! If you want something like this, you can say goodbye to drinking from a glass or a cup, stock up on straws! I actually carry one around with me just in case. And eating some foods like ice cream, chips and dip, or any other messy foods is definitely a challenge. So stock up on napkins too! As soon as I'm done eating, whether at home or a restaurant, it's off to the rest room to wash up and dry.

i've never had any comments on my moustache nor have i had any negative comments on my facial hair. I think part of that may be the fact i'm 6'4" and 240lbs. I think one of the important things about having a large beard/moustache is wearing it proudly no matter the length/style.

Great advice again,thanks beard baron. One month in to growing my 'tache and you're right...I am already getting loads of comments,mainly positive,a few negative...a few just plain odd. My wife is coming round to the idea I think and as I said to her, "judge it when it is finished....I don't judge your hair cuts/dying/styling half way through....I comment when it's finished...so please do me the same courtesy!! Best Beard/Moustache advice ever. The first time I grew out an epic (8month) moustache, I got a lot of negative comment and a lot of positive comments. The positives were very encouraging, "NICE BEARD!" etc, and the negatives weren't all that original and ranged from "you auditioning for Duck Dynasty?" to my sister laughing out loud while we were having a semi-serious conversation, "I CANT EVEN WATCH YOU WHEN YOU TALK!!!" Presently, the job I have requires that my moustache not be "epic" and so I trim it to slightly less than epic status. First time I grew one out it drove me crazy... Next time I grew it out I barely noticed. Gonna need to see a video on "How To Make-Out Whilst Having An Epic Mustache". :)

Great video. To me, a beard is nothing without an epic moustache. I mean, I don't really judge a guy that grows an epic beard and keeps the moustache completely trimmed, but it just doesn't look good in my opinion. I'm on my 5th month and yeah, I'm getting there and was wondering if my moustache would grow or not since my beard is very long compared to the moustache and, while I do remember trimming the moustache a bit around the end of the first month, I don't recall doing it again ever since.

This was super helpful thanks for making this! Right now I'm working on growing out my beard and mustache. Just gatta wait for the beard hairs on the front of my chin to get a little thicker and darker. But one thing I'm concerned about is eating Chinese food. Like specifically noodles with sauce on them. I'm worried it would get all up in my beard and stuff. Anyone here have any experience with that?

You're right about it driving you nuts until it's tamed and under control. I've had mine for about 6 months now and will never go back to short. Love the look, feel, challenge, all of it. Cleared both lips and couldn't take it any more. I could not tame the middle portion of my mustache. Trimmed just enough off the middle "toothbrush" region, and it is infinitely more manageable. This took some courage because I thought I might ruin my mustache completely, but it looks good. I'm still getting a nice handlebar effect by letting the rest continue to grow. Haven't quite tamed the epic moustache, but it's just another chapter in my epic beard odyssey.
@thebeardbaron

Bobby Uttcrumbs It's definitely a good move to trim that if it starts driving you nuts as it can be very difficult to get those hairs to obey.

If I have some hair in my lips, kind of like a mustache, but not yet a full mustache what should I do ? Shave it or let it grow ? I'm 21 and my beard always grows faster than my mustache... I also have the patchy style of beard but anyway, I just want my mustache to grow a little more so it can match the darkness of my beard.

I'm working on growing my beard right now. first time ever in my 37yrs on this planet. its been about 2 months and so far so good on my cheeks and chin but boy you aren't kidding about the mustache growing at much different rate, mine is super slow. I also have two slight bald spots on each sides of my lips so I have to wait for my mustache to get longer to actually connect to the rest of the beard... the other thing is my hair is a light color so from a distance my mustache looks very thin but up close you can see a lot of hair, I'm just now getting to the point that the hair is breaking over the top part of my lip. maybe one day I'll have a nice beard like yours! thanks for all the tips. I sent you a photo of what I'm working with by the way

I'm 22 so my beard hasn't filled in completely yet (especially between my lips and my chin, and I have no connectors whatsoever) but my mustache is fierce. It's practically begging to grow out into an "epic stache." Would it be unwise to stop trimming it since my beard isn't full yet? I fear that it might look kind of awkward.
@syaoranoji
@syaoranoji 10 лет назад
I also started to grow my stache later on after growing the rest of the beard. I have the long sides, but the area above my lips I ended up breaking down and trimming it a month ago. I'm giving it another go, this time with some of your wax. I can't wait for your video on eating with that epic stache. I'm in def need of tips for that. The current girl that I'm into LOVES my beard... (+100 pts right there), but I'm not sure her reaction when I grow that epic stache haha. Wish me luck.

So I've recently stumbled upon your channel here. Really enjoying the content and I just want to ask you a question about the curling of a mustache. When is the best time to start adding in the curl? would it be once you start applying mustache wax to manage and train the epic mustache or would it be later after the mustache has started to fill in properly? I noticed you've said your mustache isn't grown to have a curl and I'm just curious what the difference is in growing an epic mustache like yours and one that curls. If I missed this in one of your other videos I'm sorry for asking an already explained answer.

My problem lies in the fact that I have very thin growth in the gap below my nose, and the whiskers are more blonde which makes them less apparent. The hairs towards the edge of my lip I have grown over 2 inches before and I can curl them out to the side nicely, but I still want the full lip coverage without a distinct gap in the middle; its like my mustache wants to be epic everywhere but the middle :P ... it really bugs me, I want to look in the mirror and see nothing but epicness from the nose down but nope just don't have the coverage in the middle of the stache

It's starting to do it's thing, so off we go. I'm about at my 4 month mark and loving it! I love that it's starting to get peoples attention. Thanks again John!

Hey Pinetop, it's a common thing to call it a handlebar but it's really only a technicality that you'd run into in the competition circuit. It's great though as you're realizing the bigger it gets the better!

I understand that growing beards and facial hair is in genetics, but my father can grow a beard and I can't. I'm 21 and I've only been growing my sideburns into my "beard" for about 2 or 3 months but my brother, 19, has been growing for over a year and has just a whole lot of wispy hairs. Is it possible that my wisps will turn into a beard? But I have been growing a cool little mustache for a few months, but my question is, IF I CAN'T GROW A BEARD, IS IT POSSIBLE TO GROW AN EPIC MUSTACHE? Thanks for any advice!

Super helpful vid. How long would it generally take to pass the bottom lip? Been growing mine for 5 months but still not there yet.

Hair generally grows about 1/4 inch a month. Mine grows a little faster than that. But some grow a little slower. So depends on the person.

Beard Baron I love your vids man, im 19 so my beard is not strong and complete, but I love growing it. I know that shaving it with a razor or whatever does not make it stronger and fuller, but I see tiny blonde hairs on my beard and I was wondering if shaving those would make them eventually black and strong, would love to get a reply.. Thanks
@thebeardbaron
@thebeardbaron 10 лет назад
khaled kh There's a good chance that those blonde hairs are new and will develop over time into darker thicker hairs. Shaving won't help those develop but time will.

I started mine ('stache only) Dec 1 2014, but it's been trimed a few times by a barber for shaping and evening. Yes, eating certain things, like tacos, pizza, or anything that is normally messy, is even worse. Definitely have to drink with a straw, there's no other way. Epic mustache, I like that description! At one time they were cosidered a normal fashion item, but rare today. I do get comments on it, good and bad. Unfortunately mine is grey now : ( but I can't do amything about that. I guess we're lucky enough to be able to even grow an "Epic" mustache, not every man can. I love looking at pictures from the 19th, early 20th centuries when they were common. Some really great moustaches back then! Oh yeah, the derby looks great on you. Right out of the 19th century! I read a newspaper article about Wyatt Earp from the late 1880s in Colorado where the female reporter talks about his tall, athletic physique and "great droopy moustache." Now THAT is Epic! My wife doesn't understand. I don't have a bowler, but I do wear a cowboy hat (replica of Sam Elliott's in Conagher). And living in nyc I do get some looks, but a lot of compliments too.

How soon will the mustache trimming video be posted? I've been growing my handlebar for about a year and eight months and the mustache is acting up more than ever. I try to reason with him, but he's very stubborn and generally does whatever he wants. I remember my mustache and I got into a disagreement recently and he pulled a knife on me. Most videos or advice I've read suggests not trimming at all and I'm curious as to your recommendations on trimming an epic stache. I've got plenty of length to work with even after having it trimmed by a barber a few times, but it doesn't seem to tame the beast. I've learned to deal with the hassle of eating, but this is more about achieving a cleaner, less disheveled look. I'm getting nervous now as he watches me type this, so please, help! By the time the video gets posted, it could be too late!

I grow a pretty good beard, but my mustache is narrow. Kind of like Willie Robertson of duck Dynasty. SO ANNOYING! It's odd because my dad has a wide stache and I don't. It grows well over my lip but it's narrow, ugh.

Growing a beard for many years and reached a very decent full beard level that reaches the sternum. It wasn't easy. There are stages to it where it looks weird and just doesn't want to comply. But it is so worth powering through. Something I only recently added, is to stop trimming the mustache. And damn is that hard. Chin and burns(?), no problem, but the mustache is not only in your way all the time, it also is the one bit that can generate some funny looks while it is growing to length. My personal goal is to be able to comb all the hair to each side. After about a year, still far from it. Anyway, just wanted to say: The mustache piece in growing a beard is the hardest bit. Stay focused. And if you are, I am sharing your pain.

John is not kidding about the mustache wax and how it works to manage a larger mustache. I am not at the point of the epic stache yet (6 months of growth or so, but I trimmed a couple of times before I decided to go big). I just recently purchased the wildwood wax from the Beard Baron and its making things much more tolerable for me. One of my favorite responses to a gentleman being questioned condescendingly about why he is growing a large beard was simply "Beard equals man." I think about that comment often when looking for the strength to push forward.

I just subscribed to you. And geez I was trimming the hell out of mine. I guess I wont be doing that anymore! Im not really going for a handle bar, and frankly I don't know what the particular style is called. Just look up General Robert E Rodes. I want a stache just like his.

The best part about my beard and mustache is, it makes you think about eating the proper type of food. I noticed the more man made the food is, the more it gets in the mustache. It's almost like a learning tool for your brain to detect what food is healthy. I eat mostly a carnivore diet and I reolize that animal fats dont make my face itch, but plant oils make my face itch. I can eat a steak and have fat all over my hands after rinsing my plate, and I actually use that oil to spread into my beard 😅. I know the people in older times use to make lye soap which had animal fats in it.

Hello Mr. Beard Baron, I am growing an epic mustache. One complaint I have is I tend to sweat quite a bit on my upper lip and find myself constantly wiping my stache to keep it dry. This really only happens when I'm getting a little warm. Any suggestions on how to stop this or get through this? Thanks!

If I ever trim my mustache after its down past the top lip the girlfriend always finds it off putting and thinks I have very large lips, because she's not used to seeing them - they get used to it and then when it's gone they think you look weird... that's if they are there through the growing process.

How do you deal with eating the sides of the mustache? My middle seems to have stopped about 1/2 way down my upper lip, even thought I don't really bite that part. The ends of the sides are about 3/4 inch into the beard but when I eat they always find their way into my mouth and frequently get pulled out as a result of being bit. And while burgers are the primary offender of foods that make me eat my mustache I doubt I'll stop eating burgers anytime soon.

Hi, great video! I am 21 years old and have light brown full beard with a bit of blonde, especially on the mustache. My mustache covers my upper lip, except the damned middle part of the upper lip that grows short. Some people say that massaging helps, and some say that shaving it helps, some people say to sit and wait for it. My father have the full mustache, but I don't have it yet. Shit, the winter is coming and I need hair there. I guess I should sit and wait, if there's no other way.

Unfortunately, due to my occupation and the need to wear a full face respirator, I cannot grow a full beard. I'm getting away with a decently grown out goatee. The problem I'm having is that my wife is annoyed with the length of the mustache. She likes the look but can't stand it going over my lip (let alone both). Is there a way to manage the mustache that makes us both happy? A boss 'stache that isn't stabbing her in the face every time I kiss her?
@KalvinistKyle

Question regarding getting past both lips. I have had a mustache for months...probably a year. Granted, mistakenly i trim it because i comb it constantly and pick at it, touching it, biting it and notice split ends on it when i pluck some out, which i probably shouldn't do. But no matter what though, when i let it grow, it gets pretty long but usually ends up curling into my mouth where yours seems to go out and over. Literally my hugs my lip and goes into my mouth. Is that simply a sign that it's not as thick as it looks? I feel when i look at it, it's more empty then people think or it looks. Just curious. Also, did you have that problem of always touching it and stuff?

Ever since growing mine out, I really don't like to go out to eat with my girlfriend. It's just a mess trying to eat a burrito, burger, nachos, etc.... Even with the balm, and wax, it still gets in my way, or in my actual mouth, and I constantly feel like I have to wipe my face clean after every single bite. It's annoying, and I'm debating on taking it down in size.

Great advice Baron. First time growing one and it's pretty hard, but it's getting better and better. There is coverage where there was none, specifically close to the nostrils it's starting to get coverage. Will probably take a year total to get a mustache like yours, it's been 5 months now.

A lot of people can grow a decent beard within 1-2 months, but a decent mustache could take 6 to 12 months. So even though progress is of course individual and varies with each person, mustaches really does appear to grow much slower on average than beards.

Damn. I trimmed it back when whiskers got to the bottom of my upper lip. Shit. I lost my wallet and have gotten by for the last two weeks without my license because I want that stache on the picture. Ha. I've never purposely had a beard or stache. This is first time I'm trying. I think it's close. I went and bought beard butter today because a video told me to but get home to see a different video telling me to use oils or something first and only wax once I'm ready to showcase that stache for the first time. Could you possibly enlighten me?
