Wow, delighted to see your comment. For fast growing leafy vegetables I prefer to use liquid fertilizer for its quick effect. If you will harvest for a long period, dry organic fertilizer works too. I had them in a location with about 6 hours of sun. Kale can do well in anything between 4 to 8 hours of sun. The good thing about planters is that you can move them around so plants get the best sunlight. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

It depends if you have room to grow extra seedlings. I usually have enough seedlings and with my limited garden space, I just toss them in my salad or compost them. Kale is a cool crop and usually I don't have that much issue with pests like I do in summer time, but I have used neem oil and Spinosad mix few times. If you don't want to use any sprays, cover them with a garden netting. I hope this helps and thank you for your comment!

We have mild winters and usually grow cool weather crops such as kale in late fall thru early spring. Kale performs well in cold, but if it is too cold, germinate seeds in a controlled condition and you can transfer them outside. Happy growing and thank you for visiting!

I prefer to start my seeds in a controlled media with no nutrients or soil fungi. This is to make sure disease like "damping off" don't effect seeds/seedlings. I suggest to sow few extra seeds in different media so if some don't germinate ,you don't miss your growing season. But direct sowing is definetely doable too.
