That an overtraining. I thought for MMA I could be better than most by training twice as much as everyone else. It worked, but I definitely didn’t get twice the results, and was always sore. After 20 years I decided to follow Dr. Mikes plan for longevity and my health, and holy fuck does my body feel amazing. At 39 years old with a tough blue collar job, I feel better than I did as a teenager, and I’m still shocked tbh.

RP's advice on using higher reps and (usually) lighter weights has really saved my bacon. I lifted seriously for about 3 years back in my early 20s. Got into the mid 400s bench and mid 500s on DL and squat. Now I'm in my late 30s, haven't trained seriously in 10 years, and fat. Got back into it with a home gym but went too crazy too fast with "heavy" weight and caused some shoulder issues. As I've recovered, focusing on hypertrophy has been a big motivator. Thanks!!

I'm a super no gainer. I trained for years supervised by great trainers with proven records, world class nutritionists, and doctors to make sure everything was normal with me. Nothing worked long term. Everything works very short term 1-3 months. Then I plateau quickly, even if I mix things up or other methods or programs. Once I plateau I see no more progress. Even if I keep trying for over a year. I tried high set ranges (20-25) per muscle group per week. Same thing, I plateau quickly. I tried many other methods and programs and always got the same result. After many years I developed a method that seems to be overcoming the plateaus. I noticed that after I plateaud, I would not get sore anymore on the following days, no matter how much I pushed myself or added weights, sets or reps. This was a clue. The solution was to first do a regular two sets (8-12 reps), then the third set go until failure (say 8 reps) then multiply that number by 4 (so here it would be 32), and keep the set going until you hit that number; only taking a couple of seconds of rest when you can't push anymore. Never more than 5 seconds. Just keep going with the smallest breaks you can within this set until you hit that number. If it looks like I can't even get 1 with 5 second rest, then I lower the weight and keep going. If I get to the target number but I was still able to do 3-4 reps between the breaks, I keep going. I haven't seen this technique anywhere so maybe I invented it. I can get sore 100% of the time and I seem to keep gaining. I've been doing it for 6 months. It's the first time I've ever gained past 3 months.

A couple of years ago, I had really severe tennis elbow, that radiated up to my neck. Like any moron, I researched ‘how to fix tennis elbow’. Fuck, made it worse. Went to physio, that was useless altogether, for me at least. Finally went to the doctor, and she said ‘time heals all wounds’ in an anecdotal way. So I rested, then started hitting the gym. Started off on bench press….. nope. Went to a seated press and tried various angles. Mind blown. At a certain angle I could put on the weight, I was so excited. Went around the gym and tried other movement that didn’t hurt forearm or neck. So now, I can pull off anything in the gym. I started having left forearm pain on shoulder raises. Stop those, did other things that didn’t hurt, and now I’m back at front raises. There’s ’no pain no pain no pain’ rocky mentality when it comes to muscles, but joints are a different matter. It takes years to know what your body is saying, but have a listen.

I just started going to the gym a couple weeks ago & I think this is my fatigue issue. Half way through a session I get so exhausted I can barely grip the weight, even though every other muscle feels like it can keep going. I don't mean grip as I can't grip the weight, but it's around my wrist and forearm, the strength there totally drops & maybe that is because I am lifting way to heavy. It's most noticeable on pull day.

Would it be possible to put up small "popups" in the videos to explain some of the nomenclature you use, for us not as well versed in weight training, muscle names (and well, English). Like, when talking to delts and so on, have a small infographic showing what muscle that is? Another example from a previous video, where you mentioned about SubQ? Thanks for the videos, helps a lot as a beginner/intermediate.

Regarding getting a stretch in the target muscle during an exercise. What goes if you're flexible enough to reach the bottom of a machine, like the hack squat or chest press, which makes the weight rest on the machine. Should you still go as deep as you can, making the weight rest on the machine, or stop an inch earlier, so that the weight still rest on you?
