How To Harley Davidson Voltage Regulator Diagnose And Replace. This will return your charging system to like new. This will work on many types of motorcycle. #Harleydavidsonfix
I’ve been watching your videos for the last 2 years fixing my 94 sportster 1200 as needed. Straight to the point and everything is well explained. Thank you for your help.
The voltage regulator is very common to fail...This is a cheap fix...and keep you from the dealer..For most riders. Thank you for watching. Ride Safe and have a great day.
I love your work, my dad is old school and ordered a genuine part from Harley for over $200 AUD. He got it delivered to his house since his mechanic is busy atm. He was telling me this on the phone that he had to wait 4 weeks, I am an Aircraft Engineer, so I was like surely this is a sinch! Your video was very informative and I will be using these steps in rectifying (pun intended) his problem. Cheers!
Recently bought a 2012 Seventy-two. The battery and check engine light was on, I fully charged the battery, replaced the rectifier, and it started right up, the battery light went off and the check engine light is now off. Thanks, Rocco! You're the man! Very helpful video!

@TwoWheelRocco just seeing this now. You're the man Rocco! I recently had to replace my derby cover due to a small leak. The gasket was a nightmare to replace, but I finally got it sorted out. Maybe you can show us the way you do it in a future video. Very helpful channel 👏🏻
@@user-nd5jv1gp9z if you are talking about the derby cover, I use a little grease and stick that O-ring gasket in place and then put it together. Sometimes it could be a real pain if you don't use the grease so you could place it right.
Try disconnect headlight and see if fuse blows...Then tall light...Just to make sure the bulbs are good are not the problem...let me know how this works out.
Thanks Rocco. U helped me decide to do my rocker box gaskets, and now with this. I would definitely do the same. Easiest, cheapest route and not complicate life by testing everything with prongs. 🤦🏼♂️ If not same result, then i know it's stator. 😅
Rocco thank you so much for these vids brother. You really are a great person for this and helping people work on their bikes. Really thankful for people like you sir
A tip I learned from my Dad for trimming zip ties: Use needle nose to twist it off. The ends turn out soft and don't cut. They also are recessed into the retention area of the zip tie. Cutting them leaves them long and sharp.
Hi Rocco, Another great video so helpful, you are the best .... I am going to do a voltage test tomorrow after fully charging my battery today at home. After watching your video I am convinced it will be the voltage regulator as it’s a new battery and it was flat after one ride out . I will let you know how it goes thanks
I appreciate your instructional videos. You give helpful info like the size of the sockets needed for the job and the level of difficulty of certain stages. Thanks!

My regulator is only puting out 12.3. I would think anything under 13 or so os probably not enough. Thanks for the video! Straight and to the point. No bullshit. I like it!

Hey Rocco, I just watched your video thanks. I just was wondering was that at idle when the volt meter went up to 14.plus or rev'd up? At idle on my softail it just goes down slowly.
That was at about 2500 RPMs. At idle was 12.9. What was your at idle? Any questions just ask. Thank you for your Sub Dan. Let us know how this works out. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Just replaced the battery and at idle it was a 12.3 but at about 2500 rpm's it shot up to 16-1700 volts so I turned it off right away. And the stator has a lot of ohms going through it too.
thanks for simple video...testing battery not running and running numbers can tell you alot...if bike starts you are away to the races re rectifier/voltage regulator or stator/rotor..if bike doesn`t start then you`re looking at a much bigger problem...starter and just alot more testing and digging....on your knees with a good strong light...thanks again....turn up the volume re the video production or talk louder.....canada
The hard one turned out tougher to get off than you made it look. The sucker seems fused on there. Pushed clip in. Pulled. Broken plastic pieces. Fun stuff
Very rewarding when you do fix your motorcycle. Sometimes these pieces get fused on. The plastic get old and they do break. Tape it up put it together and you're good to go. Thank you for watching and your support Monkey boys, Ride safe and have a great day.
Does the battery need to be charged before you install a new regulator or will the new one charge it right back up if the battery was dead due to the regulator?
Mr. Rocco ! How are you, Sir? I've been experiencing intermittent high idle on my 2012 Sportster Custom. I replaced the IAC but still have the same issue. I had damaged the the Power Commander V ground cable when the bike wasn't turning over. Replaced the terminal lug as well. I'm wondering if my Regulator is acting up. I haven't checked the battery under load, Autozone tested it and called it good. I had my derby cover open last week to adjust the clutch and I didn't smell anything funky so I'm assuming my stator is good. My bike has been running rich, poor gas mileage (about 25mph from 30ish). I haven't disconnected the Power Commander V and run it stock, but hoping to do it this weekend. As always, I appreciate your teaching. Stay awesome !
Two Wheel Rocco I was running with a Harley air filter but currently have a K&N filter and Python Throwbacks. I will have to trace the wires to unplug PCV and run it stock (perhaps will experience some decel pop). I probably want to test the battery cables and the connectors incase something was vibrating out of place causing intermittent idle. Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you.
You got it...recheck and remap...And check codes....Let me know how this works out. Sounds like bad map... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RpHzudF9zwY.html
So I completely removed the PCV set up (removed battery ofcourse). I connected all stock connectors and cranked the bike..struggled a few seconds but came back on. The following errors popped - P0113, P0118, P0123. The bike seemed to sound like it was bogged down with white smoke. I didn't want to run it longer than a minute. Please let me know where to go from here. Thank you, Sir.
Also, since I've been experiencing the high idle issue since I chewed up the battery's negative terminal and PCV negative terminal, I think I want to replace the battery. I replaced the PCV ground terminal and I think the battery may help with all other problems. Just a thought.
Happy to help. Now that's not a popular problem. Thank you for watching. Happy to help. Thank you for watching and your support Ken. What is your bike doing? Ride safe and have a great day.
Rocco my battery is 12.8 when off and 13.5 with bike on at 2000-2500 rpm with lights on and without lights reaches 14v is my bike good? 13.5 sounds a little low for charging with lights on and acceleration. Also how did you know the regulator was bad and not the rotor or stator?
Rocco, have a 2007 HDSPORTSTER 1200 custom battery is at12.8 volts, replace starter relay, clean check fuses and bike just click click click? Even had bike on battery tender and would start but after awhile it will click? Sometimes it will start. Tried to use a portable charger to start saw smoke on wires so I stopped. After replacing relay, don't want to be spending money and guessing but I can use some advice, thanks 👍🏼👍🏼

Hello Rocco! I have a question, is it normal for the battery to stand at 14.86 at idle, normally 12.7 off, then starts charging up to 14,86 then when reving it would stay at the same, what could this be? Thanks!
That is on the high side. I would be concerned for over charging at 14.8 Your battery life will be shortened. I would recheck and replace if it still reads that high. Hope this helped. Let us know how this works out. Thank you for your Sub. Ride Safe and have a great day.
I bought a new regulator and put it on my 2005 1200 sportster, it still isnt staying charged. I had to crimp the wires together since it was factory anymore. The battery is only 3 months old. The only thing i can think of is changing the stator. Any advise would be very helpful.
hey Rocco ....what year was the bike you were working on...easy rectifier fix....i have an `89 evo ultra classic...the rectifier comes with a long wire attachment also which you have to fish it thru the bike and attach either in the battery square area or it`s attached to the inside rear fender...not as easy as your bike....i hope it was a twin cam...1999-2006...anyways thanks....if someone has a stator problem then you will know it..burning smell and other real good signs....no mistaking....the quiet villain is the rectifier/voltage regulator and/or battery....thanks again.....canada
I wish I watched this video before making the appointment at Harley. Went in for inspection today they looked at the issue I was having with my odometer light it was the regulator, bringing it back Friday to have them do it I'm looking at parts and labor 277.00
my issue was the headlight and passing lamp would get bright and go dim and my light for the odometer would go out then come back on this happened 5 times Of course I only noticed it at night.
I just had my regulator changed today, on my 2015 48. Only because I'm useless with electrics. 😁 HD in London England were gonna charge me £410. I thought that was a lot and I couldn't afford it anyway, so they knocked it down to £240. Good lads. 😁

Sir, I have a question. I have a 2002 Sportster 1200 Custom. It starts fine and goes through the warm up process fine. I close the choke and I am able to ride. After riding for a short period of time, I experience some slight hesitation with the bike, sometimes it'll backfire, and then if I come to a stop, it usually dies. After it dies, my electric start wont work for some time, which feels like it wont work until something cools down. I had it looked at and the gentleman said I had a bad vacuum hose above the carburetor and he changed it out. This is still continuing to happen so I pulled the coil pack and went down to the Harley dealership and they told me it was probably the starter relay. I purchased one and changed that. Still having the same issues. Any thoughts or advice you could share is much appreciated. Shawn
Happy to help, You have two things going on. I would check the starter cables. Sometimes they fail right at the link that connects to your starter. Check the ends one you can visually look at it, but it's under the connection. You might see a little brown the wire underneath it is failing, check the connecting cables to your starter. I had to replace mine. As for the motor getting funny after it warms up that is a vacuum leak. I would check my intake manifold for a leak. Try spraying a little starter fluid and see if the Idle raises that's where your leak is as the bike gets hot. The leak gets worse and there's your backfiring and your poor Running. Let us know how it works out, but as for your starters, bad cable. I purchased a new one on eBay relatively cheap but this is a couple years back. Let us know how it works out. Hey Rocco! I have a 01 Dyna Tsport, the check engine light will come on at random and along with the engine light the speedometer starts to flicker and then dies out, will come back on at random and then the engine light will disappear and it will operate without issue. Could this be caused by a bad regulator?
My bike does the same but the code just states there is more then 16v and for more then 5 seconds. It climbs from 14.2v to 16.2-16.9.. then back down to 14.2. It’s never at 12. Maybe when turned off. Possibly the Regulator?
hey man hopefully you still run this channel and are able to help me out i keep getting the P0562 code with the check engine/battery lights i ran the test just like you did in the video and it all seems okay until i do it with the bike running with the high beams. voltage goes up to just about 13.80-13.90 but doesn’t go past 14 do you think it’s the regulator or could it just be a bad connection? if anyone could help i would greatly appreciate it!

@@TwoWheelRocco thanks for the quick response! it’s fairly new, maybe from like April 2021. voltage doesn’t go under 12.30 even when turned off. when i google the code it says it’s probably a bad connection, bad battery or bad regulator. i assume it’s the regulator cause everything else seems fine, i just want to see if theres a way to be sure before i spend the money on the regulator

I have an 87 softail with an EVO motor. I recently had the rotor and stator replaced when I had a new belt put on. The other day I was riding and it started choking out, backfiring, and the lights were flickering. I assumed it was carb issues so I took it apart and cleaned the hell out of it. Took it for another ride and the same issues, choking out, backfiring and flickering lights. Got back home and shut it off. Came back to it later and absolutely zero power to the dash ignition switch when switched to ignition, faint power when in accessories mode. Would a faulty regulator/rectifier be the culprit?
I would go with the Key ignition, take it apart and see if you can test those wires. See if you get your dash lights and everything working. Let us know how it works out. Thank you for watching and all your support. Drive safe and have a great day. Take a look at your relays, these wires they vibrate they get loose and it becomes a problem. @TwoWheelRocco Thank you for the quick reply I've switched switches twice, used switches not new. Same outcome. I took the rectifier from the stator plug and the connectors look fried.
The only thing I could recommend is to buy a new rectifier that cheap enough, if that's your problem. Otherwise you're replacing the stater and the rectifier again. Always the culprit China, thank you for the update. Let us know how it works out.
@TwoWheelRocco I tested all my circuit breakers and relays, and they passed on the multimeter. So it looks like I will be purchasing a new rectifier. I will keep you posted. Thank you again for the quick replies!!!!
This weekend my 94 evo quit running while I was riding, would not try to turn over and blew out my headlight but the battery was charged at 13v do you know what would cause this?
I have a 1995 sportster 1200 and the battery reads 12.19 when off and 11.9ish when i turn the key on. When i start it, it will go up to 12.4ish and it doesn't show it move up to 14ish like yours does with the new regulator installed however when i rev up to 2k rpm it will go up to 13.8. when i crank it over it does drop down to 8.1ish. I'm trying to figure out if the regulator/stator is killing the battery or is it just a bad battery. When first start it up it will run for about 5 mins and then stop, the lights are still on. I'll try and start it back up and it turns over but doesn't run. I hook a battery charger up to it and crank it up and it will start and run. When i drive it down the road about 1/4 mile it stops working and It' wont start again unless i put a battery charger on it. Any thoughts on what could be the problem?

Regulator is a relatively inexpensive part on Ebay. You have no other choice. It regulates your bikes power, lights, ignition and charging. Hope this helps. I have replaced many. Check with volt meter as in the video. @@lovetohunt3613
Happy to help. How old is your battery? Test it and make sure all the leads are clean and tight. Thank you for watching and your support. Let us know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day.
Over the years I have noticed that I only replaced one stater it seems that it's always the cheap regulators, With that I hope that helped, tested swap it out and you're done with it any questions just as, Thank you for your support, Ride Safe and have a great day.
I read further and seem that in your comments, I’m fairly sure my stator is shot, from what I understand I shouldn’t see any continuity from stator plug while grounded?
Two Wheel Rocco also just to put this out there, seems as tho Harley had some issues with the 2019 batch having stators go bad my first thought was same as yours I only have 11k on bike a year old stator shouldn’t be dead yet but it’s looking that way wish it would be as simple as the rectifier
Damn dude! At 6:41 during starting your battery dropped to 8.73!! Anything...ANYTHING...below 9.6 is MANDATORY replacement NO MATTER ITS CHARGE RETENTION STATUS. Often a reg/rec problem will compromise the battery, which it looks like it has. EVEN IF THE BATTERY PASSES EVERY OTHER TEST, IT IS IN THE FIRST STAGE OF FAILING.
Happy to help. Any questions just ask but you are correct. It is easy. Replaced the regulator one in doubt. Thank you for watching all your support Surf Goat. Ride safe and have a great day.
