Sometimes I go through my orders at ulta and Sephora over the past few years. And I can identify which purchases were impulsive. I wish I could get all that money back. Some simple reminders like that really help me.

I’ve been doing this since the earlier days of the pandemic. I had to learn how to save my money, and when I go through the receipts I have an idea on what I have enough of and which items are worth splurging on.

I think the first week for me was the hardest. Especially since it’s my birthday month. All the targeted ads got to me, but each time I would add things to my cart and then look at my bank account and write down what I would be left with if I purchased what was in my cart. That helped me a lot. Also seeing my bank account with more money than I am used to seeing (not a lot but def not scrounging till next pay day) has helped me appreciate doing this. On the topic of habits, I’m still trying to change my shopping habits. Makeup is my biggest weakness, followed by things to make me “better” (new hair lotions and potions to give me beautiful hair, skin care that will make me look like the best me, gadgets for the house to make it more homey).

I totally agree with you on the bank account situation! I checked in with mine and got to transfer my first savings installment and it was so powerful!

Another way of making the habit of not shopping rewarding, is to jot down the sum of money you would have spent on the item that you are desiring, while also looking at regularly at the growing total in your bank account. You could even transfer that sum into a savings account and watch that accumulate. I find it very rewarding to tot up the totals of desired items I would have bought and then tell myself how much I am saving.

Day zeroing is so real! I remember when I was in my teens and was really diligent about journalling, I put up a goal to journal every day for a year. I got quite sick for 2-3 days and didn't journal cause I was literally puking all day long, and I felt like such a failure and that I didn't reach my goal (and day zeroed it and slipped up again, and then gave up completely 🙃) but GIRL, you could barely sit up! From now on I'm gonna tick the box that I managed to journal for a full year 😅🙌

Feel like the vid should’ve been completed by Shauna saying “And thank you for coming to my TED talk” 😂😂 The biggest thing I learned from you Shauna is how having clear rule help to form habits. It’s made sticking to my no buy easier. I’ve also started going through my receipts to budget.

I almost caved a couple times but I haven’t broken my makeup no buy. I was on the fence the whole time if I was also doing a clothes no buy (I bought leggings but they were technical a replacement purchase) . ❤

Such good insight, here! We don't usually think too hard about automatic habits...because by definition, they don't require thought or intention. This is why habits hold such power and are so difficult to change. Also, as you mention, the fact that new ways of coping and new habits need to be implemented in order to be successful. I love the reference to the "upward spiral"...I don't know why I've never heard anyone use that term before because it's great!

the first time I heard of the upward spiral I loved it too! People talk about 'downward' spirals all the time so I love the more positive contrast. The book is awesome too and talk about it all the time 😂

Love the "never miss twice" concept. Definitely going to be implementing that more as a regular reminder to myself! Some things I do to make bad habits harder: NEVER save my credit card info online/on my phone/in apps, I've also silenced push notifications from my Ulta/Sephora app, and unsubscribed from beauty emails. I've looked at my skincare and beauty categories and there's nothing I need in the near future - no excuse to "take advantage of any sales". Still have going strong in my no-buy of makeup, beauty, and candles. Didn't place any restrictions on clothes but I haven't bought any yet.

Doing no buy january, I don't think I could have made it through without using your no-buy bingo card idea! I slipped up once or twice, but overall, I'm actually really proud of how much I was able to save this month. I really want to be able to afford a down-payment on a house in a safe area and this month showed me that that goal is possible if I keep trying

I did not buy anything in January, I did it! Yea! I'm not doing a no buy for February but I definitely do not feel like I need to just go out and buy a lot of things.

I had an unhealthy Starbucks habit. I went away for vacation, and replaced it with a juice bar habit when I returned. It seems to have worked after about a month.

This is sooooo good and informative. I appreciate this a ton. I have a no buy this month for non essential items. I have colored in dates for when I did and didn't spend money that way. I didn't start over. I am going to see how i do and change some things for next month. 😊😎☀️
