Buying a used car needn’t be an unpleasant experience, but just like most things there’s the right way and the wrong way.
That’s why in this exclusive video we asked world-famous used car dealer and Mr Wheeler Dealer himself, Mike Brewer, the things you should not be doing or saying to a dealer when you’re buying.

@Chris P from the episodes I've seen, it goes like this: Seller asking for 12K, Mikes says "I'm afraid its going to have to be 8, and then repeats anything negative about the car that the seller said to him first (mirroring is what he calls this, see I've paid attention), then the seller comes back and says 9.5 is the lowest I could go, and then finally, Mike comes back with an offer of 9K, repeats the mirroring stuff, and mentions that he'll take if off the sellers hands right there. Deal Done.

I act like a Jew ( or Muslim if you prefer : different name same shit !) . I throw an offer which is usually 40% less than the MSRP( suggested retail price for not Yankees ) and I stand firmly to that . If the dealer doesn’t went to negotiate I simply stand up and walk out . There is not a single case of car salespeople that would leave a potential deal walking out , trust me ! Be ready to fight viciously and spend lots of time and energy . Not for the heart- fainted buyer ….But if you are up to this middle eastern- like “ modus operandi “ you can eventually get rewarded with a nice deal . I can understand peoples lack of trust in the motor trade. I have a dealership that my grandfather started in 1939. I am the third generation and the only reason we survive as a main dealer franchise is trust. Yes we have to make a profit just as all companies do but I pride myself on a family way of doing business. I don’t understand people who sell cars that aren’t quite right because the only way of surviving is repeat custom. If a car is not right for someone then we will say, even at the cost of a sale. It’s about a mutual respect and more than selling, it’s about passing on our years of experience to help guide people into making the right purchase. If that purchase is from me great...if not you’ll know I’ve tried my absolute best.

They will listen to you and nod their heads, but if you are not offering the same price as down the road's franchise with the same brand/s and with the same business plans and goals, then your franchise will fail. My experience of car dealers has not been good, trying to get the car you want at a sensible price is a nightmare. Even taking Mike's advice of doing your research first won't help is the dealer knows that the one you want is in high demand, and they always think that the sample they have is the best one you will find. My advice is always take a knowlegeable friend with you, they can guide you and hopefully stop you from making an expensive mistake. Use your instincts, if you don't like how the dealer is treating you, or the car is not as you expected, walk away. Sadly there are more bad car dealers than good ones, ask around before you go looking check out any reviews that you can find about the dealer. And lastly, always have an engineers report done or have the car checked by a mechanic that you trust, dealers will try to bodge a faulty car rather than fix it properly.

Car dealers are con men and women out to miss sell you things you don’t need which are not what they seem on the surface, ( Only for you to find out at a later date ) and are solely in business to rip you off and screw money out of you at all costs especially after the pandemic when they’ve all lost money. There’s a reason why online car buying sites like Car Wow and internet car leasing firms are popular. Car dealerships in person are con firms, always have been and always will be. Nothing pleasurable whatsoever going into them. And! their free coffee when it’s offered tastes crap. Main dealers are probably the worst out of the lot. Never take you car to them for a service because you very rarely FULLY get the service you pay for let alone expect them to do a basic thing like stamp the service book. Best thing to say to car dealers is to tell them where to go politely.

#1 Never buy new #2 Know exactly what type of car you want. #3 Research the typical price you should pay for that type of vehicle before you go to a car lot. #4 Get credit approval before going to car lot. #5 I never deal with a seller on there turf. Once I know that I want that car I go home and make contact with seller from the comfort of my own home on price and purchase of vehicle. #6 Once a price is agreed upon do not accept any upgrades or extended warranties. Tell them you will be in shortly with bank check and to have paperwork ready when you arrive. Last time i bought a car I spent less than 20 minutes in the dealership.

@@radharcanna Yes. Especially if it isn't a pre owned certified vehicle. Normally a certified vehicle will have a 12,000 full manufacturers warranty on it. I usually buy vehicles at the 3 year mark so they are certified. If you dont know much about cars it would be good to get an overall inspection and diagnostic check also. Most private shops will do it or free.

Not all dealers are trustworthy once they have sold you the car and got their commission, it’s on to the next customer and franchise dealers are the worst, when things go wrong they never ring you back always chasing them up, and you have to ring up the complaints department to get things done, they shoot there selves in the foot over small things, these are my experiences of franchise dealers always look over your car twice look down the sides ask questions history how many owners , I know dealers have to make a living but it’s you that is parting with the cash and you need the best deal possible deal.

Dealers wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so bloody hungry. They know it's more convenient for people to buy from them, but then they also pollute the marketplace by driving their salespeople to spamming the world and curbing garbage from home. Finding a real car for sale by a real person who simply wants a reasonable price is made impossible, not just by the dealer's pollution and extortion of their employees, but by dealers/flippers/curbers hitting refresh and snapping up every reasonable car they can find, even if it only makes them 100 bucks. There are just too many desperados, and all the reasonabe people get scared off and have now offloaded their car shopping to someone thick- skinned enough not to give a crap if they insult the seller. So your advice is never going to hit your target audience. This is all made worse by new cars being actively made into elaborate copyright protected proprietary rolling debt instruments that you swap like a cell phone contract or risk financial ruin if you hang on to them 1 minute past warranty. The waste should be criminalized. So all the "model research" in the world is not gonna do one bit of good when every possible car under 10 years old (in 2021) is one glitchy connector or black box module away from an expensive lesson about why repair shops are the only part of a dealership that is worse than the finance guy. Come on Mike. Your advice is sooo 1990-late. A headlight is 300 to 1000 now. And 25 year old 4runners are pushing 50k US! And first gen Mustangs are a better status symbol than a new car. Why? Because everything else is junk ("value engineered" to generate revenue for the manufacturer, or be tossed). Do you really think that people are going to just show up and be nice to a dealer when they are made even more desperate by all the eyeballs that are tracking every car and cutting margins to ziltch? It is a hopeless situation on both sides. Being a car salesperson is the fastest way to find job that will compromise one's ethics. But buying a car is a nightmare for working people that has zero upside. And you are asking them to soften their negotiations. Thanks for nothing. And thanks for going to bat the most abusive organization after the Catholic Church. Have you not seen the inside of a dealership in 40 years? What sort of person can possibly work in such a place, and still afford to have a conscience after a few months. Your sympathies are misguided, and seem quite self-serving.

They dont get away with it with me. Ive reported a few to the head office of whichever dealer it happened to be. The outcome was amusing. Staff being ordered to have further training etc. Went in one dealer, Toyota, a few years back. Arrogant salesman didnt listen to a word I said, tried to sell me a car I wasnt interested in then gave me the “go home with a brochure” line. I promptly left and went straight to VW and got a brand new Polo TDI. Wanker.

Also do know that if you trade a car in the dealer (most of the time ) at the end of the deal will have 0 in it. Therefore sell it your self and then you can negotiate much better with cash. And remember they have to do a living as well so they have to make something in order to sell you the car.

Mike how little you know about car clocking. It has never been easier to clock a car and with PCP deals with mileage being restricted car clocking has never been higher! Goes like this. You sell me a car and I'm restricted to 8k a year but I'm really doing 20 plus a year. All I do is before its service/MOT get my mate "Dave" to hook it's up to his laptop, clock the milomoter and ECU in a matter of seconds, take car to garage, have it serviced / MOTd and stamped. Repeat the process, before you know it a 20k car has a true mileage of 100k plus.. Easy peasy!! And you know it!

A loaf of bread isn't worth asking for a reduction on as it's 90p. Spending 20k+ on a car is ,and all dealers have 'wriggle room' and targeted prices for selling used, new or part ex , hence, why shouldn't a consumer ask for a reduction? The Internet has changed the process and landscape of buying/selling cars, used cars even more so, the days of claiming there is one for sale down the road for a cheaper price are gone, you can sit at home and search for the model, colour, mileage of the car you want,, its not a one way street, the dealers can do that too, to set a price. If you want to haggle thats fine, but arm yourself with the facts, research the car you want, plenty of sites will list the specific faults (all cars have faults and issues) factory recalls etc etc, then you can ask the dealer, has this car had its timing chain and guides done, has this red car got issues with the paint, has this car had the factory recall/fix for the electric handbrake,, then depending on the answer you can try and argue the price down,, well your asking XXXX its going to cost me X to have the timing chain done,,what about XXX ?

The trouble is so many dealers have the reputation of being horse traders and con men and renowned for ripping off women. I recently helped a lady friend buy a Ford Fiesta Eco Boost B+O Car from a main Ford dealer. It was advertised with full spec including spare wheel, 12000 miles and full service. I asked to see the spare wheel along with a few other questions. Well there was no spare wheel which I knew because this model has the music equipment taking up the spare wheel area. These dealers just write any old crap to sell them. She bought it and after 8 months with milage now 18,000 miles had to spend over £1000 because the cataletic converter warning light came on after just after it had its service. This was not a warranty item ~ even after 18k miles!!! Moral of the story is Ford Fiesta Eco Sports are a nightmare and expensive when they go wrong so avoid along with dealers. Buy privately and pay for an AA test to give a thorough inspection and save a fortune...

enjoy??? I didn't enjoy the dealer dropping the trade in price of my car by 3K lower than the price he offered when I entered the dealership.then tried to pressure me into a HP agreement at stupidly high interest rates complete with a £500 diamond brite paint treatment, and £300 car mats and then tried the cost of a warranty at £350 which was advertised as coming with the car already. Then to be told I was an idiot and stupid for not taking the deal. Even worse was the fact that I had not even gone t view that car in the first place, and had done a "Click and collect" on another car which Id rang to check was still there on the day of the appointment and told yes. To add insult to injury I'd done 109 miles to view that car only to be told after a 45 minute wait in the showroom that someone had actually put a deposit on said car days before. I was then shown an automatic I couldn't drive because Id never driven one, only t have the salesman say "Oh you'll get used to it on the way home-" a car which was five grand dearer than the car I had gone to see and then tried to get me to buy a six year old car that would have ended up costing me 11 grand with HP... and then had his "Manager" further try to strong arm me by sitting at the table and basically telling me "You ARE going to buy my car"....to which I replied no. Please give me the key back to my car I wish to leave. Totally unpleasant and pressurised experienced from a large dealer that made me never want to deal with any of their dealerships again.so much so I got home and gave them the mother of all bad reviews on Trustpilot. funny thing is, I went on a youtube page called "Yourautoadvcate" when they exposed the dodgy tactics of car dealers and their sales tactics which they use to drive deals via finance right down to the four box deal, the con of low trade in and adding of unnecessary extras and word for word and action for action, the dealer Id visited followed the same tactics. its almost like these people use the same "con the customer" script Adds a whole new meaning to Cavet Emptor

HI, Mike This is good advice thanks, It is not always easy to communicate though and any conversation can go bad very easily. I appreciate the entertainment value of all my experiences though as you said. There is also heat of the moment mistakes, this happens all the time like in the Wheeler Dealer, Season 17 episode 5 1985 Mercedes. In it, you tested the standing start performance of this car at the beginning. It was like 20 seconds 0-60 miles. Then when you retested it I think you should have mentioned the car had two people in it the second time around. It was also loaded up with all that extra weight too in the back and on the roof racks. On the racks would have created more aerodynamic drag too, with the plastic boats. This just meant it would have been an even better time than 17 seconds improvement. I accept things get forgotten in the heat of getting it filmed and accept that no one is perfect all the time. The show was very interesting though and I appreciated the effort and how the car was improved again from the ravages of time. I have had many similar experiences in my life with the benefit of hindsight I can see the many mistakes too. We all just try to learn from them and move on, or just accept that we will probably get things wrong again too soon. In other car repair shows, on RU-vid, there were issues left out too with other mechanics. This is why we have to develop our own mechanic knowledge and research and always research and to get to know the cars I worked on. This is like you said at the beginning. I also studied Mechanical Engineering and worked in many industries in my working life. On the topic of editing, I edited this comment twice and probably could still find other things not right with it afterward too. It turns into a horror show when mistakes get made that then cost lives. This is why scrutiny can be a good ally in getting a job done correctly. I have many repair stories of my own even before Wheeler Dealer got started. I have personally repaired many things on the many cars I have owned in my life over decades so far. I can relate to the many repairs shown on the shows. This is probably why I find them very interesting, I don't always agree with the level of detail shown but also accept it is a team effort and the results were very impressive. Great shows thanks still!

I get the impression that this video is all about not upsetting the dealer, well let me tell you,I've dealt with a few very offensive dealers in my time, who give the impression that the customer is an idiot, who has not done their homework. They have patronised, been downright rude and told bare-faced lies, which seems a very strange way of endearing themselves to customers, and I'm not talking about some grotty little garage,I've experienced this behaviour at main dealerships. As Australian Car expert John Cadogan says, whenever you walk into a dealership, the clocks on the wall only tell one time i.e. 'bulls**t o'clock' ! So be warned if in doubt walk away. I personally like to buy my cars from home, yes I will go to the dealership,to look over the car, and maybe take a test drive it, but I will not commit to anything in the showroom. I will negotiate from home i.e. on home turf. In this way,a prospective buyer cannot have pressure applied to them.they can say I'll think about it and if the dealer is serious they will call back. Keep the advantage on your side of the deal, and remember if you miss out on a car, there's always another one.
