I have swiss cheese monstera, a dwarf version. They're growing pretty well. My tank just cycled and im dosing 4ppm of ammonia everyday and the monstera, even at it's infant state can absorb 4ppms of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.

I had one in a pot but it grew a long strange root above the soil. Its well over a foot. It grows into the auuarium now and the pot with soil sits on top.

I've got a cutting of monstera adansonii in one of my tanks for over a year now, but for some reason it fails to keep more than 2 leaves at a time - as soon as the new one emerges, one of the old ones turns yellow and wilts away. Any advices on what could be the reason and how to fix that? The tank is ≈4 gallon; populated with a dosen of guppies and lots of snails. Interestingly, aquatic plants seem to thrive in it

I had a similar experience with adansonii in a nano tank. It never did very well. It was getting plenty of light but it was likely not getting enough nutrients. There were too many other plants in the setup that it could not compete with. It is doing very well for me in a larger tank with more fish even though there are many other plants both aquatic and riparian also.

Can you cut monstera roots. I know you said it will grow slower. But if my tank is getting over run by pothos and monstera roots will the plants die if I cut off 2/3 of roots?

I would be sure to grow them in a large enough tank if you’re worried about the roots crowding. But you can trim the roots to an extent. I would say about 1/3 of the roots could be trimmed but leave some that are growing down into the substrate. Personally, I’ve had problems with plants when I trimmed all of them multiple times.

How do you stop the roots from root rot? Roots go black and they start to smell after a while. Can you help?

I would cut back or pull off the mushy black roots, root rot tends to spread. It might take a week or two to start growing new white roots.

If it is new roots that are starting to rot it could be something missing in the water. I have soft well water and was having that trouble for a while until I upped the amount of gh booster I added to the water.

It’s not uncommon for the roots of new plants to die off and be replaced by new water adapted ones, but if the rot is spreading and affecting water quality then you may need to pull it out and try adapting it in a separate container (quarantine tank). Are you testing the water? The tank conditions may not be quite right (missing nutrients or minerals) you may try adding some epsom salts (magnesium, calcium) to the water. Sometimes it takes your own trial and error and multiple attempts to figure it out. It’s kind of like gardening In this way.

Two and a half months I had my cutting sitting a jar and nothing happened at all other than the root starting going mushy. I thought just for experiment I will put it in the aquarium and two days later fresh white roots have started sprouting. I think it may be saved :)
