Living in Mexico, we had no idea this yummy squash existed, the only and most commonly sold summer squash is 'la calabacita verde' which looks like a tender zucchini, so we bought a couple of butternut squash and the way we prepared them was making them into a veggie cream soup, SO GOOD, usually we toast the seeds and eat them BUT not this time saved the seeds for planting this year's season, hoping they do well here, the summer season is the rainy season, from mid-May to September, had no idea how to care for them, but thanks to you dear lady, I now know a bit of how to grow and care for them. Greetings from Mexico to your family and you! :)

I peel and cut it into cubes, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle generously with a mixture of equal parts cumin, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika and chipotle chili powder. Roast until tender then serve on chopped, massaged kale with goat cheese, toasted pepita's and an apricot vinaigrette. So yummy. My first butternut plant is still tiny with no female flowers yet. We've been fighting the dreaded vine borer. 😤 Got 2 months until first frost, so fingers crossed!

My favourite recipe is half a butternut squash, diced, a large tin of kidney beans, small tin of sweetcorn, a cup or so of water and _a couple of squares of dark chocolate._ Bring to the boil and then simmer for about 20 minutes, delicious. I believe it's based on an old Aztec recipe. Great in winter.

Last year I roasted my first butternut and a sweet caramel like substance oozed out from it during the roasting process, this, combined with it's deep dark orange and luscious flesh, made me decide to save the seeds and grow my own, which is why I am watching this vid, for tips on growing! I love my sugar pumpkins and pumpkins in general but the butternut is next level in the food realm. I currently have two on the vine.

I prefer mine fairly thin/ runny rather than thick but it's personal preference. Easier to add more stock to thin it at liguidise stage than to thicken it up. When cooking I normally find add stock until squash just covered is normally enough. Hope this helps. Play about with it to suit your taste. 👍

To get the most fruit out of butternut squash, it’s best to grow them on the ground, and let each leaf node touch the soil so they can send down roots at every leaf node, this allows the plant to secure itself against wind and storms, as well as bring in more nutrients and water.
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559
I agree, but while growing these, I didn't have land to grow them in. I was very restricted in the apartment that we rented, and so I had to grow them in a pot. It is a good alternative for people who have to grow vertically 😏.

I made it out of materials from the Japanese dollar store. If I had an option out here though, I would have made it out of cattle panels. This video was from last year and the trellis couldn't hold up to one of the stronger typhoons that we had towards the end of the season.

Question: I removed about 75 percent of my leaves because powdery mildew was severe. But the fruit is still looking great. Nice and tan and stems starting to turn. @asliceofheavenhomestead3559
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 3 года назад
For bugs with an outer shell, you can sprinkle some diatomaceous earth on the leaves. From the sound of it, you may have some powdery mildew forming on the leaves. I have a video about controlling powdery mildew with baking soda and /or peroxide. You can also spray your leaves with neem oil. That is a fungicide, but it also might help control those bugs.

Great question! If the flower didn't get pollinated then the tiny fruit won't grow, but will feel squishy and eventually start to rot.

@@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 that is so interesting thank you. Mine are flowering now but its been raining on and off for a few days so Im not too sure any bees are visiting. I might need to pull your paintbrush trick.... If I can find some dry pollen.

Just know that if you pollinate a flower and then it fills up with water, the pollination won't hold. If it is particularly rainy, I pollinate the flowers when I can and then immediately fold the petals closed as best I can to try and keep out the rain. Good luck 😁

What fertilizer do you give the butternut squash? Thank you
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 3 года назад
I usually just give them a balanced 10-10-10. Something with equal parts of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphate. Miracle grow works just fine 😉.

Looks Wonderful 💕💕But What’s the Best. Month to START growing them ???
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 3 года назад
It depends on where you live. Just plant them after the last frost day for your area in the spring. They should grow all through the summer until the fall frost. Harvest all of them before the Frost though😁.

How often do you water your squash? Mine have just sprouted and I'm watering them deeply once a week.
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 4 года назад
I watered them twice a day. Because mine were in grow pots, the soil dried out very fast. If they are planted in the ground then you won't need to water them as often as I did. I would put down mulch to trap the moisture in the soil. Good luck with your garden 😁!

By mistake we cut of few leaves that looked like they had white mildew like thing, is that ok?
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 3 года назад
That is perfectly fine. It will help to stop the spread of the powdery mildew and the plant will continue to grow new healthy leaves. As the season progresses, it gets harder to combat the diseases and pests, especially if you live in a humid area. Well done, and happy growing 😉!

A really great and detailed video! One of the most informative butter nut squash videos on youtube. Thank you! I do have a question. What size pot did you use?
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559
@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 4 года назад
I used two grow pots. They are 3-5 gallons. I honestly can't remember which one 😉. They are each a foot in diameter. Thank you for the encouragement 😁!
