"Terrestrially challenged flora" 🤣🤣 This is a really clever idea! For me, I've got to have lids-- evaporation and heat loss in the winter would be rough, plus I keep lots of fish that are said to jump. Fun and creative video! 🙂👍

Dear Gil: I do believe it’s about time I shared an update on my, largest tank: 120-gallons. It looks better than ever, now that the water has cleared; the backdrop and substrate are black; and, I’m having some success with aquatic plants, in there. Unfortunately, true Siamese algae-eaters (TSAE’s) uproot plants and stir up compost, beneath coal dust, so I don’t want them in this tank. The tank has loads of driftwood, so blackbeard algae is an issue. After shooting the video, I intend to work on that, again. I’ll probably move infected driftwood to the 75-gallon, so the TSAE’s can do their work on it. Although it would probably help me deal with my, algae infestations, I’m not keen to keep terrestrial plants, at the surface of the water of my aquaria. I do appreciate your expertise in making lids which hold plastic, mesh containers for plants. Thank you for sharing your process, creating terrific, do-it-yourself projects for your, amazing, aquarist hobby, on RU-vid. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

G'day E.J, Your tank sounds cool. The best thing about keeping your houseplants in your aquarium is that you don't have to remember to water them. I look forward to some updates on your tank soon mate.

I absolutely love the terrestrial plants growing out the top!! It really makes for an incredibly beautiful tank!! The first time I really looked or researched about plants I found Jack and Dan and Colin 🌿♥️ I love this video GV one of my favorite subjects for sure!! Absolutely fantastic ideas on creating a cover using the ribbed 🤣 polycarbonate 🤣 I've saved all my little planter baskets for just a project like this!! It's absolutely lovely to have a planted Aquarium and grow plants out of the top!! It's perfect! PLant Life Project is a fantastic channel that's helped me learn all the different plants that can be grown an this way👍🌿 This was a fantastic tutorial and you always make your videos so much fun to watch 😁 So far I've got pothos, wandering Jew, a peace lily and a bird's nest fern (that's what it said on the label) I can't wait to try more!! The benefits to us and our aquariums is amazing!! I can also use the mental health part 🤣 At least now we have a choice of whether we want to go topless or not 🤣🤣🌿👍 I hope you and your family have a fantastic day!! Thank you for sharing!!👍🌿🐟🌿🥰♥️ AWESOME GV!!!

I see you have the same dry humour that I have .. 👍 .. Loving the builds.. Wow... I thought parlour palms liked it pretty dry.. Oh and for me... Best that I have a top on 😂 as for my tanks, most I have tops on but 2 I currently don't as I am going for a certain look but that will probably change

Thanks Kerry. Chase up some hydroponics pots. They have a larger flange on the top therefore are more forgiving when you cut the holes in the lid. Have a quick look at my latest video and you can see how the plants look now.

Try some peace lilly plant the root system is massive.I don't use pots and just hang the plants in the tank with the roots dangling in the tank.I haven't done a water change in ages and the nitrates are sitting at 5ppm.I run topless.One of the reasons why I found that fish jump out I found was when the lights go out at night it was to much of a contrast and the fish can't adjust that quick so they freak out and jump out.
@Gilsfishroom
@Gilsfishroom Год назад
The two plants in the small tank are peace lily. The roots have already grown out through the holes in the pots and are spreading through the tank. The main reason that I don't go topless is for evaporation and heat retention. Thanks for the interesting comment mate.

@@Gilsfishroom I just don't like the fact that lids reduce the amount of light that get to your fish and plants.I run a float in the sump for a water top off system and a 20lttr drum with pH and kh buffer.My tank is over 600ltr and I only use about 10-15 liters of top up water a week
@Gilsfishroom
@Gilsfishroom Год назад
Yeah, they do cut the light a bit. It is pretty dry here and open tanks evaporate super fast.

How would you suggest preventing bowing for longer tanks? I'm thinking about my 20gal long.
@Gilsfishroom
@Gilsfishroom Год назад
The small tank in the video is 2ft long and I have no bowing. If you were concerned about it, perhaps you could glue 2 sheets together, or cut a 1 or 2 inch strip and glue it perpendicular along the underside. Just make sure that the ribs are running lengthways as that's where the strength is.

I haven't really, although it has become a little cloudy. You can seal the open ends with silicone.
