Chord progressions offer the emotional scaffolding to our songs, so let's talk about them. More specifically, let's talk about hiding our chord progressions until the climax of our song, to maximise its impact!
We'll look at some examples, and also refresh some of our basic music theory fundamentals!

And techno producers at that
@urphakeandgey6308
@urphakeandgey6308 2 года назад
If techno producers learned music theory, they'd realise how utterly basic their compositions are. ROOT - ROOT - ROOT - ROOT I'm not trying to shit on techno. I just think it's comically pretentious of techno producers, of all people, to say stuff like "I don't need music theory" when they rarely even make music that gets off the root. You don't need music theory, but your compositions are brain-dead basic? Very pretentious. An arpeggiator isn't magic either. The amount of times I've seen people orgasm to an arpeggiator playing a basic major/minor triad is too damn high. Stop thinking that shit is Mozart. I understand the magic in techno is more in production and sound design, but listening to a bunch of 6+ minute tracks that *_literally stick to a SINGLE note/chord_* gets very boring very fast... And on top of that, I have to see a bunch of techno producers say bullshit like "lol I don't need music theory." If this is you, you're the laughing stock of musicians everywhere and you're the reason they don't take techno and _"EDM"_ seriously. Punk rock literally had more complex compositions. At least they changed chords and often had more than 1 progression. If you're not gonna learn it, at least don't be a dick about it, techno broducers. The pretentiousness is just mind boggling because of how utterly basic most of these people's compositions actually are. From a "trained" musician's perspective, you're basically playing one fucking note... For 6+ minutes straight. WOW.

Although I do not write particulary melodic stuff these days I know a couple tricks I think are worth sharing about chords, 'spreading' notes across the keyboard is a good way to make your synths sound wider, add variation to your chord progession, and emphasize tension in certain moments, all you have to do is transpose certain notes, take the root note one octave lower or move that fifth one octave higher, as long as you dont overlap with other instrument frequency youll be good! experiment and have fun with this technique, youll find some interesting results for sure.

You released this video at a good time for me. I'm new to making music and I keep feeling that what I make is so repetitive. The music I'm inspired by is also repetitive but somehow doesn't get boring. Even though I subtract and add elements, and make little changes on the fly, there's very little 'journey' to the song. This may be a major reason. Thanks.

Wow, i accidentially dropped into your clips while i was looking for Psytrance content, and absolutely didn't expect myself still being here days later. But you are so phenomenal in breaking down dry and boring music theory, short , crisp and interesting into just the basics. ... if my music teacher in school would have been this skilled, i wouldn't have needed 2-3 centuries to find my way back, ok it was just playing flute for 3 years as a kid, from listening to start making music in 2017, without any ambitious plans - not like so many people, just for myself, simply love doing it :)
