My first time with lisianthus. I live in a hot and humid place so I decided to starting it in September. I set up a mini green house using cupcake trays outside and it worked!! They are so tiny but I’m super happy to see them 😊

Im here in Dallas, can I start with my seed on September? When you transplant outside?
@shesamadgardener

I typically transplant at the beginning of October. If I were you, I would start the seeds in December and plant them out next spring … towards the end of March.

I cover them if my temps get below about 28 degrees.

Hi Amanda! Thanks for a fabulous video. I am also in Texas, but in Houston Zone 9b. I keep my house at 74F during the day and 72F overnight. Currently trying to identify the coolest area of my home to germinate my lisianthus in. Do you think that will work to germinate and then subsequently grow them indoors for ~12 weeks? If not, I can drop my AC further but these hot summers are a huge energy bill suck! Thank you for your thoughts.
@shesamadgardener
@shesamadgardener Месяц назад
How about starting a few of your seeds to see if they will germinate under those conditions? And if they do, then you can start the rest. If they don’t, then you can drop your AC for the rest of them.

Bootstrap farmer trays will last forever. Very strong. I use generic 6 or 4 pack cells, off Amazon, quite cheap but last 4 or 5 seasons. It's the 10/20 flat that needs to be the best quality. No problem carrying them around one handed. Hex trays IMHO are trash.

Yes they contacted me about showing their product. I don’t do sponsorships like that, but I wouldn’t mind buying some myself to try if you think it’s worth it!

Great video. I attempted one tray; it was too hot, and none germinated. I am in the Phoenix area, and this gives me hope. I followed your directions and was able to get about 90% germination. Now I want more. Do you look for any other signs other than a 3-4 month period to transplant them? Do you think they will survive if I plant them in December (plugs I have already ordered)? I was having difficulty figuring out which group to order, but it sounds that they will grow regardless of the group in the hot climate.
@shesamadgardener
@shesamadgardener 2 месяца назад
If you aren’t getting to crazy low temps, they should be fine to transplant in December … just be sure to cover them if it gets below freezing!

Hi Amanda, I noticed last year you started your lizzie's in August - or at least that was the date of the video. i'm curious, why'd you start earlier? i'm zone 9 a; reached out to John's Plant Adventures in phoenix; and he stafts early August; wondering the best time for my environment West TX! Thanks 😊

I want them to be larger before planting them out … last year I lost about 30% when I moved them outside, so I’m hoping for bigger more robust root systems by starting earlier.

I found this video to be very informative and helpful! Thank you! I have tried growing lisianthus from seed for the past two years now. The first year was a bust, the second year much better but I still have lots to learn. Question: I've heard that in the seedling stage, lisianthus can't handle temps above 80° F or they will start to rosette. At what point are they able to handle heat 80 or above? I start the seed in my house under grow lights, but after they are up and growing I would love to move them to my small backyard greenhouse. Will they get too warm in there??
@shesamadgardener
@shesamadgardener 2 месяца назад
I don’t stress about the rosette because I am not looking for bloom right away and instead will have blooms in a year. However, I don’t typically plant mine out until the end of September and while the temps will still be high, they will cool off each evening.

Thanks for this very informative video 👍this is my first year at seed sowing and like you I just love to arrange the flowers and give to friends and family. You have given me the confidence to give these difficult seeds a try. Just ordered the pellets on line. Not sure how your method will work in N W England but I’m going to give it a try. Looking forward to your update videos 😍. As this has been my first year at seed sowing I must agree that some of the seed sowing sets are very flimsy and split apart when you come to get the seedlings out🙁 I will make sure that my future purchases are more robust 🌺🌸

I’m growing in the UK and manage to get germination but they grow so slow. They were sown 6 months ago and still too small to plant out. Are they suitable for overwintering in a heated greenhouse ? Great video
@shesamadgardener
@shesamadgardener Месяц назад
Hi there! Are you fertilizing them? Do they get at least 14 hours under grow lights each day? Mine overwinter outside in freezing temps, but I do cover them when it gets anywhere close to 25 degrees. I would think a greenhouse would be fine unless your temps get super cold.
@glendahill8806
@glendahill8806 3 месяца назад
Thank you, I was thinking I could plant in late summer then overwinter, I’m in a hot climate as you are. I have the winter seeding on heat mats going on at the moment, here in Australia, but next year I’ll try your plan.

Good morning. I have seen garden answer use these types of starters multiple times. She seems to be able to up seed her plants and then reuse the starters again. So I think you will be able to use it lots of times. If I had the space I would do the lisianthus for growing. Enjoy your time in Alaska.

First I have to say I love your shirt!! I am so happy for this video. Great details in your instructions. I have my seeds but don’t think they are pelleted so I’m hoping there isn’t a special way they need to touch the soil. I will be starting mine this weekend waiting for a plant stand to arrive that I ordered just for them. 👏👏I’m so excited to be growing with you. ❤

❤ another great information video. Thank you!!! I can’t wait to try your method of growing Lisianthus. I grew mine (first time ever growing Lisianthus from seed) in soil blocks this past year and although I had fantastic results…the soil blocks were yucky from algae by the time they were ready to pot up. I didn’t want to touch them & I’m a gardener who loves having their hands in dirt. lol
