How to increase RAM virtual memory in Windows 10 - 2024 Working Tutorial

If you need more RAM for your computer, you can first try to increase the virtual memory to see if this fixes your problems before you buy. In windows 10/8/7 there is a pagefile.sys file that works as your virtual ram memory. While not as fast as real random access memory, it does the job, and it's free!
Try to adjust virtual memory on Windows to optimize system performance using this tutorial, and see! :)
Note that if your drive is very slow this might not be the best idea. Also, virtual ram is never as good as real RAM, and to install that I got 2 very nice tutorials about that in the playlist!
Remember, one gig is 1024 ;)

One additional remark: It is good to defrag your hard drive before doing this. This makes sure that the free space on the drive is in one block, and the page file can be crated as one consecutive file, instead of multiple parts spread over the drive. This can reduce the access time to virtual memory because the head of the hdd doesn't have to move around as much.

@@giftig694 Yeah i didn't knew and i did it once or twice..but after when i find out ,never again.Luckily it doesn't have corruption only 1-2% bad sectors,but i think that is normal after 1,5 years about so all good so far and 4-5 times faster than hdds.I saw on the compuMarket here in Greece a price of 74euros *85$ 2Terras from Western Digital and is freaking affordable than before 1,5 year that I paid 110$ for 500gbs.What's the prices there in US?Greetings from Athens fellows !peace!

I sometimes have that problem whenever my phone is plugged in to USB. If you have any USB devices like a card reader, try unplugging them. that might be the issue

@@_Zaphyra_ well, if you explorer freezes, try unplugging devices then. Maybe it does nothing, but maybe it fixes the freeze. For me it is my phone when it is plugged in. Could be something completely diffrent, but it is worth a try.

Its how binary data is counted, same reason why hard drives and usb looks smaller than they should in Windows.

So I finally gave in and did this and so far in assassin's Creed Valhalla, I haven't crashed in 2 days PLUS I don't know if I'm just having some sort of placebo effect or something but it seems like my game is much smoother and my FPS is increased by 5 to 8 FPS easily... Anyone else confirm this and also why would that be? I'm on a 2 tb Samsung 970 Evo Pro Nvme and have 64gb of ram 3600

If you run too many applications that use all your ram + virtual memory it'll slow down your system or even freeze. Optimal value is 1.5-3x size of your ram. So the answer is no but actualy yes in some circumstances.

@@z63799 It's just optimal value that you can set. Of course more is better , so programs that need more ram don't crash. But if you don't have any problems with running these programs you can lower the value. Virtual ram uses your hard drive space as a source so more virtual ram you get the more space will be reserved. And remember it's always better to just buy more physical ram :).

Virtual Memory is like, say I have 4gb ram and it is facing a mirror. In the mirror you see your reflection. Virtual Memory exists but it doesn't at the same time. If you have a 100gb drive in your Virtual Memory and you want to make a new drive. You can exchange 10gb for a drive.

Yes, real RAM is much better ofcource, but you have to install actual hardware for that.

You need to Double the Actual RAM at 1024MB = 1 GB So 16GB of RAM is 32 * 1024 = 32,768 MB

Well, this is never replacement for real ram, it is only wise to do when you have a fast drive, otherwise it might not give you much benefit, not sure why he has those limitations, ask him but I'd follow my steps (if you got a fast drive)

He had 8GB physical ram and he wanted the virtual memory size to be double the actual RAM (so it's 16GB). So, he did 2 * 8GB = 16 GB. Here 1GB = 1024 MB. Because the windows asks your size in MB and not in GB, that's why we have to convert GB to MB. In your case, you have 16GB ram, if you want your Virtual memory to be double the size, it's 32 GB. So, to convert 32GB to MB, 32 * 1024 = 32768 (MB). This is what you have to set. But, I'm not sure if you really need that much Virtual memory because 16GB physical RAM is already looks like a good size. Please research a bit on it and set only if you need it.

It's 1024 x [memory you have] x 1.5 for minimal, and then 1024 x [memory you have] x 3 for maximal. So, in this example: 1024 x 8 = 8192 x 1.5 = 12288 and then 8192 x 3 = 24576 When you have 4Gb : 1024 x 4 = 4096 x 1.5 = 6144 and then 4096 x 3 = 12288 What you do in the video (just double the RAM) is overkill. Why do you think there is a min. and a max. anyway ? On top of this, if you don't have an SSD you can forget it; a SATA is simply not fast enough to transfer the "borrowed" memory from the swap file. Same as when you make your swap file too big. I hope this made sense without being too technical. Good luck everyone !
