How to Grow Lion's Mane Mushrooms (Recipe Included!)

The Lion's Mane mushroom, also known as Hericium erinaceus, is a DELICIOUS mushroom that's easy to grow at home. I got a kit from www.fungi.com and tested it out with my cousin...and it's now my favorite mushroom to grow (and eat) of all time. It tastes buttery, like a nice piece of lobster or crab.
Best of all, it only takes a couple of weeks to grow and you can get multiple harvests off of the same patch. Once the patch is finished, you can use the mycelium to inoculate wood logs in your yard so you can cultivate Lion's Mane year after year.

The mushroom substrate a.k.a the food is sterilized and is a blank slate for any fungus to get in… So at that stage, the lions mane is the primary fungus who has taken most all of the food, and therefore controls that general area… But it’s not impossible for a foreign spawn to make its way in an infiltrate if you are careful

Watched this video 2 months ago. After that ordered my own grow kit. It went great, first it was a bit slow but then I put it nearer to a lamp. harvested about 500 grams first flush and about 1kg second flush. Love the chewiness of Mushroom, it s much like squid.

voltaire balagtas no. It consumed a lot of the nutritious mix and I wanted to do the next step, clone the spores and create my own grow bags. But I got a bad stomach disease (unrelated to mushrooms) and could not care for the mushrooms, they dried out. Dumped the whole thing (without the plastic) in a nearby forest, maybe it will grow there. And I will re-start from scratch. Still looking for a better place to grow as well, since I did it in my tiny single room city apartment and read some stories that spores can be very unhealthy on the lungs.

You can take the bag after the first three or so flushes of mushrooms then move them to something like a monotub with more substrate, wait a little while to colonize then they will grow new mushrooms. Some mushrooms are many thousands of years old spaning many acres if you give them food and the right environment they will flourish

we got one of those last Spring. Got 2 flushes out of it. We used a little laundry basket to give form to the plastic tent. Worked well for keeping the plastic bag from touching the mushrooms. Thanks for spreading the news about mushroom cultivation. Especially the nod to Fungi Perfecti. Paul Stamets is/has done amazing work concerning saving ecosystems and ourselves w/fungi. I just began cultivating fungi this last summer and have a lion's mane 'block' almost ready to fruit now. I would encourage all viewers interested to look into the amazing benefits of mushrooms, for health, the ecosystem, food and fun! Also- I believe it's better NOT to 'stab' the mycelial mass when cutting holes for fruiting. Cheers to being beshroomed!

To remove Chorine from city water, simply let sit exposed to air overnight. Pour water into a bowl and leave it on the counter for 12 or more hours. Chorine naturally evaporates away. Also, there is a small error in temperature to dry out mushrooms. Turn pan on lowest heat setting. Alternatively, you can slice as recommended and place it in an oven at its lowest setting. Great job on describing taste and texture and showing the value of drying out before cooking.

I double process (look up the research to see that neurogenesis is from aqua-extract) with water, then alcohol. I use 80 proof, then mix it 1-1 with water for 40 proof. It has been shelf stable for me. A $30 grow kit and $20 in Vodka yielded me about 50 ounces of extract...if you buy Lion's Mane extract retail it is $20/ounce. This is one of those items you should definitely try yourself. You will think sharper, colors are more vivid and your thought process more fluid. Good luck!

@@jeffroach6402 yes and no. Yes it helps to have very sterile and clean environment when fruiting as it i improves the quality all around. I agree with taking the most precautions as possible. No it's not 100% necessary as the mycelium has colonized the substrate enough that mold and bacteria in the air is too small to do anything. I have good luck and 3-4 flushes at a time before it loses it's health. I never use gloves (in fruit stage) or supper sterile practices when in fruiting have had a few contain, but everyone does. That was in the beginning now i got it down and have a heppa filer in the room along with a labcoat /mask/footie. That seemed to do the trick as long is you keep it clean it not a big deal just use common sense.

Looks more like a Poodle's fur -Lions Mane- to me. 🐩 Can I grow it from some pills ? I don't have these specimens in my country available. Thanks for the video.

Just wondering: Those tiny pieces that separated when cutting, can those be tossed into the bag and start a new mushroom?
@thegamewasdone
@thegamewasdone 6 лет назад
Love it man. I'm actually growing my own also and attempting to keep it growing. Have you tried other substrates to let the mycelia colonize and produce more? I'm going to experiment with the mycelia from the top and different substrates to see what happens so it doesn't waste and maximize my production. I would love your feedback, and will share with you what happens in my endeavors!

I have yet to experiment with different types of substrates, but these turned out so well I'll be doing more mushroom videos as a result - definitely keep me posted!

I have had great success with matching the substrate to natural growing conditions, so hardwood sawdust for Lion's Mane. I bought a kit for Lion's Mane recently that is myceliated brown rice....by mistake. I'll update as to the yield difference vs. sawdust.

I’ve learned that with mushrooms it’s all about combining the right ones and the right ratios. Evolution apothecary has it down. I’ve been trying to grow and extract my own for years but have yet to find it comparable

just bringing water to a boil doesn't get rid of chloramine, unless you boil for like 2 hours(given the approximate volume he had in that pan) kudos for your efforts

@机Olga Chloramine kills fish and frogs in these concentrations, thus it has sufficient biologic impact to be concerned about it's impact on your myceleum.

@@MarcyStuart I would use reverse osmosis filtered water myself, from Whole Foods in store machine. BYO bottle, $.49 per gallon. Mushrooms concentrate environmental toxins.

If your local water is treated with chlorine... 24 hours in an open topped container, such as a bucket, at room temperature and the chlorine will evaporate to the point that you can use it for your fish or amphibians... This should suffice for growing fungi, assuming your local water is free of contaminants.

I wish this had been about growing mushrooms or at the most the intro to growing mushrooms. What species of trees can be innoculated? What are the conditions? What problems might one encounter? Does one have to sterilize or do anything special to prep the tree trunk for innoculation? Any temperatures or humidities or lighting conditions we need to know about??

Only use hardwood. It's best to get a log that's less than one month old, else too great a risk of competition from other fungi. Always a good idea to disinfect your drill bit. Definitely needs to be in the shade. Plan on two years to harvest.
