▬▬ learn knife making part 2 ▬▬▬▬
Learn how to heat treat damasteel, in a small home shop; using an evenheat kiln, knife quench plates, and a deep freeze using a ln2 dewar. After having surface ground down the damasteel blade, to the correct thickness for the backspacer. A carbide engraving end mill is used to write the American knife maker's name "Gillian" onto the blade. Christopher briefly describes the engraving end mill and how to use it. Gillian explains briefly that the Damasteel DS93X, is made up from RWL34 and PMC27, and describes how to decide which heat treat recipe will be used; from the five listed at the website. A high hardness recipe is to be used, to create a very durable stainless steel blade.
Next a small 309 foil pouch is created for the heat treatment at home, in order to create an inert atmosphere, this small foil pouch is filled with argon gas. These gasses will expand during the heat treatment process, pushing the sides of the tool wrap pouch away from the damasteel knife inside. After holding at a normalizing temperature to equalize the damasteel, the evenheat kiln ramps as fast as possible to Austenitizing temperature and holds it. The Damasteel blades are then quenching and tempering using a knife quench plates. About 2 minutes after the plate quench the tool-wrap pouch is cut away, (after blades reach room temperature) and the blades are put into a deep freeze, of -320F by using ln2 dewar, filled with liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen temperature is -320 Farenheit. This deep freeze completes the martensite transformation, and increases hardness. Following the cyro deep free of damasteel a two stage tempering cycle returns the toughness to the blade steel. The video ends with a hardness testing of the RHC scale, of the damasteel ht. Knife maker Gillian concludes the how to heat treat damasteel video after showing that his damasteel tanto reached +63 HRC.

Google sent me here in response to my "damasteel heat treat" inquiry, and I thank you for posting this. I've only worked with high carbon steels and damascus I've made, and damasteel makes my heat treat process look simple by comparison! This video has convinced me to stick with what I know for now, so thanks again for the information.

Loving these videos. You deserve more subscribers. Thanks for the time you put into these. Lots of makers seem to be secretive but you seem to want to teach others. I hope to see you at a convention someday, as a peer.

I appreciate the feedback Cole. Eventually, the time of the virus will pass, and the conventions will resume, and our paths will cross. Until then Stay Safe, and Stay Healthy.

I follow the recommendations from Damasteel. There are different types of Damasteel, and they all have different tempers. You can download their temp recommendations here. damasteel.se/download-pdf/
