As Mike says I think rule 1 is be polite. Rule 2, see rule 1 :) Get on the dealers good side by giving the impression you're on the same side, he wants to sell you a car as much as you want to buy one. I recall many years ago going to a particular main dealer as I wanted to part ex my car for another of the same make. Myself and the dealer were equally frustrated by the fact that in the entire range only a £20,000 Cabriolet matched my requirements, and as that was way too expensive - the dealer knew that as well as me - I had to go elsewhere. Yes that was a /new/ car but the concept is the same.. you both want you to have a car from him/her.
You might say be polite and courteous. Dealers should learn that lesson too. I've walked into dealerships to spend a quite a lot of money, and have been studiously ignored by the people on the sales floor. I walk out at that point. If they can't be bothered, neither can I.
Is it being ignored or giving you the time and space to browse? I hate pushy sales people, who give you no time or space, so maybe these figured 'He knows where we are when he wants us'.
