When in doubt, throttle out. 🤣 I drive a 1.3 so yeah, not much torque in it. When starting from a really steep hill, I use the handbrake then rev it all the way to 3000rpm or higher before slowly letting off the clutch until it starts pulling itself up without rolling backwards. It's annoying 'cause it gets so loud, but it gets the job done. 😂

Paynos Keeping the heel of the floor is taught by every Indian instructor. The reason is Indian driving school cars mostly use cheap low power highly damaged cars. They are so difficult to drive that these Indian instructors know every little dirty trick. Powerful cars with good clutch have enough power to easily start rolling. If an average American driver is a sheriff, then an average Indian driver is a Vietnam guerilla soldier.

Once you get used you your clutch, unless you’re on an extremely steep hill it’s not necessary to use the handbrake. You can just go foot off the brake pedal to the accelerator and clutch out to the friction point at the same time, then apply appropriate accelerator and gradually release the clutch. It all happens very fast but you get used to it and then it’s just muscle memory. On very steep hills you might roll back slightly so if there’s someone stopped too close behind you the handbrake might be a safer option.

Bought my first manual yesterday. After an hour my friend felt fine I could drive on the roads. I accidentally turned into my city's downtown bar area on a Friday night. Uphill. I stalled immediately at a light and had cars backed up with everyone but the lady behind honking at me. I panicked, turned my hazards on and the e brake on. Immediately switched seats. That has to be the most embarrassing moment of my life. Made worse by me panicking. I have no idea what I'd have done if my friend wasn't there.

The way I do it is much easier.. Just put your foot on the normal brake, let go of the clutch untill you can feel the car wants to take off, and release the brake? Give it some more gas if you want to go faster but this is it honestly
@collinslfc
@collinslfc 5 лет назад
But then you're engaging the clutch with the brakes on the wheels, in other words you are trying to drive the drive wheels whilst, at the same time, clamping the drive wheels with a powerful brake. That is not going to do your car any good, plus it increases the chance of stalling.
@handlotion8244
@handlotion8244 5 лет назад
Collins LFC thats what u do with the handbrake too right
@collinslfc
@collinslfc 5 лет назад
@@handlotion8244 No because firstly, most cars are Front wheel drive. The handbrake only acts on the rear wheels. Secondly, the footbrake is a much more powerful brake than the handbrake is. If you engage the clutch to the biting point with your foot on the foot brake, at that initial point you are not giving the car any gas. The revs will start to drop from idle to below idle. Of course on modern cars, the ECU will try to put more fuel in attempt to prevent stalling and in diesel cars you can get away with it because diesels have higher torque at low revs, but on a 1.0L or a 1.2L petrol engine, which is what most new young drivers can only afford to buy, you will be making it very difficult to prevent a stall. Especially when trying to move off on a steep hill.
@handlotion8244
@handlotion8244 5 лет назад
Collins LFC for me its easier man.. idk. I drive RWD and the revs dont drop.. never came close to stalling while doing this, and im a shitty driver. I think it’s very interesting tho.
@collinslfc
@collinslfc 5 лет назад
@@handlotion8244 If it works for you and your car then that's cool, but it's not the ideal way of doing it. I don't know if you're based in the UK or not, but in the UK there is a book published by the DVA (the organisation that carries out driving tests) and they instruct you to move off by pressing the gas before lifting the clutch pedal up, and this is what driving examiners should go by. But often people don't use the gas in their driving instructors car which is often a diesel, which has higher torque than a petrol, then they buy a low powered petrol as their first car and stall it all the time and they can't figure out why. It's because they haven't been taught the official method of pressing the gas before engaging the clutch and in low powered petrol cars it's much easier to stall.

With time and practice you may become more confident in performing hill starts, or even driving up a hill in general. I'm still not a huge fan of doing it myself after over a year of solo driving in my own car, but every time I do just fine because of the experience - mostly from driving by myself, but it all started with my lessons with my instructor. You will find driving after you've passed your practical and theory is where you really learn to drive and, importantly, gain confidence and competence. All the best with it, my dude.

It happened to me yesterday, we were stopped for railway crossing and when it cleared, my car was not starting, I released the handbrake, one foot on brake other on the clutch, put it to 1st gear then slowly was releasing clutch, was not feeling the bite point as the car was stopping at that instance. Was panicking as there were many cars behind. There was an L sign in my car so few people came and told me to not panic and try again, few came to help by pushing the car (i know it is common in India). One lady behind my car approached and took control and drove it to safe and told me to calm down and understand the bite mark (sound and vibration) of my car. I don't understand, I am learning the car and it happened to me rarely. The starting point on the railway crossing was a little bit uphill. Was embarrassed a bit.

I'm not entirely sure if they're more lenient when the car stalls uphill, but if it stalls on a "normal" surface it's an instant fail. I know what I have to do, but I usually release the clutch too fast... my success rate of starting uphill is about 65% 😂

Owned a manual in Pittsburgh PA, US (famous for our hilly urban terrain) - haven't owned a manual in years... really miss the control. First *hours* I owned it, needed to drive through town and then make a two hour trip for Thanksgiving with my family. Stalled twice in town because a Penguins hockey game was letting out and I had no time to practice. Made it the rest of the drive with only one stall. But uphill starts on a 50-60° street and a car on your bumper can really make you nervous! I can attest to that!!! Started watching engineering videos about worm gears and ended up here. Great tutorial!
